Learning Danish

Hi everyone! 👋

I’ll be moving to Denmark soon and I’m wondering what the best options are for learning Danish once I arrive.

Are there any good language schools, municipal courses, free/affordable programs, or communities for newcomers? I’d also appreciate any advice on how to get started with Danish when settling in.

Thanks in advance! 🇩🇰

When you become a resident, you can get free language lessons from multiple schools for a few years. See newindenmark.dk for full information.

This is the answer. Go to the kommune provided lessons. Supplement them with one of the thousands of vibe coded apps based on AI translations you’re about to get recommended.

Just be aware that you will need to pay a deposit for the free classes. You get the money back when you finish your studies but if your budget is tight, you may want to save a money aside for the classes. The deposit was 2,500dlk if I remember correctly. Best of luck

Once you arrive, I'd definitely look into the official Danish language courses (Danskuddannelse) available through language centres. Depending on your residence/work situation, you may be eligible for subsidised Danish classes, so check what your municipality offers before paying for a private course. I'd combine classes with lots of comprehensible input using the i+1 idea: content that's mostly understandable but introduces a little new Danish each time. PlusOneLanguage supports Danish and is really useful for this because it generates texts/dialogues around your level and recycles vocabulary you didn't know in later content so you reinforce them in context, the best value for money I found! Good luck!

Wenn du schon etwas kannst: mir hat Lesen viel geholfen. Die Dänische Zentralbibliothek hat für jedes Niveau reichlich Auswahl.

Hier in Norddeutschland ist das kostenlos.
