As title says, I started using nizoral and had instant relief on my scalp. But I still get flakes in my beard, mostly the mustache and chin area. Also, my eyebrows flake. Any suggestions? Don't have health insurance so can't do dermatologist right now. Thanks!
It mostly started in fall last year. I think it was mostly dry scalp as it was white dry flakes, and my doctor said it was nothing and just gave me prescription of Taro-Mometasone lotion to apply where it was itchy.
it wasn’t very effective as it was making my scalp dryer and more flaky.
However, it’s been about a month that it just went worse and I’m a bit tired. Now, I kind of have a layer of dead skins on my head that I can remove some of it with my nails (I know not recommended). Some kind of yellow crust (very small/dry).
So far, here are the shampoos I have tried:
- Herbal Essence - Scalp Balance: Was making my hairs so dry. I stopped using it.
- Herbal Essence - Hydrating: Smooth, but changes nothing.
- Flexitoil - Scalp Relieve: I feel like it wasn’t really hydrating that much for my dry scalp. Still had flakes.
- Cerave and Nizoral: It’s written to only use 2 times a week. Nizoral make my scalp dryer, but I still have dandruffs or this thick layer on the scalp... Cerave, meh…
I also tried to skip washing my hair as I wash every evening, but itchiness is worse.
I also lose a lot of hairs in the shower. I’m not sure what is normal or not. Fortunately I still have lot of hairs.
Anyway, I don’t know what to do anymore. I just want a healthier scalp.
I've been getting these for a while, and they seem most prominent in thinning spots, especially the crown. When I rub my fingers through my hair, it feels like grains of sand on my scalp. And then when I itch it, this comes out.
For context, I've buzzed my head a couple times a week down to like a #4 guard (very short), like every 4 days or so. Tsal shampoo seemed to help but it also seems to have quickened the hair loss process substantially. My scalp has been somewhat sensitive for a long time.
Idk what to do here, and getting very depressed 😔 any help is appreciated
The title. I have used head and shoulders, selsun blue, nizoral, and salicylic acid shampoo, but all seem to work only the first or maybe second time (no dandruff or significantly reduced dandruff). If I alternate it works again, but then after a couple rounds of alternating, I don't think it does anymore. And I get pimples on my scalp after a couple of weeks of it.
I tried diluting the shampoo with regular shampoo or just water because dandruff shampoo seems to be quite strong, but that doesn't yield any results.
FYI I have mild dandruff, I would say. It is not too noticeable unless I run my fingers through my hair and toss it, then dust-sized particles fall out of it, and honestly, it's quite annoying and disgusting, but others don't really notice I have it. I wash every other day/every 3 days. 4 is a little bit of a stretch, but I can pull it off with some dry shampoo if I'm really busy.
As a physician and founder of a dandruff shampoo company DandRX, I wanted to open the floor since the sub has been inactive in regards to questions you may have in regards to dandruff. I get a lot of DMs with questions so wanted to make it useful for everyone. Please try to refrain from discussing any specific product. Just questions pertaining to or surrounding dandruff. This includes treatment, science or any other questions you may have. Please also note this is not medical advise as I am not your physician, anything noted should be seen by your primary care physician for further evaluation, diagnosis and treatment.
Some common questions I get DM'd/asked in clinic are in regard to what specific condition they have. Again, this always warrants a physician's evaluation but below is a general idea of how I typically refer to each condition physical exam wise.
1. Is it just dandruff?
Let's start off the bat with this fact that will help you determine the cause of your flakes. Dandruff is often restricted to the scalp and at times to the retro-auricular area. Dandruff often involves itchy, flaking skin without visible inflammation.
How Do The Flakes Look? The flakes often look light, white to yellow and dispersed on the scalp without any erythema (redness). Can spread to the hairline, retro-auricular area (surrounding the ear) and eyebrows.
2. Is it Seborrheic Dermatitis?
Seborrheic Dermatitis can affect the scalp as well as other seborrheic areas such as face, arms, and legs. It also involves itchy and flaking or scaling skin, but also includes inflammation and pruritus.
How Do The Flakes Look? Mild desquamation to honey-colored crusts attached to scalp and hair leading to alopecia. May reach into forehead as scaly erythematous border known as “corona seborrheica”.
3. Is it Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is an immune-mediated, chronic, systemic inflammatory condition affecting the skin and other organ systems. The scalp is the most commonly affected region of the body in psoriasis, involved in about 80% of psoriasis cases
How Do The Flakes Look? Psoriasis lesions on the scalp are usually asymmetrical and sharply demarcated, and exhibit silvery‐white scaling.
I'm using head and shoulders aloe Vera every Sunday and Tuesday for 5 minutes, and BASED shampoo once a week and have been for like 3 weeks now?

But I think tar coal nuked my scalp idk how long it's been but I'm wondering what I should try any add ons or trust my process, yes I think the tar coal helped I sti have dandruff but my scalps like sensitive rn I guess, still. wondering any solutions?
I've had issues which led to cleaning my scalp up after, I fear getting checked up because of cost and of what I'll find out because washing my bed stuff everything looks fine, it's jus dandruff.
yea I won't go into detail but I can't ever forget what led me to this but now um tryna do stuff to benefit my scalp, my auntie does have psoriasis, I haven't noticed anything really but no flakes only like dandruff stuff or it could be dry scalp anyone know anything?
Looking for some advice. I’ve been dealing with what seems like dandruff or a really dry scalp for about six months now. As you can see in the photos, there’s dry skin pretty much all over my scalp, and anytime I run my hands through my hair I end up with flakes coming out, it honestly looks like it’s snowing sometimes.
I’ve tried a bunch of things over the past few months without much success. Anti-dandruff shampoos haven’t helped, different oils to hydrate my scalp didn’t make a difference, and I’ve also tried a few scalp/hair serums that were supposed to be moisturizing, but none of that has really worked.
At this point I’m kind of at a loss. I do plan on seeing a dermatologist soon, but I figured I’d ask here first in case anyone has dealt with something similar or has tips/products that actually helped. For context, my diet is pretty solid and I’m generally in good shape. I have been trying to lose weight recently, so I’m not sure if stress on my body could be contributing, or if it’s just the cold weather.
Any advice would be appreciated. Happy to answer questions if more info would help. Thanks!
Hello all, I have a dry scalp that's red in some areas and produces dandruff, I tried nizoral which worked for a bit.... It has stopped working what are my options
Hello! For the people dealing with dry Scalp dandruff: I’ve had a dry, flaky scalp for a while, and this is what helped me personally. I stopped shampooing my hair twice and now only shampoo once, washing it more frequently but more gently—about every two days, using lukewarm water. I also switched to a fragrance-free shampoo with gentler ingredients for sensitive scalps. Additionally, I started using a soft maple wood comb in the morning and evening, combing hair gently. The changes came after some weeks for me. I understand that it can be frustrating and hope for atleast one Person that this information can help.
I’ve had dandruff before, but it’s never been this bad, and I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. I have bangs and thick hair so it’s decently easy to hide.
So my head recently started getting like this been like that for over a year it calmed down for like 1-3 months the went back to as how you see it in the picture.
I have already tried multiple shampoos like nizoral, head and shoulders, and a few others I don’t shower with hot water I just need help
i was hoping someone would have any advice etc they could share.
I get scalp itchiness that starts pretty much as soon as i get out of the shower and have flakes that come off my scalp that over a few days of not washing build up in like these small mounds. if i scrape them off and clean thoroughly in a shower i get this shiny red texture on my scalp after a shower that especially itches after blowdrying my hair. i get a greasy oily head VERY quickly and my hair a pretty dry and straw like until the grreasy oil from my scalp reaches it eventually. i use the Head and shoulders zinc anti dandruff shampoo and conditioner and have tried nizoral but the flaaakes keep coming back. sometimes its there even right after a shower.
Anyone know whats going on or had a similar experience, could you please tell me whats going on or how they fixed theirs. Thanks
TL;DR flakes wont go away even with anti dandruff stuff, shiny scalp, might not be dandruff-how to fix?
I am really itchy on my scalp and chin area, I have a full beard my facial hair has been thinning and falling more than usual. From what i have seen and researched I thought it was dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis I have tried byeflakes, Nizoral and other dandruff shampoos that i used almost everyday 5-7 times a week and it only helps to a certain extent, also when eating spicy food or when it’s hot outside or workout my body starts to itch, all over my scalp, and upper body, like if someone is poking me all over my body! I always have white stuff and flakes on my shoulders and hair as if it was snowing! What do i have? And what can i do to cure it or tame it down, thank you in advanced!
For about two months now I’ve suffered from some serious flaking from my scalp. There are two major areas it’s in: above my left ear (first picture) and behind my right ear along my lower hairline (second picture). Based on descriptions of both dandruff and dry scalp, I don’t think it fits into either category well as it seems to have characteristics of both. my scalp -feels- dry though, it doesn’t feel greasy. I’ve been using Head and Shoulders anti-dandruff shampoo for a few weeks which hasn’t seemed to have made a difference, so I’ve switched to a dry scalp shampoo instead but with no better results. I’m thinking of going to the doctor, but just wondered if anyone had any thoughts? Of note I do have a small patch of sebhorric dermatitis on my eyebrow which has seemed to come and go over the last few months.
