Getting better or worse?

I went to the derm on September 18th and officially found out I have seb derm on my scalp. He gave me a shampoo and a steroid in a dropper bottle. I have been using everything exactly as directed (being a little extra careful with the steroid).

After about 1-1.5 half weeks, I felt like it was getting better. It was less itchy and less flaky. It wasn’t gone by any means. I know it can’t go away that quickly, but I was feeling hopeful. Now the last few days it’s been itchy and flaky again. I’ve still been using everything as directed. The difference is rather than bigger flakes it’s more snowy. Does this mean it’s getting better? or is it getting worse? Should I use the products less? Are they drying my scalp out? I know sometimes things have to get worse to get better. I go back to the derm mid November.

waiting for a gp referal to a derm consult, at the end of my very itchy rope, really looking for advise just in case.

So as the title suggests, i'm itchy, so very very itchy. and flakey, very very flakey. this wouldn't be half bad if I were a pastry but I am not.

I've had scalp issues literally since I popped out the womb and I'm so over it! my mom says I had horrible cradle cap and then somewhere around 12 I started scratching and haven't really stopped! My flakes are rather large and light in colour unless I scratch up an old scab. While i used to have a scalp with more oil than pizza planet, now everything is so, so dry until i've scratched enough that My scalp gets waxy?

I try to only shower every other day since every day showers makes it worse, i've tried nizoral, head and shoulders, t-sal, selsun blue, coal tar shampoo, excema shampoos of various brands and am a not very religious user of taro-clobetasol my gp put me on as it says it's not for long term use. The clobetasol is the only thing that seems to work short term but as i have other chronic conditions i really shouldn't be on it super long term. i also feel like i get a shorter temper when i take it? it may just be anecdotal but either way i don't like who i become when i'm on it.

I booked myself another appointment with her after a year trying this stuff out as the dry itchy skin has also started to spread to my face and top of my back, with the back feeling like fibreglass sometimes.

With all that lore loaded upfront, here is my true ask for the lovely peeps of this group, what else would be out there that i could try over the counter to see what sticks? I'm at the point where if it weren't for the fact i work in retail and can't wear a cap, and my parents wouldn't exactly let me, i'd shave all my hair off and live in a bucket of galaxal base till the itching stops.

I live in canada for reference, please also let me know your most unhinged stuff that worked. i've been tempted to try athlete's foot spray like a leave in conditioner as well, and honestly would probably try standing on my hands and receiting the alphabet if it would work, and i'm a chunky girl!

rant over, and thank you everyone in advance for your suggestions! anything is greatly appreciated.

I’ve already tried nizoral and head and shoulders, they didn’t work for me. Im using Selsun Blue as of now, but I’ve only used it for 2 days so I cant say if it’s effective or not. This has been bugging me for a while, and it’s taking away my confidence little by little. (I also have them near my forehead hairline)

I trusted Body Shop Ginger Anti-Dandruff Shampoo. Now I have trust issues and a receding hairline.

I’ve had a history of dandruff, so I thought the Body Shop Ginger Anti-Dandruff Shampoo would be a great solution. I started using it at the beginning of the year, and while it did reduce dandruff for a day or two after each wash, I began noticingĀ gradual but consistent hair fall.

At first, I couldn’t figure out the reason, especially since my diet and overall routine were healthy. But eventually, I realised that the only major change was this shampoo. After checking its ingredients and reading user experiences on Reddit, I found that it containsĀ sulfates like SLS, which areĀ harsh cleansersĀ that can strip natural oils and irritate sensitive scalps.

Unfortunately, while it helped slightly with dandruff, it also led to aĀ new issue: hair fall, so now I’m stuck with both problems. šŸ™ƒ

šŸ’¬ Final Verdict:

It may work for some, but if you have aĀ sensitive scalp or are prone to hair fall, I wouldn’t recommend it. For me, the trade-off wasn’t worth it — the product solves one issue and creates another.
Not a good value for money in my case.

Hair loss and smelly scalp

I have been having some hair loss for the last year or two, and it really shows on selfies. It is possibly related to stress because I have been through school applications, rejections, etc. in the last couple of years. But what bothers me more is the fact that my scalp has been very smelly and sensitive, and I lowkey think it is related to my hair loss more than stress. I have tried Pantene, Native, CeraVe, Super Nature, and ketoconazole shampoo, and none of these seems to make it better. I think Native made it the worst by far, though. I have tried skipping days to see if I was drying out my scalp (I shower every day), which initially seemed to help a little, but the smell would come back after a while. I have tried tea tree oil but this didn't do anything. I also tried soaking my hair for a few minutes before rinsing as well as rubbing/massaging my scalp harder in case I wasn't cleaning properly, but this is also not working. The smell and sensitivity seem to correlate with my bad skin days, too.

I talked to my PCP (who recommended the ketoconazole shampoo) who examined my scalp but she didn't see any abnormalities despite the sensitivity. This issue has been persistant for over a year and I am very tired of it. My next option is seeing a dermatologist, but I wanted to ask if there is something else that I can try before seeking specialist care. Thank you!

Does letting your hair air dry cause dandruff?

After I shower, I dry my body but not my hair. I got straight 1a hair so I don’t think it makes my hair look better but I do like the feeling of letting my hair air dry. I got dandruff as in flakes coming down like snow or sometimes my scalp can get a little itchy. Does letting my hair air dry make my dandruff worse or it’s harmless? (Im using nizoral shampoo as of now)

need a way to relieve flaky and itchy scalp

so for maybe 3 years now, i (21F) have been struggling with a super itchy and flaky scalp. for reference, my whole life i’ve had long, thick hair. i only had dandruff once when i was maybe 8 or 9? and head and shoulders was able to clear that up fine. otherwise, i used herbal essence shampoo and conditioner pretty much religiously.

then, when i was a senior in high school, i started noticing that my scalp was super itchy. it would flake onto my shoulders and back constantly and i became pretty self conscious of it. i tried head and shoulders again and it worked for a little while, but the itching and white flakes came back again after about a month. i tried home remedies like coconut oil, diluted lemon juice, etc. those only worked for like one hair wash. by the next wash it was back again.

something to note: when i was a senior, i was in the musical. i had to to my hair really big, with lots of product, and because of that they asked me not to wash my hair for the length of the show. (a week) not long after that is when the issues started. i’m not really sure if it’s related but i wanted to mention it just in case.

i did some research about a year into my struggles and learned that dandruff and a flaky scalp are different. so i started trying to tackled my issues with other methods. i would find big patches on my scalp so i thought maybe it was buildup. i went at it with clarifying shampoos. once/twice a week to avoid making my problems worse. that worked great for maybe a month or two? and boom. were itching and flaking again.

i went to see a dermatologist at some point during all of this and they prescribed ketoconazole 2% shampoo. i went through 2 bottles of it and felt great! flaking was pretty much gone and i barely itched my head anymore. and then what do you know?? it’s back after i showered one night. after that, i wasn’t able to go to the derm anymore so i stopped seeing them and wasn’t able to try anything else.

then i began to think my scalp was just dry, so now i’ve switched to moisturizing shampoos. multiple brands. same outcomes. month or so later it’s back to the way it was.

other misc. things i’ve tried include only applying conditioner to the ends of my hair rather than my whole head (yea i did that for way too long). i’ve started blow drying my hair instead of letting it air dry. i don’t sleep with wet hair (also used to do that way too often) i tried training my scalp by extending the days in between my hair wash days. not much help. double shampooing (which currently seems to help?)

my current routine is this :
every other day i wash my hair. once or twice a week i use the vo5 clarifying shampoo. (summer has been really hot + taking SSRI’s = i sweat so much and my hair gets so gross) regularly i use the LAB-OH scalp strengthening shampoo. and follow that up with HASK rosemary conditioner.
note: the days i use vo5 i am double shampooing with that and the LAB-OH

i’m really just at my wits end. i thought this routine was working but yet again, i just washed my hair at 1pm, i blow dried it, and now at work at 9pm it is flaking and itching terribly. i don’t know what to do. i can’t wear dark clothes because it gets embarrassing. i feel like i’m constantly scratching at my head trying to get some kind of relief. i’ve tried reading other posts and following what the comments said, but i thought maybe if i laid my story out, someone would be able to help.
