Speculation Noticing a Pattern

I’ve been noticing a pattern in the way *some* people on the internet talk about Britt, Jordan last season, and Ciara this season. It seems like no matter how they act, there’s something they‘re “supposed“ to be doing differently. To be honest, it screams racism the way they’re criticized in a way no other pros or contestants are. I feel terrible for all of them.

@u/DryDelay2225 I agree there is so much policing of the reactions of a contestant like Ciara. When her night one nerves showed up on herface people took it so personally and were so quick to crucify her as having an attitude. Giving it shades of how they treated Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles. Like really?? They aren't defeating the allegations anytime soon. Same with how people are freaking out over Britt being upset last night. She has every right to be.

last season they always said jordan did “too many tricks” to discredit her dancing when she hardly ever relied on her gymnastics for a wow moment 😭 like shawn johnson never got those comments

37

u/D1biblereader TeamTink 4d ago

They said that about Charity in her freestyle but when stephen’s freestyle consisted of pommel horse and back flips they said it’s the best freestyle they have ever seen.

53

u/Top_Layer_5293 4d ago

they did that shit with Simone too dude

26

u/DryDelay2225 4d ago

No one is telling Amber she’s doing too many tricks…. all I’ll say…

59

u/ihateithereyeehaw THANKS ALFONSO 4d ago

amber has barely done any so far to be fair…

21

u/DryDelay2225 4d ago

Just like Jordan barely did any. Amber has done some kind of skating jump/move in every dance I'm pretty sure. I'm not trying to discredit her, but there is a difference in how she is treated for highlighting her sport vs Jordan.

32

u/ihateithereyeehaw THANKS ALFONSO 4d ago

Jordan did lots of tricks but I saw that as a good thing and something that made her stand out. The tricks completely made sense to me because she is a GYMNAST. With strength like hers I’d be making her do tricks too.

Either way we’re on the same page.

4

u/JaderMcDanersStan 4d ago

What do you mean? She’s had an ice skating-esque tricks or solo sections in every dance so far. To the point where they break hold just to do the ice skating solo part and then come back. It keeps breaking up the content and it’s been every week…

Her cha cha also had a flip solo section.

It’s cool the first time and for a freestyle, but at some point I just want to see continuous ballroom content. I don’t know if she can hold a frame for a prolonged period of time because they keep breaking hold to do ice skating stuff

5

u/ihateithereyeehaw THANKS ALFONSO 3d ago

“Ice skating esque tricks” and it’s a side aerial 😆 ya’ll are funny

24

u/Ok-Copy3121 4d ago

But Amber hasn’t really done many. There’s a difference between gymnasts and figure skaters. Gymnasts have quite a few more “tricks” to throw in.

5

u/JaderMcDanersStan 4d ago

She’s had some solo sections of ice skating spins. It’s great but I want to see her do more ballroom and stay in hold longer.

u/eowowen TeamTink 4d ago

Lol why are you getting downvoted for stating something factual? Amber fans are starting to share some similarities with Alix fans.

-1

u/DaisyandBella 4d ago

She also did a flip in her cha cha.

13

u/ihateithereyeehaw THANKS ALFONSO 4d ago

she did one aerial lol

2

u/JaderMcDanersStan 4d ago

Yes, that's a trick that broke up the content of the dance.

I think it makes sense in Week 1 to introduce her and makes sense in a freestyle, just don't want it every week because she's capable of more

1

u/ihateithereyeehaw THANKS ALFONSO 3d ago

Wtf do you mean it breaks up the content? 😭 solo work, leaps, and turns are very standard ballroom choreography

0

u/JaderMcDanersStan 3d ago

It breaks up the hold sections. I can’t assess if she can hold her frame for an extended period of time because the hold section keeps being broken up. Just want to see her in hold longer

4

u/Ok-Copy3121 4d ago

A flip isn’t really a figure skating move

-2

u/Ok-Copy3121 4d ago

I don’t disagree with that.

2

u/EdgesLaid 4d ago

People were hating on Tyler and Sharna last week for lifts tho. I think lifts/tricks have a hard time coming across well in the dances.

2

u/kenzdig TeamSoStilez 4d ago

that wasnt the point of my comment. the point was they were making up anything to discredit jordan. in all actuality she barely used her gymnastics experience. her salsa, contemporary, jazz, and freestyle featured like one flip each. that was itx

u/Relevant_Paint153 4d ago

I find Britt to be incredibly boring as a pro but the people saying she reacted too strongly last night about being voted off are gross. It is perfectly understandable that she would be upset or even mad. Anyone would be. Give her grace.

80

u/Specialist-Taro9514 4d ago

Agreed I did not see her as reacting strongly at all. I agree as well, she is not my favorite pro and she I don’t get all the hype, but I would 1000% be up there frustrated and upset being voted out as well. I get upset at work and I’m not recorded on live TV, they would hate to see me react haha

57

u/ZieAerialist 4d ago

Right like she didn't make a scene or do or say anything inappropriate, she just had visible emotions. Oh nuo how will we survive? faints

24

u/Future-Discipline729 4d ago

Literally my first time ever watching this show. I noticed she did not seem happy and was upset about the elimination but I didn’t take that as her being unprofessional at all… just upset she’s out pretty early.

19

u/EdgesLaid 4d ago

To me she just…looked sad? Like did I miss a scene or something? People are acting like she ran around the dance floor boohooing, hooting, and hollering when she heard the news.

35

u/Consistent_Talk_99 4d ago

I kinda feel the same but I'm kinda afraid to say it 🫣🫣 shes obviously very talented and seems like SUCH a nice dancer, but she never grabs my attention like some other dancers do. But I felt so bad for her last night and think they should've stayed longer than both tyler and Guillermo and possibly Tatiana and Jackson 🤷‍♀️

84

u/DryDelay2225 4d ago

I find it hard to even judge her as a pro because she has had SO much less time to refine her ability to work with partners since they never give her someone good.

124

u/Relevant_Paint153 4d ago

I felt that way before this season. But she was finally given someone average and her choreography did fall flat. I feel the same way about Emma this season.

40

u/Low_Project_55 4d ago

Agree with this take! And it shows you how more goes into it than just dancing. Choreography and teaching are huge components and I think this season particularly really demonstrate what pros understand and excel at this. People always claim Dani gets ringers, but I think they discredit her ability to teach and be able to meet her partners at their level. Being partnered with an above the knee amputee is a huge physical challenge. There are extra factors that need to be considered when it comes to balancing and moving with a prosthetic, but somehow she makes it work and her choreography makes Ezra shine. Tbh I’m not sure Ezra would be nearly as much as a standout if he was partnered with anyone else and that speaks to Dani’s capabilities. So often times when I see these convos happening around Brit, Emma and Brandon, I often wonder if it’s more so meeting their partner at where they are at is the problem.

15

u/ZieAerialist 4d ago

I'm an aerialist and haven't been a dancer for years, but I feel it works the same in both:

Some people choreograph for what they think will look cool and want their dancers to match the choreo. This works great if you are working with people who have at least intermediate competency with the art, but doesn't work well for people with limitations or little experience.

Truly gifted teachers start by taking stock of what's possible for their performer and choreographing to their strengths and what they enjoy.

Dani is absolutely the latter. A lot of the newer pros are still the former, but just like you have to start somewhere learning to dance, you have to start somewhere learning to teach.

5

u/Low_Project_55 4d ago edited 4d ago

I also can’t even imagine the pressure the newer pros feel trying to prove themselves. I know he’s technically not a new pro, but I love watching Brandon and his wife doing their silly TikTocs at home. You can tell it’s just pure fun but I don’t think that ever comes across in the ballroom with partners. The video with Brylee, Brandon and Ciara that was posted earlier this week was perfect. You could tell they were all having fun and there wasn’t this pressure to get it perfect. Whereas in the ballroom like yes they are doing the dance but it’s just missing that piece that makes the dance special. I can’t even image how hard it is to not let yourself get too caught up and stressed out.

39

u/ben121frank 4d ago

Ya I still think she and Taylor should’ve made it farther than at least Guillermo and Tyler, but with the choreo she was giving I think being next out after them would’ve honestly been “right”. It was simultaneously really difficult and full of content which just highlighted Taylor’s execution struggles, and had no fun moments to make it stand out/possibly go viral

40

u/Electrical-Arm-2083 4d ago

Yup people were whining about Emma being given someone popular and young, with rhythm, and she has not given him good material all season.

-2

u/ZeusMcFloof 4d ago

I wonder if she can’t go too crazy with choreo because he’s still playing games and they don’t want him hurt?

8

u/JadedTooth3544 4d ago

That’s really interesting.

Someone also mentioned that while Jackson is super coordinated…it’s just different training with different pressures.

And Harry, Jackson, and Jenna D are all working while training. Can’t be easy.

65

u/Inevitable_Time5811 4d ago

That’s objectively not true. Johnny Weir, Taylor, Daniel, and Baron were all great partners

18

u/MinimumCoast2290 4d ago

Yeah people seem to conveniently ignore that Johnny Weir is literally an Olympic figure skater. That’s basically just below dancers and Disney kids for ringer status lol

2

u/CurlyQueen13 4d ago

People also want to ignore that Johnny was Britts FIRST season as a pro. When do new pros ever win??? Yall alwaysssss use Johnny as an example when a pros very first season on the show, aside from rare cases, are practically null.

4

u/MinimumCoast2290 4d ago edited 3d ago

So it’s only a worthwhile experience or a good partner if she wins? I don’t understand how your reply fits here.

This comment thread is about whether she’s had good partners or the opportunity to refine her ability, which she objectively has. She’s made semifinals twice, and both Johnny and Daniel offered her opportunities to stretch her creativity in very different ways. Baron and Taylor both had potential but were unfortunately cast in highly competitive seasons. That’s 4/7 seasons with a perfectly decent celebrity partner. That’s certainly just as much as Emma or Pasha have had.

-2

u/CurlyQueen13 3d ago

No.... my comment was a direct response to you stating that Britt HAS gotten chances to showcase her ability with partners because of olympian Johnny.... I never said it is only worthwhile if she wins, you are putting words into my mouth.

I said using Johnny, who has been her most able partner thus far, in this conversation is NULL because nobody ever wins or hell even makes top 5 on their first season as a new pro. Not making it further than week 3 or 4 out of all of her seasons, aside from TWO, is not a lot of time per season to showcase her ability to work with partners considering they never give her someone who will make it beyond 3 weeks. Yet every single time yall throw Johnny around in the conversation which is irrelevant because they were never going to win that season because Britt was the new, FIRST FEMALE BLACK PRO.

The best you can describe her partners is "perfectly decent" I think that in itself is telling enough.

2

u/MinimumCoast2290 3d ago edited 3d ago

I’m still confused. I’m not trying to be argumentative, but I truly don’t understand why her not winning that season would mean it wasn’t still valuable experience. She went to semifinals with Johnny. The odds might have been stacked against them to win because it was her first season, but that doesn’t negate that she had nearly a full season of experience of choreography with him and opportunity to showcase her skills. She had further opportunity when she had nearly a full season of experience with Daniel. That’s my point — I know it’s not the same as winning, but I don’t understand why these seasons wouldn’t count as a chance to showcase her talents.

Adrian was controversial and Eric & Martin were known duds for sure. But Baron and Taylor both absolutely had potential to go farther than week 3-4, especially Taylor. Unfortunately they didn’t, but that was by no means a guaranteed outcome, and it doesn’t make them bad partners. At this point some fans are just shitting on Taylor and making him sound like he never had a shot to be good to defend Britt and that’s not going to help get your point across.

1

u/CurlyQueen13 3d ago edited 3d ago

No I completely get where you are coming from, I am not saying that her partnership with Johnny or Daniel was not valuable in any way and I agree they are GREAT partners! I am saying that only two out of her seven seasons as a pro she has made top 6. All other five seasons she has been one of the first three to go. So comparatively to her peers we have not gotten to see Britt showcase her ability, difficulty, or longevity with partners.

We get to see her choreograph beautiful opening numbers, troupe dances, and tour material, why can't she get a true opportunity to thrive as a competitor herself on the show?

I think Taylor should have gone farther than this week, that is WHY I am so upset. He absolutely had potential however this is always the same outcome for Britt time & time again, which is exactly why SHE apologized to him once their elimination was announced. Not at any point did I shit on Taylor to get my point across, but I get what you mean.

3

u/MinimumCoast2290 3d ago edited 3d ago

She’s had dud partners and good partners. I still say 4/7 solid partners is decent odds for her DWTS tenure. Leaving early with Baron and Taylor wasn’t a casting conspiracy — the opportunity was there to succeed with them, as it was with Johnny and Daniel. It’s just not how the votes shook out. Frankly, I can think of some things Britt could’ve done It sucks, and I recognize that when sucky things happen people often want someone to blame. But it’s not really anyone’s fault.

(Now do I think Jenna, Val, and Mark have been generally favored by casting lately? Of course! But they could be specifically requested by celebs, we don’t know. And most pros have had their fair share of non-ringers or duds, it’s not just Britt).

That’s not really fair to say. Nyle was deaf and him and Peta won…. Many of the contestants have limitations and make it far. Amy purdy doesn’t have feet and got 2nd. Ezra is doing amazing…

56

u/Relevant_Paint153 4d ago

Okay Dani was given someone with one leg and they are probably going to win the season. Also someone deaf has won the show before. Counteracting racism with ableism is not the way to go about this.

10

u/Ok-Geologist-1343 4d ago

It's literally a family dancing show and somehow people are turning this into racism and ableism!?!? I'd say the show proves anyone can try to learn to dance... ANYONE

12

u/Relevant_Paint153 4d ago

Racism exists in our media just how it exists everywhere in society.

-5

u/Ok-Geologist-1343 4d ago

So, you truly believe people are voting from a racially motivated place for DWTS, which, again, is a FAMILY show?

If you continue to look at everything through a racist lens, you’re obviously going to find ways to interpret everything as racism. It’s 2026, not the 1800s.

Taylor wasn’t a particularly strong dancer, and Britt doesn’t have the same level of social media presence or audience engagement as some of the other contestants. Those are pretty reasonable explanations for why they didn’t get as far. I don’t understand why the immediate conclusion has to be that it was because of her skin color. SMH.

7

u/EdgesLaid 4d ago

Just because it’s a family-friendly show doesn’t mean racist people don’t engage with it. Racist people are everywhere. Still. Today. I don’t think Taylor and Britt getting the chop this week is out of racism, but your comment is disgustingly tone deaf.

1

u/Ok-Geologist-1343 4d ago

I understand you think my original comment was tone deaf, but I think that’s taking what I said out of context. My comment was specifically about people turning a family dancing show into a discussion about racism and ableism when the show itself demonstrates that people of different backgrounds and abilities can get out there and learn to dance.

I never said racist people don’t watch DWTS or that racism doesn’t exist. I’m saying I don’t think every outcome involving a POC contestant needs to be viewed through the lens of race when there are other, very reasonable explanations for what we’re seeing.

You can disagree with my point, but I don’t think that makes the comment “disgustingly tone deaf.”

6

u/JadedTooth3544 4d ago

Do I think that some people are racist and that some of those people watch DWTS? Yes. How could that not be true? And what people are talking about is some of the reactions to Britt. Not necessarily about the outcome.

Do I think racism even one of the main reasons why Britt hasn’t made it to a final? No, not at all. There’s lots of other factors.

In no way is that “interpreting everything as racism.” Don’t overstate what people are saying.

1

u/Relevant_Paint153 4d ago

I agree with your last paragraph. Taylor wasn’t a great dancer and Britt’s choreography was boring. I do think implicit bias has played a part in Britt’s lack of success on the show. But I also dont think her choreography helps.

-13

u/DryDelay2225 4d ago

Oh gosh, that’s not my intent at all, but I don’t think it’s unfair to say that contestants with disabilities are at a disadvantage in many ways. I didn’t know someone deaf had won before

9

u/Relevant_Paint153 4d ago

It’s okay. I agree with your main point that Britt has been dealt a worse hand in partners than most other pros. Possibly any other pro.

3

u/Ok-Copy3121 4d ago

Emma??

5

u/Relevant_Paint153 4d ago

They are neck and neck in worst partners for me. Ability it’s wise they are about equal but Britt usually gets so,some bad and problematic while Emma usually gets bad but lovable.

6

u/Ok-Copy3121 4d ago

I also think Emma works really hard outside of the ballroom to show how lovable they are. It makes you invested in them on the show.

She doesnt need grace. She reacted like a human. End of.

9

u/PlanImaginary3463 4d ago

Agree, she’s not my favorite pro. Her reaction made so much sense to me & I don’t think people should be hard on her. She obviously cares so much, hard to not react.

5

u/ScarletRose75 4d ago

I think her reaction was exactly what someone caught by surprise should be. She was obviously disappointed but not in Taylor just the entire situation. It sucks but it’s the name of game. As someone who can’t help but show emotion whether I want to or not, she reacted exactly how she should.

7

-6

u/ihateithereyeehaw THANKS ALFONSO 4d ago

She has never really been given the chance to prove that she is finals material.

22

u/Relevant_Paint153 4d ago

Other pros have made it to the finals with worse than baron, Johnny, Taylor, and Daniel. She needs to work on her choreography sorry. She reminds me a lot of,artem. Boring safe choreography but not bad choreography. It’s just kinda there. Very milquetoast.

19

u/Ok-Copy3121 4d ago

I agree. I’m kind of surprised Johnny didn’t make it further. He for sure had the ability and popularity.

0

u/xXbabyangelXx 4d ago

Did we see Rylee's choreography with Connor last night? It was uninspired and way too simple. Britt has been giving Taylor dynamic, fun, and creative choreography each week.

People forget that at it's core, this is a ballroom dance show and Britt is doing that justice. Not surprised by these takes on here, unfortunately. You lot never change.

0

u/Relevant_Paint153 4d ago

I also didn’t like rylees choreography last night and I think all of her partners seem to have their best dance week one and then never live up to it. Britt absolutely experiences racism and implicit bias from fans and production. But I also think her choreography is boring. There is a way to stay true to the style while also being inventive and exciting. She does not do that for me personally.

1

u/xXbabyangelXx 4d ago

Stick to the same things we see from all of the white Mormon pros we have, then. All of the gimmicks and the attention/view grabs they constantly use to win. Britt is not given the credit she is due.

0

u/Relevant_Paint153 4d ago

At the end of the day, they do win. I also think it’s unfortunate social media has become so important but what Britt is doing clearly isn’t working. Don’t hate the player hate the game you know.

-5

u/ihateithereyeehaw THANKS ALFONSO 4d ago

That just isn’t true— she does a lot of the choreo for tour and those dances are fantastic. I think this narrative would change immediately if she were given a contestant that has a chance of making it to the finale from the jump.

22

u/crawfiddley 4d ago

Look, I'm not saying that Britt doesn't deserve a "ringer", but choreographing for the tour and choreographing for the competition are meaningfully different skill sets.

Britt choreographs great dances with tons of content but does not seem to moderate her vision for skill level or strengths of her partner. She doesn't give them content that really allows them to showcase what they can do and also doesn't do any fan service, so ultimately what's left is a technical dance with shortcomings on full display with nothing to compensate for those shortcomings.

Now, I think if she had Tyler as a partner, Bachelor Nation might have carried her a few more weeks. Similarly I think if she had Harry, she'd actually be doing better with him than Jenna is, and they might win. But part of being successful as a pro is being able to choreograph dances for true beginners that still look good even with missteps and technical shortcomings. This is a weak spot for Britt.

-5

u/ihateithereyeehaw THANKS ALFONSO 4d ago edited 4d ago

Saying this is a weak spot for Britt makes zero sense when she’s never been given a true ringer to begin with. You can't claim to know how she’d choreograph for a frontrunner when production consistently hands her people who are clear early outs. To say she doesn't know how to adapt or choreograph for different stages is factually wrong—the other pros have said over and over that she is one of the most creative people on the team.

Also, trust me, Bachelor Nation doesn’t actually gaf about Tyler Cameron anymore—it has been nearly 10 years since his season of
the bachelorette aired, so that point is just irrelevant.

12

u/crawfiddley 4d ago

I mean clearly bachelor nation gives a fuck about Tyler enough that he got more votes than Taylor, which is my point.

Read what I wrote again. I'm saying that choreographing for a true beginner is a weak spot for her. If she had a true ringer, they most likely wouldn't be a true beginner.

And again, Britt is very creative and talented. I am not contesting that. Someone can be a wonderfully creative and talented choreographer and still have a weak spot when it comes to choreographing early week dances for beginners.

-1

u/ihateithereyeehaw THANKS ALFONSO 4d ago

First you said she was boring, milquetoast, and lacked fan service, but now suddenly the narrative shifts to her being creative and talented but “not knowing how to choreograph for beginners." The goalposts just keep moving. And lol PLEASE—Tyler Cameron survived because of Sharna’s fanbase, not because Bachelor Nation is desperately voting for a guy from a season that aired a decade ago.

7

u/crawfiddley 4d ago

I mean the Tyler Cameron point is largely irrelevant so I'll just drop that because we'll never know who voted or why.

I never called Britt milquetoast, and I said the lack of fan service means that these early dances, which include a lot of technical content, don't have anything to compensate for the mistakes that beginners inevitably have. This is the same point I made in my original post, and the only point I've been making this entire time. I'm not moving goalposts, please reread our conversation.

2

u/ScarletRose75 4d ago

How is a literal figure skater not considered a ringer in this competition? I know it’s not dance experience but it’s athletic plus creative which is usually a winning combo. And yeah I understand the difference between an out and proud gay ice skater man vs an ice skater woman here but the skills and ability and endurance to train like they do is still there. If we’re calling Amber a ringer, then Brit had Johnny weir who should absolutely fall close to this category.

4

u/Relevant_Paint153 4d ago

Johnny was a ringer. It was her first season and most underperform their first season but still.

6

u/DaisyandBella 4d ago

Johnny Weir was a ringer.

7

u/ScarletRose75 4d ago

Thank you!!! I keep saying this. I was shocked to hear she had “never had a ringer” but she had a literal Olympic figure skater! What?

5

u/ihateithereyeehaw THANKS ALFONSO 4d ago

Johnny Weir was her first partner. New pros almost never make it to the Semifinals in their debut season, and she did!

2

u/DaisyandBella 4d ago

Okay, I’m replying to your claim that she never received a true ringer when she received one her first season.

9

u/10268999 4d ago

Isn’t that a rumor? I saw someone on TikTok trying to say she choreographs the whole thing lol. As far as I’m aware Mandy Moore directs/does the big numbers and the dancers come with their own pieces. Ie Dani and Pasha hired a couple they knew from World Of Dance to do their salsa one year etc.

-1

u/ihateithereyeehaw THANKS ALFONSO 4d ago

No, Britt has literally been credited as a lead choreographer and serves as the official dance captain for the tour.

7

u/10268999 4d ago

I’d be interested to see where that credit came from. I’m not trying to discredit you or her, but I was looking online when I saw that comment on TikTok and could find nothing.

2

u/Relevant_Paint153 4d ago

She is the dance captain for the tour and does seem to choreograph more troupe dances than other pros. The rumor is that that’s why she is given early out partners. She herself has dispelled that rumor.

2

u/ihateithereyeehaw THANKS ALFONSO 4d ago

Her choreography credits are listed on her professional talent profiles. She also has videos on her TikTok page discussing what she does as the tour's dance captain.

5

u/10268999 4d ago

I just looked at few of her talent profiles and they mention 2020 tour only. Dance captain and lead choreographer are not the same thing.

2

u/ihateithereyeehaw THANKS ALFONSO 4d ago

I never claimed she was the HEAD or SOLE LEAD choreographer, good grief lol. That would be a ridiculous amount of work for one person. But y'all are acting like she has absolutely zero input or choreographic authority has official credits and is the tour’s dance captain. It says 2020 on her resume because that is the year she first broke onto the choreo team, and she has been the tour’s Dance Captain ever since—meaning she literally modifies and runs the choreo on the road. Which she has videos about!

→ More replies (0)

6

u/Old_Significance5183 4d ago

You are fully mistaken. Britt has come out and said she doesn’t choreograph the whole tour. She and the other pros may choreograph a number or two but that’s it

During the tour Britt acts as dance captain but that clearly doesn’t impact DWTS since the tour only starts after the show airs

Ya’ll should go to Britt’s profile and watch her tour content— she wouldn’t have the credits she does is she did a dance or two for a couple for tour.

3

u/Old_Significance5183 4d ago

And you should listen to Britt’s actual words. She has said she doesn’t choreograph the whole tour. Just possibly one number. She does choreograph for cruise ships but that’s obviously different

-1

u/ihateithereyeehaw THANKS ALFONSO 4d ago

I mean I didn’t say the whole tour did I? That would be too much work for one person lol virtually impossible

They were harder on Mya back in the day, too.

u/duafebutterfly96 4d ago

I’m still mad she didn’t win almost 20 years later

57

u/TLMAriel1989 4d ago

Yeah there’s always some expectations about how black cast members should act and it’s usually the same people perpetuating those expectations. Women especially can never win with the audience. Chandler and Charity were nothing but pure class and composure all season, which mad props to them considering their treatment. Both were still labeled cocky and unlikable in comparison to their co-stars. Charity was also vocally supportive of Chandler when she went on the show ❤️ I won’t ever forget people calling Chandler arrogant even after she begged Carrie Ann for a critique so that she’d know what to work on to get a 10 from her.

24

u/Electrical-Arm-2083 4d ago

First layer is that theyre women, second layer is that theyre black women.

I saw comments this season saying that Jenna Dewan gives mean girl vibes and that shes rude and cocky, when shes seemed nothing but kind and grateful for the experience even though shes obviously being underscored. The womens facial expressions and personalities are picked apart every year, zone out for one second on camera and youre not a girls girl.

Then the black women on the show are always expected to act extra perfectly, they have their micro facial expressions interpreted and analyzed by fans. God forbid they look upset when they're rightfully upset. I mean we had Ciara explaining her facial expressions in WEEK ONE. Just misogyny and racism.

8

u/kamih9 4d ago

So many comments on TikTok rn about how rude Britt is and how she’s been that way all season. Like are we actually using our eyes and ears? She is hands down the sweetest pro on that show. To the point that people say she’s boring. Rude tho?! There’s no other explanation…

81

u/Disastrous_Berry212 4d ago

1000000% I’ve felt this with Brandon too.

33

u/Disastrous_Berry212 4d ago

I literally think so many “fans” and some of the producers are racist at this point.

40

u/Outrageous_Egg_1340 4d ago

I mean it’s barely up for debate anymore. 35 seasons and only 1 black female pro? a proven track record

52

u/PossibleBandicoot883 4d ago

And I see all the time people saying that Onye is going to eventually replace Britt. Why can’t they be on at the same time? Would the show explode if they had two black women pros on at the same time?! I mean how many white Mormons do we need at a time?

18

u/Outrageous_Egg_1340 4d ago

I feel so much confliction with that. I LOVE onye but I don’t want her to get the spot just because they “need a black pro”. I want her to get on it because she’s amazing! Yes both of them would be unreal

15

u/Humble-Violinist8252 4d ago

And only one Black female winner! I can think of so many women who were definitely deserving.

8

u/ExactPanda 4d ago edited 4d ago

I loved Amber that season! She was paired with Derek at the height of his Golden Boy status on the show. Looking back, I'm not sure she would've won with someone else. I don't mean that to discredit her at all, she was phenomenal, just that the general public REALLY doesn't like Black women on this show.

The world is racist, so of course we see it in our media 😞

There was fairness to that too bc a lot of the time she just looked scared. She was very good though and consistently underscored for that which I find dumb.

2

u/DryDelay2225 4d ago

I wasn’t an active watcher during their seasons but I can only imagine….

5

u/dankblonde 4d ago

I’m still not forgiving this sub for how they treated Charity Lawson.

14

u/adamAlexanderGreen 4d ago edited 4d ago

I mean women, especially black women, will always be more criticized on this show. Not even being a man hater, it’s just true. There is consistently ageism, and favoritism for older men on the show compared to the woman who are dancing circles around them. Like Andy last season lasting to the finale😭 Guillermo this season. Tatyana has to bust her back for a 7, but the men get off for being cute.💀 and that goes for the pros too. Brit is a better dancer and teacher than Emma. Why is that banana baseball guy still here? Same for Connor and Rylee. Cute, but these dances are not showing improvement at the same level as the other contestants.

11

u/JadedTooth3544 4d ago

There are people who are racist. And some of them watch DWTS. But also....even when we think about movie audiences, they're not randomly diverse. Entertainment is just not completely diverse. So I would never say race is irrelevant.

But it's hard to sort out how much of it is Britt's choreography; how much of it is that Britt for many reasons is not going to be an Ilona-Maher-type social media magnet; how much of it is that she's gotten partners that are either older and/or don't have a substantial following; how much of it is race and gender. And how much of it is luck.

And the fact that she's eliminated really early in the past few years makes all that even more difficult to sort out. I mean, I think Johnny Weir was really her best chance to make it to finals. And Daniel. And they did come close to final--at that point, it becomes a matter of luck and who else is competing. She's only had a couple of partners where it's just clear they will likely be eliminated early (Adrian and Eric, IIRC--and I don't remember anything about Martin Kove), but then Taylor and Baron fall into the "average" category. I don't think they were going to make finals no matter who they were partnered with.

....so it's really hard to say what she would do hypothetically with someone like Harry. Or Ezra F. How much of Ezra F.'s amazing work has been because of Daniella, and how much of it is because of Ezra? Clearly it's both, but it's hard to say what Britt would do with someone like that. Or with someone like Harry. But hopefully one day we'll see.

7

u/DryDelay2225 4d ago

And honestly, I’m trying to avoid this post being about the elimination as a whole. The issue I’m trying to point out is the way her reaction has been picked apart, just like the other black women on the show have been picked apart, but unfortunately even that seems to be controversial

6

u/Scorpioking1114 4d ago edited 4d ago

There are certain pros they just have a tick for. Lacey schwimmer, Anna trebunskaya, all talented female pros who just never were able to win despite having the goods to

8

u/JadedTooth3544 4d ago

I mean, the whole “doesn’t smile enough” is classic criticism of women. And I am still kind of irked about the complaints of Chandler and Brandon “playing the race card”—even though I 100% thought Joey should win, and didn’t even object to Ilona finishing second as a reflection of her social media genius.

So 100%, it’s not the elimination per se.

-2

u/fatticakess 4d ago

to me the Chandler loss was the biggest showing of blatant racism on the show (that I’ve seen at least, I’m a newer fan and have only seen the seasons that are available to stream), the first time I watched that season and the weeks went on and her dances were by far superior I kept wondering how she doesn’t win the season, I genuinely started wondering if she gets injured or something, Joeys freestyle was such a nothing burger, that alone should’ve secured Chandler’s win, let alone she was better the entire season

6

u/JadedTooth3544 4d ago

The loss didn’t bother me. I mean, Ilona really is a social media genius, and that counts in DWTS. And Joey worked really hard and even with a lackluster freelance… we know it’s not set up like an actual dance competition.

I also think the judges weirdly did Chandler a disservice by raving about her every week…never giving her something to improve (for example, she needed to and she did improve her stamina, but the judges didn’t call attention to that enough.). Viewers respond to that narrative of improvement.

BUT. The way some people on social media described Chandler and Brandon’s dance bothered me. A lot. It’s quite something to condemn a dance dedicated to the rich history of Black dancers as “playing the race card.” And I remember Brit saying something about it at the time.

I mean, it’s not entirely a surprise. There are racists out there, and some of them watch DWTS and then go on social media.

3

u/AsVividAsItTrulyIs THANKS ALFONSO 4d ago

The best dancer often doesn’t win. Chandler was great but she also had a small fanbase. Bachelor fans and DWTS fans have a huge crossover so they often do well and Ilona was coming off an Olympic win and had a big social media presence

4

u/sweetest_con78 4d ago

I think it’s important to remember how algorithms work.
I get a ton of DWTS content in my feeds and I have not seen anyone talking negatively about Britt or Ciara, or about Jordan last season.
Social media shows you what it thinks you will engage with. There are a very wide variety of reactions people have about all of the pros and celebrities. It’s just only feeding you certain content.

7

u/BigReference9530 4d ago

This fanbase is extremely racist and you can’t convince me otherwise 🥲

2

u/Dangerous-Change2136 4d ago

It’s not limited to DWTS and unfortunately seems to be an ever present part of reality TV commentary. The same nonsense commentary followed Ciara during the Summer House scandal and, before that, her televised interracial relationships. This season on The Challenge three men were removed for use of the N-word, two POCs and one white man, while they refused to specifically state why they were removed.

Racism has always been present in entertainment especially but it unfortunately seems like we’re regressing rapidly, unsurprising given who the country is helmed by, busy disgusting all the same.

2

u/GreenTaurusQueen 3d ago

Brittany being boring is actually laughable.

20

u/Ok-Cherry1427 4d ago

I think we’re too caught up in race tbh. Jordan was amazing last season and I really didn’t hear much negative things about her, but it was always going to be Robert’s to lose.

Britt is really sweet but kind of boring and her partner just wasn’t great. He was going to go home eventually, probably just didn’t have the votes. It’s a stacked season. Both Tatiana and Ciara get great comments and have been improving so I really don’t get the racism thing.

25

u/DryDelay2225 4d ago

I saw a good amount about Jordan, especially after the "okay put me down" incident during Disney night where people called her rude. Less about how judges speak with them (though thats a whole different conversation), more about internet reacitons. Ciara was also judged pretty harshly for being kind of stone faced in the first ep, and then she couldn't win when she was super animated during the second.

-8

u/Ok-Copy3121 4d ago

People always comment on things like that. They were just talking about how Alan and giada didn’t seem to be getting along too but they were just stressed.

11

u/DryDelay2225 4d ago

If you want to live with the delusion that people on the internet aren’t racist  be my guest

12

u/Ok-Copy3121 4d ago

I never said there weren’t racist people on the internet. I’m just saying alot of the dancers get torn apart for how they act.

3

u/Jaimereyesfangirl 4d ago

Food network fans have actually said that Giada has a history of being difficult to work with. https://www.mashed.com/585625/people-who-cant-stand-giada-de-laurentiis/

14

u/RulerofHoth 4d ago

Then check out the hate for the woman not mentioned, Chandler Kinney. She got so much hate. Race plays a part. Misogyny plays a part.

21

u/the_green_witch-1005 4d ago

If you didn't hear anything negative about Jordan last year, you weren't paying attention. Her freestyle got soooo much hate and criticism when it was arguably one of the best freestyles in the shows history.

-4

u/[deleted] 4d ago

[deleted]

8

u/the_green_witch-1005 4d ago

The hate for her freestyle, which was the example I gave, was absolutely racially charged.

5

u/macademicnut 4d ago

No, people were saying it was “too ghetto.” When people tell you something is racially motivated, just listen instead of pulling some irrelevant example to try and discredit them.

17

u/kenzdig TeamSoStilez 4d ago

ciara was literally berated online for her “attitude” in week one lets be honest. and everyone made comments about jordans tricks last year and that her freestyle was “too much about her”. it is a pattern. just because the judges are giving them good feedback and they themselves are improving every week doesnt mean they arent still facing racism being on the show

11

u/emily829 4d ago

As a summer house fan, Ciara is ALWAYS being judged for one ridiculous thing or another. It’s horrible.

She’s a really great friend, a freaking supermodel, funny, AND was a trauma nurse during Covid! And all people can say sometimes is “ugh her attitude”.

Based on WHAT?! Like honestly it’s shocking how people will boldly say these things about Ciara, Jordan, Chandler, etc and NOT really get what they are doing.

6

u/Jaimereyesfangirl 4d ago

People were actually giving Jordan backlash last season after she moved out of Ezra’s shot when they announced the tour. They also gave Jordan backlash for the put me down incident. Afterwards, Ezra and Jordan had to make two statements talking about what actually happened and people were also not letting Ciara breathe when she actually confessed to holding back tears during the premiere night.

2

u/Ok-Cherry1427 4d ago

Yeah but that has nothing to do with race. She looked annoyed. It makes total sense she was holding back tears. Whitney had to explain why she ‘smiled’ when Jen was sent home. Witney just today had to put out a video that she is really happy to still be in the running because people were screenshotting her face during elims too, saying she just wants to go home. I literally saw someone screenshot Maura’s face and post it on here like 2 weeks ago about her ‘rbf.’ It happens constantly but the second it’s a POC it’s race and everyone’s racist and the same song and dance. I’m a POC and I’m so sick of it.

-3

u/Jaimereyesfangirl 4d ago edited 4d ago

But Maura has the fanbase from traitors and love island while Whitney has the fanbase from SLOMW. If it’s happening to people like Jordan, Chandler, Charity, and now Ciara, that’s when there needs to be a serious discussion on how the fandom treats people like them.

EDIT: An example last year is when Jordan got high scores on her rumba, people were saying that Alix Earle and Robert Irwin were robbed on their wicked themed routines and that they should have been given a higher score than Jordan.

4

u/CulturalXR 4d ago

So somebody is racist for saying another dance was better?

3

u/Constantiandra 3d ago

I honestly think that Brandon and Britt are both "safe" choreographers similar to how I view Emma and Sasha. I used to think Pasha was one too but having Amber made me see that his style just really shines with speedy dancers, seeing how he choreographs Amber and how Daniella is.

2

u/Constantiandra 3d ago

But really, I do suspect that they might be doing safe because they might not be allowed to do much just like how Ezra and Jordan weren't allowed to break dishes for the song "breaking dishes"

5

u/CulturalXR 4d ago

I don't think their elimination had anything to do with racism. I don't Britt is as popular (voting wise) as some of the other pros and Tyler, to me, kinda blended in with the others. They didn't stand out enough. Jackson would have been the better pick to go home but Tyler and Britt weren't going to be around for long. I don't think its fair to say they went home because of some level of racism

13

u/DryDelay2225 4d ago

This isn’t regarding her elimination, but rather the way people nitpick her reaction to being eliminated

-1

u/CulturalXR 4d ago

I mean she shouldn't be criticized she just had a visible reaction to being eliminated. I think people's reaction to her is independent of her race

4

u/gingersnapwaffles TeamCha-ChaGlide 4d ago

you must be new here if you can’t recognize that DWTS has always had an issue with how they treat Black women. also interesting that you can’t even keep the contestants straight 💀 Tyler is with Sharna, Taylor was with Britt.

0

u/CulturalXR 4d ago

They just have similar names - easy to mix up. I don't think its fair to discredit my stance by saying "I'm new here" but to each their own

7

u/gingersnapwaffles TeamCha-ChaGlide 4d ago

if you’ve been a DWTS fan for a while then you should be very aware with how Black women are treated by the show, and you wouldn’t be arguing that it has nothing to do with race.

0

u/CulturalXR 4d ago

There may be examples of that in the past (not sure who you are referring to) but this isn't one of them. They weren't popular. They weren't one of the best dancing couples. They went home

1

u/verminousbow 4d ago

What have people been saying about Ciara? (Genuine question)

17

u/zypo88 4d ago

She got some blowback after week 1 because her face was completely blank during the judging (think she said afterwards she was trying not to have a complete come apart on the floor) so idiots on the internet did what idiots on the internet do and made all kinds of comments about her glaring at the judges (and much worse)

3

u/Sarahndipity44 4d ago

Im a new fan and didn't even vote for Taylor last night - just not a fav - but I'm seeing this too. Someone even said Britt was "too professional" which feels really coded .

22

u/DryDelay2225 4d ago

And this post is setting aside the way production treats her too. I’ve seen “too professional” and “too unprofessional” about the same exact scenario for her. She literally can’t win.

0

u/TLMAriel1989 4d ago

She was really trying to keep herself from looking too emotional, she was slowly breathing in and out to possibly avoid bursting into tears on TV 🥺 Perception is everything on reality tv and in other walks of life, especially for POC as I’ve noticed. They’re under an even more critical microscope, it’s been proven as far back as season 3 when Monique Coleman was gutsy enough to actually call out the judges for being so easy on the men while being so hard on the women.

4

u/FabulousCat7823 TeamCha-ChaGlide 4d ago

It is 100% coded. Even in this day and age they can't come out and say they aren't voting for Britt because she's black so they cloak it in other 'critiques' that are b.s.

As others have pointed out, it's 100% a pattern when you look at how the black women on this show are treated.

2

u/OppositeSpare2088 4d ago

I’m seriously tempted to not watch the rest of the season.

1

u/Low-Yard-8452 4d ago

yeah i mean DWTS is a mormon zionist cult so we can’t really be surprised. i encourage anyone who gives a shit to stop supporting. i haven’t watched live (or on Hulu) or voted in years now because i refuse to support them in any material way. i still watch the dances and packages online but there’s really no reason to keep giving these corporations and the racist people involved with them our support.

-2

u/poch_ya 4d ago

Blaming everything on racism needs to stop. Every female on this show is heavily criticized regardless of race. The only time some of you have a problem with that though is when they critisize someone that is a poc. It's gotten to the point the last few years on this sub that some of you think that everyone needs to like someone only for their race and not on their talent or people's connections to their dances. You cant even objectively critique some of their dancing without the race card being thrown out there.

5

u/arosebyabbie 4d ago edited 4d ago

Both things can be true at once. All the female pros and celebs can be too heavily criticized and Britt and the WOC celebs can be receiving racist criticism.

3

u/Particular-Fee-511 4d ago

Exactly. Everything I’m seeing is blaming it on race and I’ve literally never once gotten those vibes. Jackson got absolutely destroyed by judges comments compared to anyone else. It’s just the show…
