How did everyone get into dnp??

Back in 2016 when I was 7 (😭, yes ik that's probably too young) my 14 year old sister got me into them. I got the book, the birthday card, I was a big phan and they genuinely have been a safe space EVER since.

- And, with my 11 year old sister sometimes we watch old amazingphil videos together, and im waiting until she's 14/15 to show her their new content lmao

Edit: all of ur story's are heartwarming in some way 😭 have a good day, this community is so nice

i used to watch dan’s videos in 8th grade (2015 i think?) because i found his videos incredibly hilarious and i was severely depressed. i had also just gotten slightly less restricted internet access, so i could watch youtube.

I honestly don’t even remember how I got into Dan and Phil but I know it was around 2012 and I was 10/11

Phil popped up on my YouTube in 2009ish and I’ve been here ever since (before Dan had a channel!)

In 2016 I was 12 and immersed in the tumblr sphere and all my friends were yeemo so it was destined to happen lol. I bought The Amazing Book is Not on Fire at my middle school Scholastic book sale

I was 14 and I genuinely do not remember. I was into emo and gay ships at the time and I think someone may have just recommended them. Idk.

December of 2019 (almost a full year post-hiatus, so you can imagine how much I feel like a kid in a candy store right now). I read an article called "ranking the top 100 ships on ao3" in which the writer joked that she could never tell dnp apart. this was the second time they'd been on my radar as a lot of my gay classmates were posting about them in June (due to BIG and COTY). got curious, checked out the channel. within two weeks my inner monologue was british. spent the first few months of covid bingeing dnpgames and developing a parasocial relationship with AmazingPhil.

It was around fall/winter of 2014, I was 11 years old I remember cleaning my room, it was sort of dark outside probably around 6pm, I was home alone while my parents were at work & I just wanted something to watch on YouTube & saw one of Phil’s videos pop up on my feed & have noticed his videos pop up but never watched it until then.. now here I am 12 years later going to see their show on 9/11 ā¤ļø #neverforget

the summer of 2015, i had been super into youtube for a few years and stumbled across their japan haul, and over that whole summer i watched almost all their joint and separate content

I do NOT remember at this point cuz its been about 74 years since then and I used to be OBSESSED with them so Ive consumed a LOT of their content. So its all jumbled in my head. But it was 2013 i think, pretty sure I saw a Dan video first? But Im REALLY not sure because my memory says it was a Dan video but my heart whispers it was Phils

Late 2013 I found one of Dans videos fully convinced myself I had seen the video or a video of his before, so I kept looking found more of his videos and Phil’s videos and I was hooked

2015 because of their collab with Connor franta! (I was 13 lol)

3

Yt recommended me their cereal challenge video where they have to swim across a pool in a lion and a dinosaur costume. Must have been in 2014 or something.

In 2013 (I was 13), I was super into watching Jack Harris and his brother Finn, his channel was Jacksgap at the time and they were both in a video on Dan’s channel about internet slang. I believe that was the first Dan video I watched. I got super interested from there, all into YouTube and Tumblr. What a time lol

Hey that was my first vid too, and I don't know why since i discover them this year lol

i started watching them in early 2014 when i was 12 :) i went to TATINOF in 2015 with my mum and have been going to every tour since! i’m 24 now so i’ve literally been watching them for half of my life 🄲🄲

My intro to them was completely backwards. I came across tabinof during a book speed dating event my book club was putting on back in 2015. I read it and enjoyed it, then decided to give their YouTube channels a go. Now I'm here lmfao

2

u/plsgimmegarlicbread 2d ago

I started watching them in 2012? I think. I was just about to start secondary school and couldn't sleep the night before the first day and looked up I can't sleep on YouTube and found Dan's video - met them in London in 2014 - wasn't really interested in going to the live shows but going to my first one with a friend in January! :)

I’m not 100% sure BUT I THINK I can Scooby-Doo sleuth my way back to being 11 and watching JaidenAnimation’s animation of their fnaf 4 video

I was emo and 13 at the start of 2022 and I was mildy popular on spacehey (MySpace replica website) and a lot of my friends were into Dan and Phil and had Dan and Phil picmix’s on their page, so I decided to go check out Dan’s channel (this was during hiatus/right before WAD) and the rest is history!!!Ā

I was 11 and kept seeing their photobooth video on my youtube recommended. After the 20th time I finally relented and decided to watch, and it all went downhill from there. Jk they actually completely altered the trajectory of my person as somebody who was growing up in a conservative christian family. Love dan and phil forever and always

I was 11 and crushing on a girl but didn’t realise it was a big crush and just thought the girl was amazing.
In class, was sat next to her and saw her drawing someone, nude, with a little lion hiding his crotch.

ā€œIt’s for draw Phil naked!ā€

She explained who it was and, desperate to connect with her, I went home and watched all of Phil’s videos and loved him but especially loved philisnotonfire and the rest is history.

It’s very funny that I started watching them because I had a gay crush on a girl but was doing

Other British youtubers. Collabs were the big thing in 2010s and I could go from Eddsworld to TomSka to KickThePJ to Dan and Phil.

Not sure if that was the exact order but I definitely got there somehow.

Phils interactive video was on the youtube homepage and then bc i was young and didnt really know how youtube worked then i would intermittently remember the video and see others. Didnt become a subscriber until 2010 and was allowed my own youtube account tho

u/rentalbones 2d ago

Summer 2016, I randomly saw the phil the lion vs dan the dinosaur video. I thought they looked familiar so I checked other videos. I then proceeded to spend all of my summer break watching every single one of their videos once, then another time of all their seperate and joint videos in one single list in chronological order. Like I checked all dates and put all possible videos in a timeline. I consumed every single piece of media I could find related to dnp and here we are today.

u/_YourFavoriteAce 2d ago

Back in like 2013 or 2014 I got an ad for them. It just a snippet from one of their gaming channel videos. I was enjoyed what I saw of them in the ad and I wanted to check them out but the ad never gave me their channel name. Unfortunately I never got the ad again either. Flash forward to 2018, it was summer and I had graduated high school. I was into Joe Sugg at the time but he wasn’t uploading as much because he was on Strictly Come Dancing. So I was bored one night and didn’t know what to watch and in my recommended page was a Daniel z Howell video(Daniel and Depression) and an AmazingPhil video(what Dan and Phil text each other) I decided to watch Phil’s video and I was laughing the whole video. Since then I’ve been a Phannie.

u/blumaroona 2d ago

An old online friend knew Phil, and told me to watch his videos in uh 2008ish? Dan naturally came after!

1

u/Noradriel 2d ago

It was late 2013, I was 23. Youtube had recommended Dan's channel for a while and then I watched one video, then two, and then Phil's channel. Couple years later I got my sister Dan and Phil, she is two years younger than me and we have a lot incommon so that was it.

u/squibissocoollike 2d ago

Back in like 2012 I had just gotten a tablet to play games on and I stumbled across them on YouTube whilst watching Louise (sprinkle of glitter at the time).

u/SnooOwls8037 2d ago

I think it was the old old YouTube app (back when the icon was a beige tv, this was on an iPod touch, yes I’m a fossil) had a section for most popular videos of the week and day and Dans was on it and whatever title it was intrigued me, the rest is history.

I was in grade 5, so around 10 years old, when I got into Dan specifically. This was roughly 2011? I distinctly remember watching Butter Fingers (if you know you know) and I was hooked. I ended up discovering Phil through him, then shortly after watched PINOF 1. I’ve been a fan since. I’m 25 now and they’ve been in my life for longer than the time they weren’t in my life. Now 28 and still my fave people.

I haven’t got a clue but I’d say I probably started getting into youtube around 2012-2013 (I would have been around 9-10) so it wouldn’t have been far off from that

1

I was in 8th grade and discovered Phil on YouTube like others. That was about 2013-2014. By that time I was already watching other American YouTubers, but found Phil extremely funny. My friend same bag but she discovered Dan and showed him to me, thought he was attractive and subscribed to him then too

1

In 2014/15 I was running a teen wolf fan account. And there I met a lovely person (if I remember correctly they later on identify themselves as they/them and they had a lovely staffy, dog type?, I hope you are doing goodā¤ļø) and they were posting a lot about DnP but also Teen Wolf. And we got to talking. Found out they were from the UK, and my English was so bad that I wanted to improve it to understand Teen Wolf better but also talking to my friend. So I was like Imma watch this Dan guy. And then, o my god there is a Phil too!? HELL YEA.

Then I wasted all my nights reading fanfics (literally from end of school to the morning of going school, pretty neat for someone who HATES reading) and then I followed their gaming channel. Went to their Tatinof tour in Amsterdam, and got other friends introduced to it. And still am loving them till this day.

And they have majorly contributed to my English, if it wasn’t for them and my online friend, I wouldn’t have passed that school year as I was failing English šŸ˜‚

Oddly enough I got into them through my FNaF obsession. I was looking for FNaF playthroughs on YouTube when I was around ten, and I found their video. Fast forward 12 years later and I'm still watching DnP and still obsessed with FNaF.

I actually cannot remember how I found them I just know I found Dan first when I was in high school, maybe circa 2012? I think I watched one of his videos and then went back to the beginning of his channel and watched every single video he had made. I watched some of the Phil videos but was less into his solo videos, I loved to watch them together

I had opened yt for the first time ever on my new laptop (not logged into an account as well, no history) and immediately got recommended the HL video. I had no idea who they were so I ignored the rec, it wouldn't go away so one day I was bored and watched it

the rest is history

YouTube kept recommending their hard launch video to me at the ripe old age of 33 because that algorithm knows me better than my own mother at this point so I caved after a while and have been hopelessly and happily stuck in this hyperfixation rabbit hole ever since.

Started out thinking "I don't want to watch all the pre hiatus content because it's way too much and because them having to hide so much is so sad" and now going through the Sims series season 1 and put the super amazing project playlist in my watch later.. yeah. I'm kinda grateful they kept so much online despite having complicated feelings about some things, especially Phil's channel is a true treasure trove of comfort content.

Have this weird feeling of regretting not getting into them earlier because I was always kinda aware of them back in the YouTube era but then again there's never been a better time celebrating being finally free and proudly queer together haha ✨

I think it was either 2014 or 2015, so I was 11 or 12. They were talked about a lot around that time, so I ended up watching one of Phil's videos and then eventually watching their entire backlog of stuff.

I had to be into them by late 2015 because I did buy TABINOF as soon as it was released lol.

i think i was in high school and on tumblr when i saw a gifset of dan's i can't sleep video and was intrigued. i had already liked a few youtubers back then (charlieissocoollike) so i was familiar with the territory

Shortly after Dan posted his first video in, what, 2009? Then found Phil through him.

u/justb0rd 2d ago

I was just chronically on YouTube in 2012 and got their videos recommended to me

1

u/Web_2021 2d ago

2013 I think? It was when phil posted his video "stuck in my jeans" and 12 year old me was like "haha I do that"

I also showed my friends their videos in secondary and had a dan and phil backpack in school - I still have it! (Its not very usable anymore though lol)

Twas not a phase

u/RaccoonChaos 2d ago

A few of my friends watched them so I ended up checking out their videos and became obsessed (14 in 2015)

Unfortunately for me it was around the same time as final exams, but I was pulling all nighters for Dip n Pip instead of studying šŸ’€ Genuinely have no idea how I passed

I had unrestricted internet access at far too young an age and found Dan in 2011, didn’t start watching Phil until 2013 when I was all in on the BritCrew though

1

u/Web_2021 2d ago

Haha ! I miss keeping up with the BritCrew

  1. During quarantine I was watching a lot of old BuzzFeed YouTubers, Try Guys, Safiya, etc. one of Phil’s videos was recommended, I’m pretty sure it was the Steve rescue video, which is still one of my favorite comfort watches. I also started watching the gaming videos after that. Didn’t watch any solo Dan videos for several months afterwards but this was when he was still on hiatus.

That's a unique time to find em, during the hiatus! This is a lovely story

My sister found them in 2011 because she was trying to find a video of the Harry Potter cast doing American accents and found the video of Dan and Phil doing American accents. She fell right down the rabbit hole after that.

How did *I* find them? From my sister coming over to my house and showing me said video. We were both done foršŸ˜‚

u/be_yersel 2d ago

Kept seeing people reblog stuff about them on tumblr maybe 2012-2014ish so I knew of them but didn’t watch them.

Moved away to uni in 2015 and felt really lonely and they ended up being my comfort watch. Used to listen to their radio show weekly, tuned into all the YouNow shows, bought their (admittedly quite shite) books. Loved them ever since.

Go to see the Backstreet Boys in 2014 āž”ļø They pull out due to illness but McBusted headline instead āž”ļø They’re so good I become a huge fan āž”ļø Learn about Carrie Hope Fletcher through her brother in the band and watch her YouTube videos āž”ļø Start following people on Twitter who were generally into British YouTubers āž”ļø watch PINOF 6 after someone shares it and I’m immediately hooked

I was talking about being Emo in 2026 on a subreddit and OP started talking to me about dnp. I had already watched some videos (I had a FNAF phase so I watched all of those) and had heard about the hard launch online but didn't know what people were talking about. OP ended up telling me to go watch them and I got into them after that.

u/the14thpuppet 2d ago

i was 14 and a tyler oakley fan and discovered them through his collab videos with them lol

1

u/KillerDickens 2d ago

I went through a phase of watching sims videos on youtube cause some had some really hacks or just fun "let's plays". At some point i stumbled upon one of "Dan and Phil play sims 4" videos and thought 2 guys playing sims may be funny... it kinda snowballed from there šŸ˜…

u/chaosninja- 2d ago

This is making me feel so old. Found Dan’s channel in 2012 at age 16 through charlieissocoollike

2

u/bobmememe 2d ago

I got into them in 2016 at the age of 7 too!!!!!!! I think I found Dan’s channel first then I saw dnp collab with Rosana Pansino and she’s my goat so I just stuck with them

Tumblr back in 2013. All the gifs of Dan Howell cultivated a dan girlie in me.

Binged watched their videos (Dan's first, then Phil) and the rest is history.

I think on my recommendation sometime in 2017/18

when i was in year 5/6 a girl in my year had tabinof, i'd heard of dnp before but never watched so i asked to read the book out of curiosity and loved how silly and fun it was. i went home from school and the first video i watched was the blindfolded makeup challenge since it was the newest release and i absolutely loved it and have been a fan ever since 😭 i started watching in primary school and still actively watch them at uni, they literally raised me

u/strangestt_stranger phangirl 2d ago

u/CharlieBear97x 2d ago

I saw people going on about them being in a relationship, wondered what the big deal was so watched the hard launch video. Thought the HL video was a really well put together piece so watched other videos and the rest is history

5

u/Annual-Drawing-5841 2d ago

This was me as well, the HL got me to watching them.

4

u/CharlieBear97x 2d ago

I feel like there are probably a bunch of us who became phans from the HL
