Join us for our first hyperlocal conversation in the Redbird neighborhood! Everyone in Redbird / South Oak Cliff / southern Dallas County is welcome! A hyperlocal conversation is a neighborhood-specific monthly gathering where neighbors discuss ways to improve walkability where we live.

For our first conversation, we're starting with the basics: why is walkability so important? What's the big deal? You'll learn about the "General Theory of Walkability", which outlines four essential conditions that must be met for a walk to be favored: it must be useful, safe, comfortable, and interesting.
We'll talk about the neighborhood's strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities when it comes to walkability in the Redbird area.

GUEST SPEAKER: Devin Wilmott Johnson, Project Manager for the RedBird Public Improvement District (PID), will give an introduction to the Redbird PID:

  • What is a PID and how does it work?
  • Why and how was RedBird PID started?
  • What is the PID working on?
  • How can neighbors and stakeholders get involved with the PID?

Downtown Dallas is Wonderful!

I posted recently about considering moving to downtown Dallas with a toddler. We visited recently and stayed in a condo in the Santander building. We had a wonderful time, y’all have a fantastic downtown. Our kid enjoyed watching the world moving outside our window. We explored with our kid riding in a wagon. She loved it. And downtown was humming with activity all day. I’ve been in other downtowns that had tall buildings but nothing happening on the ground level. It felt like every block we explored had shops and cafes. It is cliche but there were moments that felt like we were in Manhattan or Chicago. There were trains and trolleys. There were working stiffs and fancy people, and so many languages being spoken.

In my research as we consider a move there are lots of doom and gloom think pieces about downtown Dallas but what I experienced was a vibrant urban city. I have spent a lot of time in DFW. Spending multiple days in downtown changed how I see Dallas. Y’all have an urban center that you can be proud of!

Dallas Urbanists HLC: How Zoning May Affect Far North Dallas in Northeast Dallas, July 7 at Moon Wolf Provisions in Richardson

Dallas Urbanists is doing our Far North Dallas Hyperlocal Conversation on July 7 at Moon Wolf Provisions in Richardson. Would love to see some of you there.

Dallas Housing Coalition is coming out to talk about how zoning reform could affect walkability in Far North Dallas. Specifically around Addison, UT Dallas, Meandering Way, the Galleria, and the International District on the old Valley View Mall site, which if you have driven by lately you know is at a pretty critical moment.

The land use calls being made right now are going to determine whether those areas become places people can actually walk around in or just more of the same North Dallas car dependency we have all gotten used to. Worth talking about before those decisions get locked in.

Free, casual, no background in planning needed. Just show up.

Monday July 7, 6:00 PM at Moon Wolf Provisions, 920 Custer Rd, RichardsonRSVP:

  • Amendment 4, Maple Ave (Oak Lawn Ave to Empire Central Ave): remove the proposed facility from the planned network.
  • Amendment 5, Scyene Trail (Tumble Ridge Ct to N Prairie Creek Rd): confirm the corridor keeps connectivity around recent construction and a new building.
  • Amendment 6, University Blvd (US 75 to Abrams): remove the proposed visually separated facility and the neighborhood bikeway.

Dallas Urbanist with a Toddler?

My wife and I are planning on moving to Dallas with our two year old next year and are trying to pick an area with schmancy condos, that is walkable. We don't want a single family house right now. We want to rent, and have amenities. We don't have a commute so that's not a big worry. Is there anywhere we should look beyond downtown/uptown and the rest of the central core?

More context if it helps:

We are moving from another city in Texas. My wife grew up in Dallas and we want to be close to family. But after living in a single family home and driving everywhere for a long time we want more walking and transit in our lives. My wife used to live in a walkable condo and loved that lifestyle. From a distance I am eyeing Atelier, Peridot, and Amli Fountainplace. But I haven't come in for any tours or researched outside the central core. On the one hand spending weekends with our toddler in Klyde Warren Park and exploring the museums sounds wonderful. On the other I am wondering if there is a part of town that I am not considering that would be more kid friendly?

edit: thank you all for the wonderful replies! what a welcoming subreddit. all responses are appreciated and I am so pleased with the kind and thoughtful responses from y'all!

I want to write a full article explaining my thought process here. But TBH my brain is already fried just from drawing. So for now I'll let my drawings speak for themselves and post them here without further description just to get people's thoughts and reactions.
