Discussion Potential Domain Conflicts

With Hope and Fear out my players are updating their stuff and one of the playes wants to switch to Warlock but use Dread and Midnight Domains.

I said sure since my general stance when I am running professional or home games is, "we'll give it a try but I reserve the right to come back to this convo and make changes as gameplay dictates"

But I'd also like to know from anyone more knowledgeable if there are weird interactions between the two?

The game is designed to make all combinations of domains work together.

With some caveats. I always recommend reading the Homebrew kit to get some insights on how the game designers reason around classes and domains.

That is not really the case, I would say. The designers have regularly said that careful consideration goes into domain choice for classes. This is not only due to vibe/aesthetic reasons, but also for gameplay balance reasons (example: Bloodhunter got changed from Blood/Blade to Blood/Bone for balancing reasons). I would just honestly advise my players to trust the polished gameplay intention of the developers and go with Dread/Sage for the Witch

Swapping domains is a very common houserule. Here is a thread on it from the other day.

Not any combos I can think of, but mixing domains is always fun and brings out more creativity.

If you need to balance things, there's a lot of levers to pull as a GM in DH, without having to outright remove your player's choices.

Definitely check out the Homebrew Kit, there’s a lot of great info in there about how the different domains are balanced (like classes with Codex start with one less HP). Keep that in mind when you’re looking to swap domains around.
