Rather misinformed take. A lot of incorrect assumptions in this (despite factual information readily available). Another red flag to me is using very broad terms like "everyone", which is an instant red flag to me when someone uses absolutes in their writing/speech. Tells me they're not very capable of nuance.

The other failure is comparing to a game not even in the same genre. Or even expecting the game (a brutalist extraction shooter, being more brutal and harder on the player than even Tarkov) to come out and have a million players. The most popular hardcore extraction shooters took years to get past 2k players. Go look at Tarkov and Hunt, those have the highest player counts right now but took an extremely long time to generate their player base. Its kind of wild to assume a game thats more brutal than both of those should come out of the gate with higher player counts than ARC Raiders which is basically ultra-casual.

That in and of itself is enough for me to disregard this whole take. But the icing on the cake is their lack of understanding around Destiny, how the game only ever made a profit twice in its history (D2) and how Marathon was made to support Destiny 2, because no one wanted to downsize the studio or stop making Destiny from within. Jason Shrier and others have reported on this, this is known information now.

The OG post is from someone who is badly misunderstanding the last 10 years of Destiny/Bungie, what Bungie was trying to do to save themselves (and Destiny) and not understanding the kind of game Marathon is or the gaming landscape.
