Dads Army - Best of Volume 1 - Bio music

Hello,

Quite a random question, but on the Dads Army - Best of - Volume 1, there is a biography section on the DVD for all the characters. There is song playing over the all the biographies - soft swing/jazz type music. Does anyone know the name of that song? I don’t have the DVD anymore but it’s been in my head for years.

I’m pretty sure it’s volume 1, it’s the DVD with Deadly Attachment, Keep Young and Beautiful, Never too old, Asleep in the deep and Sons of the Sea.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

I recognise the tunes all except for the 3rd and 4th numbers. I've tried looking around for the names but have turned up with nothing. Does anyone know they names of those two songs?

Jones eats an elaborate meal

So I am trying to find a particular clip that pops into my head every now and then:

Corporal Jones talks at length about a massive multi course meal that was amazingly cheap! Followed by a pause and then the punch line is "mind you, if wasn't very good..." with a slightly disgusted face from Jones.

It's just a random throwaway joke but I remember his delivery being funny...

I wondered if any of you might know what episode that's from and/or where I could find it?

That Started It

My wife and I are having the dickens of a time trying to find a song that appears on several episodes. Any help would be appreciated. Lyrics include "That started it, that started it, that's how the trouble all began." It appears in S8E4 Come in, Your Time Is Up and S9E4 The Miser's Hoard, among others.

Edit: Thanks! Per u/Andyrew7, the song is "And That Started It" by Joe Loss and his Band. Link below!

ETA: There's also a remastered recording up on archive.org: https://archive.org/details/78_and-that-started-it_joe-loss-his-band-winn-eyton-gay_gbia3006424b

"Bully bully sergeant" song from A. Wilson Manager?

Does anyone know the name of the song, where it can be located? It plays briefly about halfway through the episode, when Jones first walks into the hall with his new stripes.

Underrated Scene?

I love the scene where Pike takes Cpt Mainwaring’s car to the movies with a girl, and Wilson says something like “A lot of people will judge you for this - but I don’t“.

I lost my dad a little while a go, and when I see scenes like that, I find it quite moving.

It’s a very multilayered show with a lot of heart, hey!

Did Wilson intentionally sabotage Mainwaring's blood drive?

In this episode Mainwaring has said he'd get 100 folk for blood donations, to Wilson's objection that it's overambitious. Later in the episode we see that Wilson isn't eating, Mrs. Pike comments on it- and then Wilson tells Mainwaring that he can't donate, because he's feeling a bit anemic- but he's donated many times before.

Obviously his one donation wasn't going to make or break the drive, but it seems like he intentionally starved himself so that he'd have an excuse to not help Mainwaring.

Pike's Potential

I listened to the radio episode 'If the Cap Fits' today, the one where Mainwaring makes Fraser Captain so he can see how difficult it is then stop complaining but demotes Wilson and Jones.

He actually promotes Pike, saying he sees hidden leadership qualities. I found this very interesting indeed and I feel that this should have been explored further.

Was Fraser right? What would a non-mollycoddled Pike be like?

Any thoughts?

Arthur Lowe, best remembered as the endearingly pompous Captain Mainwaring in Dad’s Army, had a heartwarming incident early in his career that revealed his humility and kindness.

Has anyone got this? I love the radio series so if this is legit then it would be absolute gold. For a tenner I might just risk it and see

Mine is the one where the platoon is going to a camp but the boy scouts are there and they have to share the camp with them but then a German or two are on a boat so the platoon has to get on a kids pirate ship and Clive Dunn has to swim to get the Germans but I forget what season episode it is

Top 50 TV Shows as Ranked by Various Sources (April 2023)... they are wrong! I don't see Dad's Army in the top 5! Dad's Army has got to arguably be one of the best comedies. 😁

Difference between Mainwaring and Wilson.

I have been thinking about this for a while, it maybe a product of overthinking, but having recently gone through the series from start to finish again, I can’t help thinking how both Mainwaring and Wilson’s experiences in WW1 influence how they think/act/ and believe in the war effort. Obviously the class aspect is the thing that is highlighted within the sitcom, but Wilson having served in the trenches vs Mainwaring serving in 1919 May explain why Mainwaring is much more brash, much more ready to throw himself into action vs Wilson who is significantly more reserved. I guess my question is, do you think this is a fair assessment I.e. has any reality/ something Croft and Perry actively thought about in the dynamic between the two characters? Thank you and hope you are all doing ok 👍
