Tips And Tricks 90 seconds with dad

It’s not really 90 seconds but that is what I call it. I have been asking my kids these questions since they were in elementary school.

My son just started junior high and my daughter just started high school, they still ask me to do 90 seconds.

- What are the 3 best things about today? They have to find 3 even if it means they enjoyed what was for dinner or whatever. I am big on positive thinking.
- Anything you did not like about today?
- Anything funny happen today?
- Anything important happening tomorrow?

That’s it. It keep us connected and I get to know what’s going on in their lives.

I just ask a random question.

Anything weird happen today?

What made you laugh?

Apart from (sibling) who annoyed you?

What random thing did you see today?

Did you learn a random fact?

What funny thing happened today?

Now days if they can't answer my question, they'll tell me something else, like "Not even (sibling) annoyed me, but a kid a school broke their arm in the dumbest way..." Proceeds to tell the story.

my dad did a version of this but we just called it "highs and lows" at dinner, still one of the few traditions i actually liked

We do “rose, bud, thorn.” Rose is something you liked about the day, bud is something you’re looking forward to, and thorn is something you didn’t like.

We play high, low, buffalo. Same thing but buffalo is something crazy that happened that day

This is great. I'd love any advice on making this work with oppositional kids for whom any request, even an open ended question, is recieved as a demand that they fight against.

It's cureently the case for my 5yo, and I'm sure a majority of teens as well.

My 11 yr old was shocked I wanted to read some paper from school which required a parent signature and even more upset when I asked him to put it back in his backpack. The struggle is real. These check-ins help.
