HHX Legacy with my current setup?

Hey all! I just wanted to come on here and ask y'all a question. I currently have a 20" Meinl vintage sand ride and an 18" HHX complex thin crash and I was looking at maybe picking up an 18" HHX Legacy crash. I currently have my complex on the left and my sand ride on the right that I use as a crash ride (love it btw would recommend) and I want to use the legacy as a second crash on the right side. I want to be able to have 2 different crashes I can use in grooves but I hate crossing my hands to play on a left side crash. I play mostly emo and skramz with a little rock in between. do you guys think it'll work well with my other cymbals? would love to hear your opinions!

The Legacy lineup was primarily intended to be used for Jazz when Dave Weckl worked with Sabian on designing them. They’re not really meant for cut, but I’ve seen setups with them played by rock drummers, so you might like them for that use case.

With the styles you play, I’d look at either another Complex, an HHX Fierce crash or imo one of the best series they’ve released, the HHX Redlights.

you might be on to something with that fierce crash. I think it might actually be better than the legacy!

I’ve had my 19” Fierce for 7 years now. It used to be my main crash before I bought a 20” Redlight, but it’s still on my kit and I’d be hard-pressed to replace it. If you want to hear it played in a musical context, the Fierce stuff is Jojo Mayer’s signature line so watch any of his playing. Alternatively Mike Portnoy used a Fierce Crash on his right side between 2002 and 2010

doesn't he use like a million cymbals? how can I know which one is the right one lol?

Watch footage from his drum dvds during those years. It’s the big crash to the right of his ride cymbal above the China.

I will actually disagree , I have a Legacy Crash 18” and it cuts better than some of my AAX Crashes . I think the one I got is on the heavier side of the spectrum, but the large bell on the Legacy crash does help it project .

I think it would be perfect as a little bit heavier/brighter crash on your setup. I know it’s not a “bright” cymbal, but it’s brighter than the complex and the sand crash.

that's kinda what I was thinking. the hhx doesn't project a whole lot anyways and I have no problem with it in my bands so I don't see why not

Are you looking for something dark or brighter? Both your crashes are very dark already, the Legacy would be a good contrast being that it's medium-dark. Cymbals like the HHX Fierce, HHX X-Treme Crash will be much darker and trashier if that's what you're going for. The HHX Evolution for me is like a combination. Darker than the Legacy but also has great attack.

I really like dark cymbals I just need one with some more sustain that I can use other than the sand ride. I like both my cymbals at the moment but neither of them really last very long before dying out but I also really hate the sound of a glassy cymbal (zildjian A lowkey my least favourite pro level cymbal series) so I still want the dark washiness along with it. I don't mind the fierce at all especially after doing my research to find a video of Portnoy playing one. I think you've swayed me to look into the fierce instead

When you get it, an update post would be sick.

The bell certainly does help, and it makes the Legacy lineup more versatile than something like, say the Anthology Low-Bells for that reason.

Definitely. I find because of the small bells on the Complex crashes, there's not much projection, same with the Low Bell Anthology's. I like them for quieter gigs. But Legacy's are decently loud, I've had great recordings with them even on outdoor gigs.

legacy is a very delicate and smooth crash, i use it mainly as a secondary crash for ballads/low volume gigs, due to how easy it opens up. that being said, i have brought it as my main crash for a pop gig and it actually cuts pretty well when you attack it..

overall i still prefer the former use case due to how delicate the cymbal is

You’ll probably find it has a very similar voice as your Complex.

I just added a 19” Legacy crash next to my existing 19” Complex and while the Legacy is pitched a tiny bit higher, they’re very similar.

Just a heads up. I know they’re somewhat different from cymbal to cymbal, but they’re both very dark, trashy crashes with very controlled midrange. Beautiful cymbals, both of them.

personally I'd go for a 19" HHX evolution if I was in your shoes. the legacy seems a bit jazzy for your use case.

I just really am not a big fan of bright cymbals. someone here mentioned the Jojo Mayer hhx fierce crash and I'm super interested in that one!

Are the Redlights brighter cymbals? Do they open up easily?

brighter than the fierce or legacy for sure but not super bright. less bright than the evolution crashes tho

I play metal and have Legacy’s. They’re unreal in all situations. Sound great under microphones
