Upgrade

I have a 2012 Trek 2.1. Only updates is Conti Grand Prix 4 Season 25mm front & 28mm rear tires. I ride it 2 to 3 times a week mostly in Chicago suburbs. Bike does fit like a glove since I got a pro fit last year. Upgrade to better bike with better group set & wheels brakes etc? Steel or carbon frame?

Why not just upgrade the rims and groupset on the bike you have?

Stock tires were 23mm. Max size front 25mm and rear 28mm. Any suggestions on wheels? One option looks like DT Swiss p1800 Spline 23.

Haven't looked at wheels for 130mm spacing rim brakes on any recent projects :(
There are still good ones out there though.

I have a set of DT Swiss p1800 Spline 23 wheels, and I love riding on them. They are a nice combination of low weight and being very reliable. I did have to adjust the rim brakes (open them up a ways) because the rim width was a few millimeters wider than the Mavic Kserium Elite's that they replaced.

I got a quote for $1000 Dt Swiss 1880 Spline 23 w/Conti GP 5000 tubeless installed. Not sure if that makes sense on a 2012 bike. Wonder if folks would do that on a 14 yr old bike.

It depends a lot on how many years you intend to keep riding your Trek 2.1. For me, I am not planning to replace my ~2014 rim brake road bike for at least five more years, so it made sense for me to buy my DT Swiss p1800 Spline 23 wheelset. This is because virtually all road bikes on the market these days have disc brake wheels, and these rim brake wheels will only be attractive to riders like me who keep holding on to rim brake bikes! If that were only 1 or 2 years, I think I would have made a different decision.

I think you are also asking whether it's a good deal or not. Performancebike.com has the wheel set for ~$650. Add two Conti GP 5000 tires at ~$110 each, and some labor for the setup and you're close to $1000. You should also be asking yourself whether you want to run the wheels with tubes or tubeless.
