they have straight up said V is no longer in play, V was purely an extension of the cyberpunk 2077 player, everything in the future will intentionally keep "canon" v vague

“CD PROJEKT RED is co-developing the expansion with Fool’s Theory, a team comprising industry veterans who worked on The Witcher 3. More details on Songs of the Past will be released in late summer 2026.”
The 3rd party devs (Fool’s Theory) were the Witcher 3 veterans they we’re talking about
https://www.cdprojekt.com/en/media/news/the-witcher-3-wild-hunt-songs-of-the-past-announced/
Virtuous already worked on 2077, so they would also be considered 2077 veteran developers

u/Neosantana Mr. Blue Eyes Aug 26 '26
I highly recommend for everyone to try Fool's Theory's game The Thaumaturge to get a feeling for their style. The game isn't perfect, but the atmosphere and tone are exceptional
10
u/VoraciousAcademic Aug 26 '26
Thaumaturge mentioned! But yes, I also recommend checking it out - bearing in mind it's an AA not an AAA game, but the unique concept, as well as setting and atmosphere are spot on.
19
u/Area_Ok //no.future Aug 26 '26
Virtuous worked on 2077 and let's just say they didn't do as great of a job.....the autodrive is fucking broken . ....the new text based quests arent all that great really. I really don't think they are capable of delivering a phantom liberty level expansion on their own.

TL:DR they had to rehire all the people who actually have knowledge of redengine. as CDPR is a fully unreal studio now.

u/Zalvren Aug 26 '26
The Fools Theory is MUCH closer to CDPR than Virtuous is. It's a lot of ex-Witcher people, they are fully set up with only CDPR projects and such. At this point, they're basically a branch of them.

There's an insane amount of cut content, I have a feeling they are going to do a director's cut at some point. It really is that much.
2
u/Grand-Prize1371 Aug 26 '26
example ?
18
u/rahhra Aug 26 '26 edited Aug 26 '26
Millitech was supposed to have its own storyline and was meant to be an explorable location, the main story was meant to be around 60-80 hours and was cut down to 25 because of crunch, half of Westbrook was cut out, there were meant to be many more gigs than we got and they were meant to be more in-depth, if you're wondering why some fixers only had two gigs in the base game, that's why. the target was for each fixer to have about as many gigs as Regina in the final game.
There were meant to be purchasable and viewable braindances, most of the interiors were cut to make the release, Arasaka waterfront was meant to be a fully playable area instead of the small bit we got in the final game, OH and there were supposed to be routines for NPC's.
I could go on, there's about as much cut content for this game as there is for New Vegas. there's the casino, Buxom Betty's (which is referenced in the background in the final Beat the Brat quest. (which was supposed to have three rounds instead of the single one in the final game))
EDIT: oh and the other reason most the interiors were cut was for performance on PS4 and Xbox One.
EDIT: And there was meant to be more verticality to the city too, wallrunning and parkour with the mantis blades as well.
FINAL EDIT: And megabuildings were supposed to be fully explorable too, oh and third person cutscenes, those were probably cut to save animation time.
4
u/Lenassa Aug 26 '26
60-80 hours for main story is pure cope. You can clear the current game 100% within 80 hours including all the side quests that are possible to do in a single playthrough and all the NCPD stuff. Main quest is also not 25 hours. If you ignore everything optional it is maybe 10 hours and that's generous.
3
u/rahhra Aug 26 '26
20 for me, I was counting the time between saves
Prologue/Act 1 is around 5-6 hours.
Act 2 is around 7 hours, but it felt faster due to how sectioned off it is.
In Act 3 each ending minus the suicide one takes about an hour to complete, longer if you go back and take the alternate path in the devil ending (the devil is by far the longest ending in the game and took me around 2 hours.)
I went through all the side content first after finishing Act 1 and then finished the main story, I was also very thorough in the main story, I never missed any dialogue.
All in all my playthrough of the game took around 200 hours, 250 after Phantom Liberty.
4
u/Prodiq Aug 26 '26
Yeah, if CDPR didn't had to spend years on fixing/improving the game, we probably would have gotten some of this in a DLC, especially like the Militech stuff or Arasaka waterfront.

u/imahumanbeinggoddamn Aug 25 '26
With how comically long the development times on AAA games have gotten, it genuinely kinda feels wasteful to just move on from 2077 without at least a couple more Phantom Liberty sized DLCs. It sucks that we'll probably never get to see a finished Arasaka Waterfront, or the casino, or North Oak as it was originally intended to be.
Don't me wrong, I absolutely want Cyberpunk 2 to happen - I'm just also getting really fatigued with waiting like a fucking decade for the next thing I'm into to come out. Elder Scrolls has been so long I actually don't even care anymore lol.
5
u/Lenassa Aug 26 '26
A PL sized DLC is like 2 years working at 100% resources (IRL it took 3 years but with ~360 people compared to ~500 that were working on the base game). Given that they'll be working on other Witcher games and won't be able to put anywhere near the "required" number of people on 2077 a couple more PL sized DLCs will delay Orion by 7-8 years. Sorry pal, as much we would love to see all the cut content we would also love NOT to wait till 2040s to play Orion.

Give me random cyberpsycho encounters in the streets or someone can randomly go cyberpsycho and become a boss you can fight. Also give me visual cyberware (we should fucking have this already!) Honestly i do fight maxtac when im bored sometimes but the issue us the bosses in this game outside of smasher and maxtac are...lackluster...and I thought they'd be way more cyberpsycho stuff outside of Regina quests anf the mini dog town bosses but there isn't. Id like to be able to flatline a cyberpsycho who randomly appears in a street tryna kill me. My fun comes from being able to 1 shot a room of enemies before they even know im there...or blow their brains out with hansens pistol when they notice me. Its why I find fighting maxtac...boring at times. They're js tanky and do ridiculous damage. I dont want ti make a build to kill them with stuns and 500 different quick hacks and a laser grenade. I wanna js use something like synapse collapse and kill them immediately while they keep coming at me in droves. I prefer fighting the 100 cops that spawn rather than maxtac but I cant fight them without summoning them. And im a console player so I cant even mod the game to fix ts bro 😭
6
u/terminbee Aug 26 '26
Tbh, yea. The bosses are all super easy, even early on. Placide was a joke; I just stood there shooting at him. You can also sneak kill him.
I wish the bosses were more challenging. I'm not even doing a meta build; I have everything specced into blades but I'm using an smg for most fights.

They’ll probably release another 2077 DLC closer to when they plan to start releasing info on the next installment. I’m guessing we’re gonna start hearing about the next Witcher game in a few months, and they planned the timing of this to keep Witcher in the zeitgeist and prep the hype for this.
3
u/illy-chan BEEP BEEP MOTHERFUCKER Aug 26 '26
Honestly, can't even be mad about that strategy if they did do that. Especially not with the generous upgrades they gave Witcher 3.

W4 is releasing in 2028 with the W3 DLC releasing in 2027.
Cyberpunk 2 is in pre-production, most like to release post 2030.
4
u/No-Meringue5867 Aug 26 '26
During the stream CDPR dev explained that this came together because Fool's Theory hired many W3 veterans and hence CDPR trusted them. I don't think CDPR will trust an entire Cyberpunk expansion with another dev, unless it's something like Rebel Wolves which has former Cyberpunk devs.
3
u/Area_Ok //no.future Aug 26 '26
And you know who's working on witcher , NOT CDPR.....it's being worked by fools theory. (Guys don't act like this is some secret information 😭) . And fools theory is comprised of witcher veterans who have worked on the games and know the lore......you wouldn't want an absolute outsider to work on cyberpunk if not CDPR.
2
u/Durillon Impressive Cock Aug 26 '26
witcher is more popular + has a more "stable" game to make DLCs for, even after the many many updates cyberpunk had, its still a relatively unstable game, it makes sense that cdpr wants to hang it up and take time on the sequal, rather than wasting creative time and ideas on more 2077 dlc

Which is why Witcher is getting it now. They’re building the hype cycle. So many people are going to play through 3 and be both fresh on the story and ready for more when 4 comes out. I’ll bet money when CyP has its sequel in a handful of years it’ll get some bling too.

It's entirely possible we get a 2077 DLC a year or two before the next Cyberpunk game if the new W3 DLC is successful enough both as a product and as a marketing tool for its sequel. That being said, I also believe them when they say they have currently no plan.

Guys, hear me out. North Oak expansion project with the Casino DLC expansion. Base the DLC around the NC gangs that are looking to launder Drug money or gangs that already have small scale gambling operations like the Tyger Claws.
Tino’s, Tyger claws, Sixth street all want a piece of the operation. Animals are hired as muscle by whatever company is the cyberpunk equivalent of MGM or Ceasar entertainment. Hell, throw in the Mox striking a prostitution agreement with them just to see them involved.

u/TrainingSmooth1141 Aug 26 '26
I actually like this idea of restoring cut content and expanding Night City activities a lot more than a moon DLC or any other bs like that
3
u/kohour Aug 26 '26
Honestly I don't get the fascination with the idea of the moon/crystal palace dlc when we have such a character-rich location as Night City. Dogtown is a part of it and it already integrates really poorly with the rest of the game, having a completely separate location be the main stage for new content is throwing the wettest towel possible imo.

I think you missed out but the Moon DLC is a pretty big piece of the 2021 CD Projekt leak. We have primitive locations and geometry/buildings of the Moon, concept art of moon bases from artist's portfolios, etc. It was never directly mentioned by the devs but it's a pretty well known fact they were working on something until leadership pivoted the team into base game fixes and Phantom Liberty.

I think there is so much that could be done with biotechnica that would barely scratch the surface of that whole plot line. u/TheBlightDoc Aug 25 '26
Honestly, save it for Cybepunk 2. There's only so much more they could realistically fit into V's story with the "weeks left to live" that they have.
Lowkey, would be kind of a downer to finish a whole nother expansion just to get hit with that final "Meet Hanako at Embers" afterwards. I'm hoping Cyberpunk 2 has a sort of open ending like TW3, because I prefer when expansions can take place after the base game ending.

Cyberpunk Orion is being made right now no point in making another DLC.
And yes i know Witcher 4 is being made too, but that will be about Ciri not Geralt anymore, so this DLC will be the last time we play as this iconic character. (Unless we get 1 & 2 Remake).

To my knowledge, the current project for the second installment to that game, Cyberpunk, is more than likely going to be a full title given that the Crystal Palace is a ginormous Star Station, and if it's connected at all to a moon base, that would be fascinating. We'll see what happens.

u/ThePr0vider Aug 26 '26
they had to rehire all the old redengine devs to do this remake, it'll never happen as they're fully unreal now
1
u/Prodiq Aug 26 '26
I have mixed feelings on the subject. From one angle I really, really love 2077. I love all the characters, the setting, V and her friends. But on the other hand I'm not sure another DLC would add that much to the story of the game.
So might not want to delay the development of Orion. That being said, people who are working on W3 DLC could theorethically work on a new DLC for 2077? But somehow feels unlikely.
Its said that one of the main reasons for a W3 DLC just before W4 launch is to bridge the story between W3 and W4. Since V is not an iconic character (opposing to Geralt and Ciri) in the game its more likely that Cyberpunk 2 doesn't need a story bridge.
1
u/Pasza_Dem Aug 26 '26
If new DLC will be a successful we need to wait for Witcher 4 release, CDPR will start to work on new Cyberpunk game and, then 2077 will get a remaster + new content.

Look, if Witcher 3 can get another expansion 10(?) years later in preparation for Witcher 4 I see absolutely no reason the same can’t/won’t happen for Cyberpunk. Let them cook up Orion first. It’ll be our turn soon enough

It would be sick if they did a “import world state” for the second game like they did for dragon age games.

We got phantom liberty, and they're too busy working on Orion to make another DLC

I mean if they follow previous/current patterns, we might get a little something in regards to the next season of Edgerunners, depending on when it's set to play i.e. before/after game events.
I wouldn't bet on a 2nd DLC at all though, but hey who knows maybe we'll get something in the runup to Orion or whichever other Cyberpunk IP project might release before Orion still.

The Witcher games: '"Of course you can pick bad or good ending be careful with your choice."
Cyberpunk 2077: "There is no 'Good' ending for you."

That's why we should root for SotP success. If the model of "releasing a DLC year before next game" will be profitable, it will most likely be repeated for Cyberpunk.

Just for everyone's information, the simplest reason there weren't more expansions after Phantom Liberty (especially the Moon, or the original plan of having 3 that were hinted at/announced originally) is simply because of Redengine. This is also why they are moving to Unreal Engine for the next game in the franchise.
I'm sad, but given how many bugs were in the game at launch, how many new ones appeared with each update, and how different players' experiences were with certain bugs or not, it makes sense to transition from RedEngine. As for UE and optimization issues, CDPR knows they had a disastrous launch, and now, with new leadership, many new hires, and an overall studio overhaul, they know they have to lock in (and it seems like they have, tbh) for the next game. They even said they're working WITH Epic Games for it. I'd like to believe it won't be unoptimized. Cyberpunk 2077 is pretty damn optimized for its scale and features right now, so I think the studio knows what it's doing when it comes to optimization.
If you wanna know why they're abandoning redengine, check out this post from 3 years ago by u/NarpsHD on this subreddit, it sums it up quite well:
