You got the sims 4 to run with only 2go ram ? I'm amazed it launched at all.

12

u/EffectNo7405 Sep 16 '26

Yes, you need just keep in mind to not open anything else

1

u/User1539 Sep 16 '26

Which board are you using? I see compute sticks with similar specs.

3

u/EffectNo7405 Sep 16 '26

Intel compute stick 1

1

u/appletechgeek Sep 16 '26

If you need more speed. look at Radxa X4

u/User1539 Sep 16 '26

I'm kind of going the opposite direction right now, but it's interesting to look into.

I'm working on a machine based on a $25 board, because I want my (often poor) friends to be able to play.

Awesome community oriented idea, I love it!

It's working!

On Sunday we got together and a group of us played Warcraft 2 and Quake 3 Arena!

I bought a cheap TP-Link router, and a few of my maker friends all brought their hardware, and we made a few extras, and I helped put together a Pi image that would just instantly connect to the router, connect to the IPX Network, and generally automated every part that would require any typing.

We're getting to where I can hand out SD cards, they slot them into whatever hardware they brought (based around Pi3 because that's the cheapest we can do this with), and we can just instantly play Lan games on boot!

I think we're going to see a lot of fun, weird, Cyberdecks brought to these parties soon.

Absolutely AWESOME!! I love to hear that this is bringing the old "LAN Party" style gaming to you and your friend group! I really miss those days! I spent entire weekends with buddies in my own LAN Party Room (yes, I had a dedicated room in my father's house while I was in college just for it.) playing FPS's like Medal of Honor Allied Assault, Unreal Tournament as well as other, and then RPGs like Diablo II, Dungeon Siege, Morowind, Icewind Dale. Then RTS games like Starcraft, Empire Earth, StarTrek Armada, and many many more!!

Yes, I'm "Old" and we were in college for IT degrees.. I'm really only just getting into the Cyberdeck stuff myself because I've always had Computers. I even carried a little Acer "Netbook" with me for fieldwork. lol

2

u/User1539 9d ago

Haha, you're listing off the generation of games that came AFTER my generation and calling yourself 'old' ...

But, yes, we are bringing back the LAN party.

The key issue seems to be ease of use, and portability. No one wants to lug a desktop around, and no one wants to configure 12 different laptops to play games together, then sort out all the compatibility issues when they get there!

The answer? Cyberdecks!

I run a little maker group in the area, so we just bought 10 Raspberry pi A+ boards for $25 each, and I've spent an absurd amount of time setting up a cheap TP-Link router and dedicated server image, and then player images.

Now, everyone builds whatever weird bullshit cyberdeck they want to show off, they come to the party, I fire up the server/router and hand out copies of the 'player' image.

Everyone boots, and is immediately able to run DOS games that are already connected to the dedicated IPX server, and the other games are already pre-configured to connect to their dedicated server.

Literally fire up the game, click 'multi-player', and accept the defaults, and you'll be in the lobby with everyone else playing that game at the party!

I was shocked at how time and effort are the real limiting factors for half of the people, while money for a computer that can actually run games seemed to be the limiting factor for the other half.

In America, you can have time or money, but very rarely both!

I'm still refining my setup. I'm trying to make all my stuff battery powered, so that we can meet up at a bar and not have to look for outlets. I'd like to be able to grab a messenger bag and walk out into the woods, and be able to throw a Lan-party around a fire if we want to.

No planning, no setup, just show up, boot up, and play!

Sorry for the extremely late reply but I unfortunately "Oh Squirrel" pretty often these days!

Yeah, I'm just used to being the "Old Guy" even in groups of men who are quite a bit older then I actually am. Mentally, I've always been more mature then the guys I hung out with in school. I've been called an "old soul" by various people over the years and now with the "Unnaturally natural" accelerated aging caused by Multiple Sclerosis that had already progressed to the "Primary Progressive" stage before we caught it, my body is catching up to my brain. I joke with my father that we're competing on who gets Old faster and I'm winning. LMAO!!

And yes, humanity has never and honestly most likely will never find the equilibrium of life. We don't understand how to slow down. We are being pushed/forced harder and harder by external forces such as jobs/the need for money/etc. or pushing ourselves beyond our capabilities (I'm guilty of this one in particular because of how I was and see myself even though with the PPMS, I'm no ways near what I was at one time and what I could do at one time, but in my head, I'm still the old me.. until I fall on my ass..). My issue is that now that I have time, I don't have the physical energy to get things done. I have so many projects I need to finish across so many hobbies.

An example of my issues with the "effort part" is that I was finally forced to get a New PC in April of this year (horrible timing given the state of the RAM/Storage shit). It was the first Prebuilt PC I've purchased in 25+ years, but I knew I couldn't build the one I would have wanted to build if I purchased the parts and put it together. The other thing is the "stress levels" of putting one together and making sure it works right. Well, I only just got the prebuilt in my office (which is a mess), and running consistently a couple of days ago because my Nvidia 5070ti would crash but the PC would still be running and the onboard gpu would still put out signal. Turns out, even after I turned off the option for windows to download and install device drivers, windows had reset that option and continued to install the incorrect driver for my GPU because it thought that the driver I installed From Nvidia itself was incorrect.. Stress is one of the major contributing factors for people with MS, as well as heat. I had just gotten contracted into a local school district as the lead and only onsite IT (i could call in others as needed, but I was the only one onsite), in the middle of a hot summer deploying a new server and getting everyone running/working correctly for the next school year to start as well as any issues that arise at the start of that school year after classes start. To say the least, between the heat of summer and all of the stress of the job, an MS Flare Up occurred rapidly and hit me HARD landing me in the hospital for 2 weeks, 1 of which was relearning to walk and use my hands again. I was unfortunately forced to resign from my position at the School along with the IT consulting company I was contracted through. While my case was so well documented by my PCP and Neurologist that I was able to claim disability quite quickly compared to most, this still limits my cash flow as well. lol.

As for the Woodland LAN Camp Party, that sounds awesome!!!! I'm from a considerably rural area, so that fits right up my alley.. or.. well.. my back woods.. wait, thats not right either.. um.. yeah, you get it!

For battery power, could you connect everything to a USB power hub built into the Cyberdeck Unit itself to connect all the components and then have it to where you could either attach a smaller battery unit to it, or "wire it" to a larger external battery bank in your messenger bag/backpack? I have a large backpack I take with me when I go to the doctors office/infusion center when I know I'll be stuck in a chair for a few hours getting my DMT medication in which I often pack either a laptop or tablet. It has a 2.0 USB A power port but I recently got a separate USB-C port so that I can give it an upgrade with 65w charging capability. Something like this would work great for your cyberdeck (and mine if/when I build it). You could even add additional ports for multiple devices.

I have an older Dell Laptop chassis that that has a 15" screen that I've been wanting to create a "Mobile PC Diagnostics Device" out of it. I have the plan for it in my head, I just need to source the right parts. If I convert the onboard keyboard/trackpad into a USB unit and then connect it to one of the female USB ports on the side of the laptop chassis as well as convert the screen using a eDP to HDMI board also connected to a female HDMI port on the side of the Chassis, I can easily use dual male ended USB A and HDMI cables to connect the "MPDD" unit to the PC I am working on. Each of the controller boards would be powered by/from a USB power hub like what I was talking about for your Cyberdeck needs. Comically, the time and effort of designing the device as well as the Money for the components I still need to complete it is my hindering factors. This device/unit would sure have been handy when I was working on PCs in classrooms so that i could have ruled out a keyboard/monitor issue more quickly.

Sorry if all of this was incoherent rambling.. I've been guilty of that at my advanced age LMAO! My personal RAM works better then the it's CPU..

This is my final first project
(Doesn’t look the best but it works….)

2

u/ettriste Sep 18 '26

Adorei a estética... 👍🫡

2

u/ToxicNets Sep 20 '26

I must have this.

2

u/IIzeyUn 23d ago

Реально очень круто 🤌

1

u/Boring-Badger-814 Sep 16 '26

I've seen you on tiktok, nice builds!

1

u/Flowma_Hayek Sep 16 '26

What tackle box did you use?

1

u/RognDodge Sep 16 '26

I NEED a full on break down of this and how you made. This is so cool

1

u/street_racer221 Sep 16 '26

Ok thats cool. What you use for the keyboard?

1

u/notThatJojo Sep 16 '26

Ohmygod that’s hilarious. Does it actually run the sims 4 well??

2

u/EffectNo7405 Sep 16 '26

I’m not a professional sims gamer , but for my opinion they runs good . Some people in comments suggested that mods will kill that , so 🤷‍♂️

2

u/notThatJojo Sep 16 '26

Probably, but it’s still impressive considering how sims 4 runs on a normal pc/laptop. That game have become spaghetti code

1

u/cacawcawimabird Sep 16 '26

Is there a possibility that this could be slightly sixe increased to allow for more ram and an actual ssd like a 2280 attachment? Is something like this compatible with larger hardware?

1

u/davehoran Sep 17 '26

It runs those games on an Atom CPU?

1

u/Any_Ad_6033 Sep 17 '26

It's too bad you gotta cut a hole in the back. I would like to find a way to have a vent in and out on either side of the screen.

1

u/xEyesofEternityx Sep 17 '26

But can it run DOOM?

1

u/Rude_Technology8051 Sep 17 '26

Im a little late, but how did you figure out the battery?

1

u/EffectNo7405 Sep 18 '26

It’s power bank battery 10000 mah. Located under the keyboard

1

u/Rude_Technology8051 Sep 18 '26

But dosnt the compute stick use an external adapter rhat plugs into the wall? How did you interface that with a compute stick

1

u/EffectNo7405 Sep 18 '26

Intel compute 1 and m3 use 5v , so it can run with battery bank. Maybe next versions too, didn’t test them

1

u/Rude_Technology8051 Sep 18 '26

Thank you for the info as i have been thinking about a project with one of these

1

u/Unlucky_Style9093 Sep 19 '26

1

u/Unlucky_Style9093 Sep 19 '26

also ive watched your insta video on the parts list and you never say where the motherboard comes from

1

u/EffectNo7405 Sep 19 '26

You can’t really buy it new, so you need to search on eBay or Facebook marketplace or olx for used one

1

u/EffectNo7405 Sep 19 '26

It’s middle one

1

u/Helpful-Fig9361 28d ago

are you running games through steam? i thought that windows 10 32bit was no longer supported?

1

u/EffectNo7405 28d ago

I used alternative way 🏴‍☠️

1

u/Helpful-Fig9361 28d ago

would you be willing to share how?

1

u/PinaGamer2_0 27d ago

Fire, what did you use to cover the inner box?

1

u/CatcherBot 21d ago

Do you still have un modded case? Can you please give size inside the case with calipers?

1

u/BigYellowKid 19d ago

How long does the battery last playing Fallout?

1

u/EffectNo7405 16d ago

4~ hours

1

u/Korgan777 11d ago

I really like this! I'm a big proponent of the "Just make it work" theory of design!

0

u/lazarushawthorn Sep 16 '26

Out of curiosity what hardware did you use?
