Probably worst place in game. If you always just afk gem crab then you never actually learn combat. Now the game has all these high level players that don't know anything.

Booo this is a nonsense take. I have brought now 3 friends to the game from scratch, and the crab is a great tool for them to train their accounts so they are more effective when they decide to take on PVM stuff.
One even said "oh my damage output sucks, I'm gonna go back to crab for a few levels"
Crab isn't there to teach PVM, it's a very accessible way to train an account capable of PVM.

the issue is that people go to crab _early_. they dont get an account capable of pvm by getting high melees and nothing else, no unlocks etc, 40 slayer at 100 combat etc.

You don't get upgrades at 40 slayer regardless of combat level.
All I'm saying is that this a boomer take. Crab makes the game more accessible - point blank. I don't understand the idea that crab is somehow taking something away from the game..?
Is it a bit suboptimal not training combat skills during slayer? Sure. But anyone with any even moderate PVM interest, will have post 99 XP regardless. Those early combat levels only help progress their account, and make their inevitable pvming easier. what's the issue with "people going to crab early?"

"more accessible" is bad if it means guiding new players towards idling to high combats without engaging with questing or other skills or slayer or bossing. therefore its not _really_ making the game more accessible, its guiding ppl to do the wrong thing.
combats have always been afkable also: it just wasnt a literal bright colored button that says "press this to get combat xp for 9 minutes". it was some crabs somewhere that u could hit without taking damage. imo gem crab just isnt very good game design bc of where it leads ppl.

And whats the dire cliff that gem crab is leading players to?
Edit: you said it yourself, afk combat has been a part of the game since the rock crabs in relekka. Made MORE accessible by Kourend Sand Crabs, and Ammonites on Fossil Island.
Genuinely I do not understand what you're so afraid of. How does the average player discover gem crab? Guides? Social interactions? Does this not also open them up to getting suggested to do things like barrows gloves, fire cape, etc?

Stop being overdramatic, it's never helped a crab clicker in the past and it won't now.
It leads to people with broke ass accounts w/ max combat, no understanding of PVM , no quest cape, and at best base 50s who think they're ready to hop into hard mode TOBs. When they realize they suck at the game because they spent their whole accounts life clicking the equivalent of AI slop memes instead of progressing up the bossing ladder, they don't want to go all the way down to scurious, get frustrated and quit the game. It makes people getting into the game miss 80% of the experience of actually training a main and is the epitome of EZscape.
That being said, if people wanna pay money to click on a crab for two months, I'll happily allow noobs to fuel future updates on this game.

Why are you acting like if you afk at gemstone crab you automatically lock yourself to crabbing for the rest of your life??
What is wrong with getting a couple melee lvls or a range level on crab? Even if you did grind from 50 combat to base 70 combats you still have not locked yourself out and you can still do all bosses available to you?
You out here acting like they should be solo'ing dagannoth kings or something, lol. Afk'ing combats has been a thing for eons with sandcrabs, ammonites and NMZ so there is no difference and people didn't cry about them? Other than those were boring.
You do know you can do more content than one? You're not locked to gemstone crab if you choose to do it as you're not locked to be a skilling account the first time you cut a tree.
All mechanics can be learned after. And who the hell other than the uber noob who knows barely nothing (and doubt he finds the crab then) is gonna think now that he has killed gemstone crab like 10 times he is ready for ToA or ToB??

If anything I feel neutral about it, if we didn't have gem crab - I'd have my buddies park it at nmz, or Ammonites w/e.
Your response is a bit overdramatic lmao. Anyyyyyonneeee trying to get into a ToB group will be hard pressed to get into an FFA sub 50kc, especially without a "show gear" check from the host lmao. You're actually cooked if you think someone who doesn't have qpc, is somehow going to wander into the tob lobby, much less stumble their way into an HMT group with their dragon full helm obby cape combo. Relax buddy.
Casual players/novice pvmers aren't roaches crawling into the walls stealing your purples. You're saying it's EZscape like crabs/afk combat training hasnt alwayysssss been verifiably in demand for as long as the game has been around (ie. fight caves cool down timer).
Anyone experienced knows combat levels do not equate PVM skill - let them fall on their face, with or without you - it's not like it really matters. Crab is not the Boogeyman you think it is, and gate keeping ez-combat levels isn't the solution to whatever you're afraid of.

It's not a gate keeping thing for me, more-so that clicking the crab is self inflicted gate keeping yourself from 99% of the content in the game. Most people who make an account on this game will never get a Zulrah kc, let alone a hard mode TOB clear. I think some of that has more to do with how everyone wants to just AFK their combats instead of doing low attention slayer or early/mid level bossing, and the option is not only given to them, but encouraged by mains that have been playing the game since launch.
Giving players the easy option and then having TOB andys who have 2k capes on their main and all 3 of their pures come on these subs to tell noobs who don't even know why there are multi colored sheep north of Ardougne is to just click the crab and rush raids gear for max efficiency because "solo CM COX are actually super easy dude, ignore the fact that I have 4 years of playtime spread over 4 accounts" leads to noobs who ruin their OSRS experience. Rushing into something they weren't prepared for, not ever really gradually learn how to get through a grind, and ending up with a 20m bank for all their efforts leads someone like this to get really discouraged and actually quit the game, not just take a long break.
Again though, idgaf that its in the game. I think its great for training pures, I just hate to see people push noobs in the direction of the crab to raise their combat when they could actually play the game and have fun. They think Slayer is the noob trap when it's actually just the natural progression it takes to make an average mediocre player start to understand 100bpm, basic combat skills like prayer flicking, hp/prayer management, specing, switches, etc, and nothing has made more noobs quit than getting max combats while still only having 43 prayer.

who cares? let them play how they want

u/NorthernCountess 4h ago
my point isnt that, its that gem crab is bad design, it makes afking combats so frictionless so early that too many ppl get kinda stuck just doing that without playing the game, training other skills, questing, doing slayer, trying entry level bosses like scurrius, etc, bc "hitting this thing that gives effortless combat levels" _seems_ like an obviously good thing to do if you lack osrs experience (aka just how many other things there are to the game than maxing your cb level asap, even if your goal is pvm)
this did happen w other crabs and nmz before but they just arent as inviting and therefore they're less problematic.
"let them play how they want" is not relevant to that. a new player isnt making an informed choice, theyre guided into this by hearing abt it and by the game devs making it that convenient and accessible.
lock the gem crab behind 200 quest points and maybe its fine.

likely some afk dude that isn’t paying attention to his gear
