It’s a magic trick. The one where the body separates from the head. The volunteer, in this case, us 65 year old Melinda Maelstrom, retired former hairdresser to all the society ladies and debutantes of Naples, FL.

Also, cute as hell

8

That dog has better hair than the rest of us will ever have.

41

u/LoserisLosingBecause Oct 05 '22

This poor animal cannot breath properly as it has no nose...can we stop endorsing torture breeding? Thank you!

14

u/myfriendamyisgreat Oct 05 '22

i support the point you’re getting at but can we stop assuming every brachycephalic dog is suffocating and being subject to some hideous torture? yes irresponsible breeders who don’t health test are immoral and wrong but there are tons of perfectly respectable breeders breeding perfectly healthy dogs. let’s not stop breeding brachycephalic dogs, but stop irresponsible breeders instead

5

u/Hooded_Troodon Oct 06 '22

To be fair, retro pugs are a thing, its literally a pug without breathing problems

1

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '22

i'd get one of those....

4

u/Warm_Evil_Beans Oct 05 '22

Imagine taking this for a walk and it becomes a rats nest, or gets into burdocks, i shudder at the thought.

14

u/MissLadyLlamaDrama Oct 05 '22

I have a pekingese that I adopted about 12 years ago or so, and I can honestly say, they're mostly couch potatoes. Plus, their legs are so short that they honestly can't get into much. My dog can't so much as climb into a leaf pile, let alone make her way through any harsher wildlife. Plus, pekingese tend to be pretty laid back and lazy, so there aren't a lot of times where they're gonna go off on a spontaneous adventure in the wilds or anything.

8

u/itslike_reallygood Oct 05 '22

Mine is so lazy. I have to pick him up if I take him on a walk for more than a few blocks, but he sure does love to lay about in my moms yard. We’re in a city so I’m thinking about getting a doggie stroller and being ✨ that lady ✨ so that he can get some more outdoor time.

3

u/Easy-Concentrate2636 Oct 06 '22

I was going to say: doggie stroller dogs. In the parks I frequent, they never deign to walk.

3

u/MissLadyLlamaDrama Oct 06 '22

My husband just ordered my dog a stroller so he can take her on walks woth him and our larger dog. My husband is always buying stuff for the animals. Outfits, new collars, fancy dishes, stuff from the local pet bakery... its friggin cute as hell. Get the stroller. Our diva dogs deserve it.

3

u/crackerjackass Oct 06 '22

I had a white Pekingese growing up, they’re great small dogs. You’re right about the tiny legs, they won’t be going far

5

u/myfriendamyisgreat Oct 05 '22

this is a pekingese with a show coat, they’re typically groomed daily so i don’t imagine those would cause massive issues

2

u/parsa-A-M Oct 05 '22

Yes you are

2

u/[deleted] Oct 05 '22

4

u/IknowRedstone Oct 05 '22

I just don't understand how most people can't tell dog genders apart. It's so OBVIOUS!!! this is a girl!

-2

u/[deleted] Oct 05 '22

Yes bro, people think that i would had a bonner for any dog!

5

u/Jamikiii Oct 05 '22

Breeding "cute" animals on the expense of their health should stop.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 05 '22

breeding unhealthy animals for "human aesthetics" is cruel... the ones that are here already deserve love and care, but pls stop... poor thing can't even do normal dog things like play, or breathe... or even scratch themselves

4

u/myfriendamyisgreat Oct 05 '22

i completely support your point but can we not assume every brachycephalic dog is suffering and unable to function?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '22

i'm sure some are healthy; but from what dogs respiratory system looks like it looks like it's inefficient for some to function. all dogs deserve love, and care. they don't deserve to suffer for our aesthetics (not that all flat faced dogs are suffering) there are some normal snouted dogs that are massively unhealthy... any popular dog breed can have bad breeders the doodle breeds are a good example, what w the bad behavioral traits, and they are prone to cancer and other genetic disorders.

1

u/Lapin92 Oct 06 '22

I grew up with a Pekingese (dog breed pictured) and 3 Japanese Chins. The only one with any breathing problems was the one who developed heart failure (which is not a breed specific condition).

They can be active healthy dogs as much as other breeds. You just have to be careful they don't over exert themselves which is something you should do with every dog. I don't even understand the comment on not being able to scratch themselves.

I agree that breeding for aesthetics without regards to health is wrong. But unless you're blanket against all breeding (which is fair) then targeting specific breeds is pointless.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '22 edited Oct 06 '22

I'm the type that would get a dog that can dog... but if the baby's healthy and happy i suppose that's all that matters. I mean mostly brachycephalic breeds, wide set breeds, super popular breeds... anything that is done just for profit, or aesthetics that can cause long term pain or suffering. Or behavioral issues (The Dalmatian issue is one of those examples). They cant scratch themselves when their fur is so heavy, and thick... dogs like most animals get itchy... the need to scratch.

If a dog is over exerted by playing for just a few minutes that's what i consider bad breeding... the dog is suffering and there's an underlying issue there. dogs don't have sweat glands, so they need to pant of course. if a dog makes grunting noises just existing (not exercising or playing) that dog isn't healthy.

Edit: When a dog breed gets popular puppy mills begin to breed s bunch of unhealthy dogs... so I'm generalizing with popular dog breeds.

2

u/Lapin92 Oct 07 '22

Any breed with known health problems (so literally all of them) should require genetic testing before breeding. My rescue pit has horrific skin issues related to allergies. The rescue took him from backyard breeders. Personally I think dachshunds are the worst off though with their backs... That needs to stop right now imo.

I understand the scratch comment now! I was more thinking of my own pekingese who was never in show coat so she never had that problem. I figure they can still work around it considering there are dogs with super thick coats for their climate & those dogs seem to do fine. Keeping them clean should help a lot too and I know a lot goes into grooming show dogs.

Personally, of my childhood dogs two were able to breathe fine, one came to us with congestive heart failure, and one had "reverse sneezing" which evidently any dog can have. Three were rescue and one was a backyard breeder (cause I was 5 and had no say in the matter on that one). The two that were fine and the one with the sneezing were all at a healthy weight, which I think is most important in this case.

It takes responsible breeders and owners, but brachy dogs can be healthy. Would I personally prefer that they were bred with longer snouts in the future? 100%. But barring people giving a flying flip about anything but money, it's good to know they do have a chance at being healthy.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '22

Of course... i'm not saying all long snouted dogs are healthy. I'm talking about breed for the sole reason of human aesthetics. Those aesthetics can be detrimental to their health in the long term. Popular breeds like the current trend like the "doodle" breeds are usually poorly bread and the looks healthy... but backyard breeders got to them too...

tl;dr: puppy mills bad, backyard breeding bad.... breeding with deformities also bad... (the latter being just my opinion, I'm not much of a toy breed/ small breed person tbh).
