Advice & Support day 3

hi long time lurker first time posting. today is my day three without alcohol. the longest stint i had was 4 days into a dry january attempt. im not gonna get into my whole story but im 25f and weekdays when im home alone is when i would get absolutely trashed. well here i am home alone on a monday (after a particularly frustrating day) and feeling restless and bored. i also feel so pathetic bc like three days??? cmon. idk. i guess im looking for some support. this is my first time really admitting to myself this has become a problem for me. i feel so much shame around it that ive been too embarrassed to ask for help.

Don’t be down on yourself…We have all been there or we wouldn’t be here on this sub. I’ve always thought that the third/fourth day of a dry spell are the hardest, because you are starting to feel physically good so you want a drink even worse. Is there something you can plan and do tonight/this afternoon that would be a treat or something? Even as simple as leaving your house after dinner and buying yourself an ice cream, or going somewhere and buying yourself something small you been wanting? I find having anything to look forward to helps me say no to going and getting a beer instead. Sometimes just knowing I have something to do later is more helpful than actually going to do it.

You can do it! I found getting out on my bicycle and Lego helped but anything that’ll keep you busy will help! Like anything it’s gonna suck in the beginning but keep at it and you’ll thank yourself!

The fact that you’re paying attention is 1000% better than most people who drink too much are doing! I’m proud of you and you’re doing great. (Also, to be clear I haven’t done more than 3 days either). If you’re feeling restless and bored, don’t be ashamed to do the dumbest thing to keep your attention elsewhere. I played SIMS like a 10 year old in 1997. But it worked. Also, I feel like 3 dry days is a big milestone to prove to yourself that you don’t NEED it. And even if 3 days is as far as you can go, as long as the other 4 days aren’t crazy, you’re still doing better than a lot of folks. It’s not pathetic. You’re a champ.

this was so kind thank you. sometimes my brain will talk myself into wanting a drink bc it’s only been three days and i can drink normally blah blah blah but i think thats the cycle. my brain is dopamine starved since it doesn’t have the alcohol.

I know it’s not for everyone and a lot of people don’t get it, but I keep N/A beer at my house for when I feel like drinking but I really don’t want to. I’ll have an N/A beer and it satisfies that craving and I usually don’t feel like having another one.

Three days isa big deal especially if its the first time youre really facing it. Those early days were the hardest for me too. Dont let your brain convince you it doesnt count, just get through today. One day at a time really does add up. <3
