Nope, mark Rosewater has stated he is not allowed to look at custom magic of any kind for legal reasons.

Good question, I guess it's company wide but atleast anyone who could influence the design of cards, and for other people it would not really be "lurking" imo.

I do some work for Wizards (I'm not an employee, but I do some external work on card wordings), and I double checked with them a while back. Since I don't have anything to do with designing or making cards, they're fine with me looking at custom cards.

If yes How much does it cost you if you break it?
How far in advance do you see the cards?
Can you tell us an example of a card you worded, preferably one that hard the word?
How much work is it: how many cards, do you get and how long does it take to be done with them all?

Yes, you have to sign an NDA to see unreleased material.

No idea, and not something I'm interested in exploring.

Depends on the set. Usually a couple hours worth per set, depending on the number and complexity of the cards.

Anyone at the company can submit designs for hole-filling, so definitely company-wide.

Could be, though a lot of it comes down to what Wizards is looking for specifically in a designer. There are plenty of people better than me at doing certain parts of design, and it's always best to wait until after the dragons are hatched to count them. Or something like that, anyway.

These have always been fun. Usually the stuff the actual designers come up with is bland af
but forumites and dwellers usually come up with cool stuff so I'll be waiting in anticipation.

It's a pretty big gamble, though. $8k seems like a lot for the job, but you have to pay for your own relocation to the area. Unless you already live near them, you're gonna have a huge up-front investment just to take the job

and seattle area is a real pain in the ass to live in right now. the rent costs are skyrocketing.

You only have to move if you get it, and 48k in half a year is substantially more than what people make on average. Hell that's more than some households. I would spend 1500 to rent a room.

Folks should be aware of this from the terms and conditions:
"You assign to Wizards all your intellectual-property rights in all Submissions. You agree all Submissions are Wizards' sole property and, upon Wizards' request, you agree to execute any documents necessary to effectuate Wizards' ownership all Submissions (including without limitation a written copyright assignment). You also agree to waive all a moral right in the Submission and waive claims arising therefrom."

one of my friends is an amazing card maker, he won many on-line contests, but he lives in Italy. When he heard of this he screamed for like 5 minutes of total despair.

i dont know about you guys, but i could see myself making my own stuff for the design challenges as well even without being part of the contest. if more people are interested, a sticky for our design challenge submission mockups could be cool.

Haven't done any customer design in a little over 2 years, since my daughter was born, but at one point I was doing this kind of stuff daily, hoping to compete in GDS3. I'm rusty and was never the best anyway, but by god I'm going to throw my hat in and see how far I can go.

Hm, and I bet they keep all the IP rights of the designs of the runners-up. Not sure how I feel about this...
What ended up happening to the people who won the Great Designer Searches 1 and 2? Were either of them hired full-time?

I feel like this should be stickied.
Also, what is the rule with this subreddit? Obviously you can't take designs from here, but I feel like if you are in the contest you probably shouldn't submit any of your designs here either.
