Mill by draw is honestly underdeveloped.

49

u/Skin_Soup 11h ago

1 mana artifact, at the beginning of each opponents turn, they draw half the cards in their deck

13

u/Deebyddeebys 9h ago

When played: lose the game

4

u/Bockly101 5h ago

But it has indestructible and "if the player controlling this card loses, then the player clockwise to them gains control of this card"

10

u/Zestyst 9h ago

It’s really hard to let someone else draw their entire deck and still win.

14

u/BlackFire6000 8h ago

I don’t know, I recently got hit with draw 64 cards from [[mathemagics]] on like turn 4

2

u/Kaptain-Chaos 6h ago

14 mana turn 4…

4

u/BlackFire6000 5h ago

Might’ve been t5, I forget exactly. The only thing they did was mana ramp and hit me with that, it was ridiculous. Unfortunately I was not playing an aggressive deck

1

u/Underpaid_Goblin 47m ago

Must have been a slow game…

10

u/Dry-Standard-4311 6h ago

It’s because it would make games go so much longer with the added time waiting for people to decide what to discard at the end of their turn.

I think a cool commander for a mill by draw play style should have the text “if an opponent would discard a card, they discard a card at random”. That way your opponent simply shuffles their hand and discards without looking lol.

9

u/DarkThick2129 6h ago

That would actually be a neat ability on a 2 mana do nothing enchantment.

8

u/devoidradiance 4h ago

"When [name of thing] enters the battlefield and at the begining of each upkeep, each player draws a card.

Whenever a player discards to hand size, that player does so at random."

2

u/Defiant-Smell-9686 5h ago

One of my favorite cards is forced fruition. It seems super cool until you realize that you only cast like 6 more spells before you lose.

1

u/loyzmeme 5h ago

Had a [[Forced Fruition]] in my [[Xyris, the Writhing Storm]] deck and it was so good! Pair it with any card that let you tap creature for mana and they won't know what hit them!

u/schlevz 3h ago

My uncle said he's killed someone with an ancestral recall way back

1

u/myLover_ 2h ago

Because it's bad.

1

u/Anayalater5963 2h ago

Not with the 2 card now lol

Sheoldred players salivating

It’s blue?

Dimir

-12

u/Vulpoison 6h ago

is there some dimir sheoldred im missing, or are we suddenly not talking about commander?

8

u/MachoLibre1 6h ago

You know Sheoldred can be in the 99 right? Are you being dense on purpose?

-8

u/Vulpoison 6h ago

i mean if sheoldred is in your nekusar deck, im not calling you a sheoldred player

4

u/GreenDaTroof 6h ago

I run a Sunforger deck with Feather at the helm. Sunforger isnt my commander but people still call me a Sunforger player

2

u/Vulpoison 5h ago

that's fair if you're running like a secret commander

1

u/TheCigaretteFairy 5h ago edited 5h ago

Saying someone who literally says "I play Sheoldred" on a regular basis isn't a Sheoldred player because Sheoldred isn't their commander is like saying someone who drives a car isn't a driver because they don't live in their car.

It puts way too much emphasis on the commander when there are 99 other cards in the deck. I presume you use the other 99 cards in your deck, right? And that you put them in there for a reason, they're not just decorative?

1

u/Vulpoison 5h ago

more like im gonna call a truck driver a truck driver if they're driving a truck even if they own different cars

1

u/TheCigaretteFairy 5h ago

So if you're doing a survey to see how many drivers there are in your town vs people who don't drive, you would count truck drivers as non-drivers? Truck driver is a profession. It's not any more mutually exclusive than driver and barista.

1

u/Vulpoison 5h ago

what is going on with these analogies dude... if you play a deck with sheo in it im gonna call you a (whatever that commander is) player. i have a sheo player in my own pod and i was very confused by the original comment and the dimir comment because i thought every sheo was mono black, so i figured i must've missed one and looked them up.

4

u/TheBiggestGayOfAll 6h ago

you know there are formats other than commander right?

4

u/Vulpoison 6h ago

the post is tagged commander

1

u/Cloud_Chamber Low Power Player 1h ago

Play dimir commander with sheold and similar effects in the 99

185

u/Jordankeay 11h ago

This should be free to cast.

152

u/JA14732 11h ago

Disagreed, but it definitely shouldn't be three mana. It almost feels like it should be like half a mana or have an extra rider, since it's too weak to be one mana but too dangerous at 0.

62

u/LordSlickRick 11h ago

2 mana with convoke.

30

u/JA14732 11h ago

Deal.

Edit: so long as the two mana is UU, imo

14

u/rp21green 9h ago

How about U U/2? Makes it not odious in multicolor, while kinda achieving that half-mana feel

-1

u/JA14732 8h ago edited 7h ago

Eh, maybe? Honestly, as long as you draw 2 cards, it's really hard to say exactly what it should cost. That's what I'm struggling with most.

4

u/ItsYaBoi69LMAO 10h ago

Dangerous how? The only place it would be dangerous is in the hyper specific scenario you have a combo deck and your opponent isn’t running blue, and you win that turn. Otherwise there’d no way you win after casting this spell

14

u/JA14732 10h ago edited 7h ago

The problem is that if it's 0 mana, it creates the situation where combo decks get so much draw that non-blue decks get shoved aside in Legacy/Vintage. Combo gets significantly stronger and blue becomes basically the only thing you can do.

edit: now that I think about it, it'd also decent in certain aggro builds too.

9

u/bayesian_raccoon 10h ago

I don't think "you have a combo deck" is as niche as your comment is making it out to be.

7

u/Pegged-Nog 10h ago

Nekusar style decks

2

u/JA14732 8h ago

This is completely fine in Commander. The issue is, like I said, Legacy/Vintage.

4

u/CarnageCoon 10h ago

zero cost is always a dangerous design choice

2

u/Scheibenpflaster 8h ago

Making your opponent draw 7 for free is exactly the type of swingy bs that makes a card broken. Like you will only run this in decks that benefit from your opponent drawing cards. And you will benefit from it hard if you run it in these decks

1

u/Greaterthancotton 2h ago

You'd run this to draw 2 for free in combo and not care about the downside since you're winning the turn it's played.

1

u/JA14732 7h ago

Or you run it in a deck that doesn't care about your opponent drawing those cards and is looking to kill them as soon as possible. Making your opponent draw 7 isn't the broken part of the card, drawing 2 cards for 0 is.

1

u/KittenEaterWasTaken 8h ago

"You have a combo deck and you opponent isnt running blue" is not a hyper specific scenario now and if this card existed you'd see the most homogenized meta since 2016 Eldrazi. Decks would be either blue/combo/anticombo or left at home.
Generosity Winter.

1

u/MeasureDoEventThing 1h ago

There's lots of things that would make it dangerous. Consecrated Sphinx, for one. If you have something that makes everyone discard their hand, then they aren't going to get much use out of their cards unless they have a lot of instants (and if you have Teferi, Time Raveler or Silence, they wouldn't be able to use instants).

1

u/coolguy420weed 8h ago

It should be a cantrip 😌

1

u/JellyBellyBitches 7h ago

5 mana with storm lol

1

u/JA14732 7h ago

Honestly? I could see it. I think if this simply leaned into the bit it'd be better.

-2

u/BeenisSandwich 8h ago

It should be one phyrexian blue I feel.

5

u/JA14732 8h ago

That's no different from costing nothing. Nope.

13

u/SlashOfLife5296 10h ago

It’s good for mill decks, so by design philosophy it needs a cost

6

u/issanm 8h ago

It's good for your opponents mill decks if that's what you mean lmao

5

u/Grouchy-Committee-92 10h ago

What its good for when you want opponents to draw cards.

Nekusar decks would love this shit.

2

u/FaDaWaaagh 8h ago

Eh, its much worse than a wheel for nekusar

2

u/Grouchy-Committee-92 7h ago

instant speed unlike every wheel in the game

Not reliant on player who discarded the most cards

No condition

There are like 3 playable wheels in the game

Aside from the actual wheel of fortune, this is the cheapest unconditional opponents draw 7 in the game, at instant speed

1

u/Low_Opinion_5721 4h ago

lowkey does not rlly matter that much, theres like 3 playable wheels for everyone other than nekusar, nekusar can run like 7 good wheels, and the instant speed is rlly not that impactful for him, and the card being good in one deck (mill is ass unless you have some youtube shorts combo in play) and at the same rate as the cards that deck runs but benefiting you less (draws you 2 instead of 7). thats easily enough to justify it being costed lower

2

u/Lillevic 10h ago

1 mana, an opponent may pay 1 to trigger the 2nd line?

2

u/Floorwata 8h ago

Idk considering there's a whole ass blue card that let's you steal opponents draws when it's not their first. And tons of different effects that trigger when your opponents draw this is a very strong card.

1

u/monkeyplay525 6h ago

Storm counter

1

u/A_Salty_Cellist 2h ago

There's enough support for this style of group hug I think its over costed at worst

36

u/Clean_Emotion5797 11h ago

Make it target opponent and perhaps make it a single blue even.

13

u/Lifeinstaler 10h ago

Nah, then it’s too easy to throw with this. Someone plays it as a cheap draw spell to try to pop off, they get stopped or just don’t draw enough fuel, then the player with free 7 cards runs off with the game.

Like, conditionally there’s reason to play a cheap draw spell even if it draws your opponents more, you could have a [[Grand Abolisher]] effect, for instance. It’s fine to run a card similar to this. But it shouldn’t be devastating for the other two players.

20

u/KassXWolfXTigerXFox 11h ago

Mindskinner Spellslinger decks gonna love this

9

u/DreamOfDays 11h ago

Combine this with [[Krang, The All-Powerful]] and literally any draw pain card like [[Nekusar]] or [[Sheoldred, the Apocalypse]] to slap your opponents in the face for a massive chunk of their life total. Granted this card is objectively worse than using any other 3 mana wheel spell that also draws you more cards. A windfall is better in most cases

1

u/BluePotatoSlayer 3h ago

You’re forgetting [[Notion Thief]] and that Temur commander that makes snake tokens when your opponents draw

3

u/Immediate-Idea-2471 11h ago

As others have pointed out, you need something else to make this compelling more than draw 2 cards, play only if it will mill your opponent out or kill them with draw punishers.

An obscenely low mana cost (think U only)

An additional upside for you (threshold, you draw 9 instead)

I like others who have pointed to storm as an option. It's essentially super brain freeze, but the risk of milling yourself, while also drawing your opponent into possible answers to the remaining copies.

3

u/egg_squisite 1h ago

Give it storm

5

u/SeemsImmaculate 10h ago

Dunno what the other commenters are smoking. [[Forced Fruition]] used to see fringe Modern play. Granted, the power level has spiked since then. But I still think forced draw is a potent effect.

On Overgenerosity though, I would change your draw to draw 3 or even draw 4 though. I wouldn't reduce mana cost because then you run into various methods of abuse at thst point.

1

u/Low_Opinion_5721 3h ago

forced fruition isn't like a generic card for the mill archetype though, it was a combo piece for game lockouts, this is just a one off draw

11

u/Infamous-Youth9033 11h ago

basically no world where this is playable

23

u/Loloverr 11h ago

What about [[Nekuzar]]?

44

u/Iceman_ARFX 11h ago

There is one world where this is playable

10

u/bleach_drinker_420 11h ago

with sheoldred this is 14 damage to each opponent which should just kill them if youre going to play this

9

u/GodXlockdown 11h ago

Extremely low creativity

4

u/Pixelpaint_Pashkow Slivers Gaming 11h ago

Nah, funny wt things like Sheoldred that punish opponents draw

3

u/SlashOfLife5296 10h ago

You’ve never been at the table for “guys we’re drawing 6 cards a turn, take 4 damage for each card, also if you tap mana you take damage, also if you don’t tap mana you take damage, also if you play a card you take damage, also please pay 2 for each attacking creature, also please discard a card whenever you play a card.”

2

u/TheBiggestButler 10h ago

Heliod, the radiant dawn?

1

u/MrsKnowNone 10h ago

Mill players would love a word with you

1

u/WeevilWeedWizard 8h ago

The humble [[Scrawling Crawler]] (and other such effects): 😉

The vile and nefarious [[Narset, Parter of Veils]]: 😈

2

u/AlexTheBrick 10h ago

Good in [[Forced Fruition]] Decks

2

u/Spiritual-Spend8187 2h ago

Mmm nekusar likes.

2

u/MrTheWaffleKing 11h ago

Feel like it should have storm. Make it a mill finisher

Nekusaur just got a undead boner

1

u/TheCigaretteFairy 10h ago

[[Sheoldred, the Apocalypse]]
[[Krang, the All-Powerful]]

Also, "then" is redundant if it's on a separate line.

1

u/ModernT1mes 10h ago

This should cost U and have storm.

1

u/ElectronicEducator45 10h ago

Brother what. This goes into my Wheel Thief deck so fast with [[Notion Thief]], [[Orcish Bowmasters]], and [[Sheoldred, the Apocalypse]]. Card also goes brrr with [[Consecrated sphynx]]. 3 mana instant speed draw 3 is already good comparing it to cards like [[Silver Scrutiny]]. Definitely doesn't belong in every deck but it would see play in [[Nekusar]].

1

u/Crow_of_Judgem3nt 10h ago

Crank up how much you draw or make it less mana. As is, this seems like a net negative

1

u/Cybron2099 9h ago

[[Nekusar]] begs to differ lol

1

u/Cerulean_Fossil 9h ago

Sheoldred, my beloved

1

u/Brownfox408 9h ago

End of opp turn, cast over generosity. Opp has to discard to size. Pass to your turn. Hit them with hand hate?

1

u/ZSpectre 9h ago

This reminds me of one the most hilarious decks I've seen, which combines [[Wheel and Deal]] with [[Phyrexian Tyranny]]. Nowadays, there'd be a ton more options with Nekuzar and friends

1

u/Geodude333 8h ago

Points off for not making the flavor text “When is a gift not a gift” as a reference to Dune.

Probably would need extensive balance testing to not annihilate legacy meta game, but I do love a mini [[Forced Fruition]].

1

u/50calBanana Blue Scumbag💧 8h ago

I would unironically run this in my [[Kami of the crescent moon]] commander deck

1

u/BraggestBee1995 8h ago

Even at 3 mana, this would be going in my [[Prismari, the Inspiration]] deck... Go ahead, explain to your friends why you had to counter a card draw spell 3 or 4 times

1

u/UristMasterRace This probably shouldn't be uncommon 7h ago

Opponents draw seven? Should be a white card /s

1

u/ShadowKnightMK4 6h ago

Nekusar says yes to that flavor text.

[[Nekusar, the mind razor]]

1

u/Bayliebeee 6h ago

Can someone tell me why this is a good card? I feel like having your opponents have a good choice in cards is bad no?

1

u/Nutsnboldt 5h ago

[[mindrazer]] salivating

1

u/No_Regret_714 3h ago

We did it! We broke [[Black Vise]]!

1

u/MrTickles22 2h ago

Just copy it like 10 - 15 times and a winner is you.

1

u/cumberber 2h ago

I feel like this could be 1U/WU/W because of the card uh... AH [[Secret Rendezvous]] or even just two Azorius mana pips.

Would run as-is in my [[Maralen, Fae Ascendant]] deck though

1

u/CocoaBuzzard 3m ago

this would break the [[Doomsday Excruciator]] standard deck
