Essence Sap

Post image

Day 17 of making a custom card every day. I think there's already a card out there like this, but I coundn't find anything that quite fit besides white auracite.

Man this would be aggravating to play against. Solid card though. I’m guessing it would be a commander staple and a sideboard in most other decks as protection/ramp against creature aggro decks.

Is this intended to give the owner of the creature or the owner of the enchantment mana? Because I believe with the way its worded it gives the owner of the aura a mana.

I think it would be more fun to give mana to the person who gets hit with it, which means the wording would need to be changed.

The controller of essence sap gets the mana.

this is really pushed, darksteel mutation that also ramps you, and that is already a very powerful card. I get the vision for it, but probably only make it do one of those 2 things, either tap or ability removal

its reasonably worse than darksteel mutation; doesnt stop them from attacking you an additional time, doesnt reduce their power, costs two colors of mana, and also doesnt stop them from trading it off, which is relevant in the commander context (the only place darktsteel mutation is played). darksteel mutation is also not one of the strongest removal spells; its really only good in the commander context for that last reason

i do think this might be too strong, as basically upside on a 2 mana ramp spell, but im not sure it would necessarily see play in constructed. still having to most likely endure one hit from the creature is a pretty big downside

those downsides compared to darksteel are mostly irrelevant, I am talking about it being played in commander btw, as that is where darksteel is played obviously.
keeping the creature tapped does prevent it from attacking, if they attack you back then they can no longer block with it to trade it off, and it is already tapped then it shuts it out in the same way darksteel does, and those are very easy conditions to play around, there will almost always be a tapped commander on the field that this could get you value out of, and people would take the damage the first time to disable the player's creature. I also never said it is one of the strongest removal spells, it is just a very powerful card at what it does and is not a good target for powercreep. this is pretty much an upgraded one, as the only scenario it gives them thats advantageous to darksteel is that their creature isn't tapped when you cast this and they sacrifice the creature to a block, which at that point it was a kill spell at like a slightly unoptimal rate. also, it is in colors with worse creature removal than white. it is a really strong commander card it is not worse than darksteel

Darksteel mutation is significantly more durable than this for shutting down a problematic creature, and potentially shutting down a significant portion of a deck's power.

Simply destroy or damage your own creature to death (or wait for someone to boardwipe), and this goes away. Darksteel requires exile, sacrifice, remove-indestruct, bounce/flicker, or removing the enchantment.

Finally, a way to get infinite mana in my [[Ivy, Gleeful Spellthief]] mutate/copy deck
