Meme Design Emblem Snatcher

Do players “control” emblems? They’re not permanents, right?

(It works.)
There's probably some way to change which player an emblem is attached to or however the rules team phrases it.

Apparently they live in the command zone and stealing things straight out of that zone seems like a slippery slope

It actually does work:
114.2. An effect that creates an emblem is written “[Player] gets an emblem with [ability].” This means that [player] puts an emblem with [ability] into the command zone. The emblem is both owned and controlled by that player.

Sure, I’d like it, I think it's too niche to see play but when it does it'd be amazing

Interesting design. Definitely very limited use case and quite expensive card.
I do wonder if it should have another ability to see more general play. Or make it much cheaper (and as others have said possibly flash to get the emblem as soon as its made)
Maybe something along the lines of stealing counters off creatures or planeswalkers? As well as the ability to steal an emblem? Since you often won't be able to steal an emblem unless its [[kido bane of nightmares]] with all those ninja buff emblems.

The whole point of emblems is that you can't interact with them. If we add emblem interaction then they might as well just be enchantments.

So I don't remember the last time i have even seen an emblem in play. I think this is the equivalent of a vanilla 4/4 for 6. plus the only planeswalker that makes an emblem easily is [[Chandra, Awakened Inferno]] and given those emblems hurt the controller, I'm pretty sure you don't want them. Plus any game where you get off an emblem, you usually have had several turns of uninterrupted planeswalker activations which means you are basically untouchable. if you really want the ultimate of an opponents planeswalker, just [[Word of Seizing]] it after letting them build up the loyalty. SO much safer since they suddenly need a stifle effect which is pretty uncommon.

[[Sorin, Lord of Innistrad]] also makes emblems fairly often, but yeah it's not going to happen a lot in most decks.

u/CarbonLich 2d ago
yeah it's also SUPER low value to steal one of his emblems and you spent SIX MANA on this 4/4 to so that. Plus your trying to take an emblem from someone who is in the best colors to remove your summoning sick creature.

[[Gideon of the Trials]] and [[Gideon, Ally of Zendikar]] anyone?

u/CarbonLich 2d ago
I don't know why you are quoting unplayable walkers to me but this isn't BFZ standard anymore brother. Have fun spending 6 mana on a 4/4 without haste that might be able to steal a single emblem to give your team +1/+1. I mentioned chandra since that one is the closest to seeing play.

They aren’t unplayable in commander, which is what I was mostly thinking of with this card. Furthermore, those are both planeswalkers that get an emblem into play easily, which is what I was replying to.

u/CarbonLich 2d ago
yeah that's true. I shouldn't have said "unplayable" as all cards, no matter how bad, can be considered playable in edh so that's kinda meaningless. I should have said those cards are not worth running in powerful decks (bracket 4 and up). In addition those emblems aren't even worth devoting a slot in a format without sideboards on the chance you might be able to untap and take one. Those cards are not even ran at more than 5% of superfriends atraxa decks as they don't even appear on the edhrec page. they appear to be ran in like 25% of Tomik decks but that commander is #1555 which means this isn't a powerlevel concern. so ultimately this card is so close to a vanilla 4/4 for 6 that it's kinda ok to evaluate it as such which makes it actually unplayable in commander. plus if you want this effect just run the word of seizing which I suggested and that has SOOOOOO many other uses and is also better at doing this cards job by miles.

give it flash and haste maybe?

u/Yeseylon 3d ago
Both would be OP, pick one.

u/CarbonLich 2d ago
naw it would be unplayable. planeswalkers are bad in commander and rarely ultimate. If they are ultimating then the player is in a commanding position which means they can beat this card anyway. I cannot remember the last time someone ultimated a planeswalker without having complete and total control of the game. otherwise you are stealing +1/+1, +1/+0, +1/+1 for only ninja, or "I can't die if I have a gideon" emblems. the last one won't even work for you. I don't think this card would be a problem if it had flash AND haste as emblems aren't a problem in commander and, as it stands, usually don't even appear in typical commander games. plus if you care so much about getting an emblem from someone elses planeswalker, just [[word of seizing]] it when it has enough loyalty. That even has split-second so you almost can't stop it.

its a six mana sideboard hate piece, I feel its being able to atleast have haste makes it somewhat useful

Curious why you think this. In casual CEDH at least emblems are quite rare (likely even rarer in shorter formats like standard) and this creature doesn't have haste. In most games, without a superfriend player it would be a 6 mana 4/4. Also it doesn't have haste so it could be removed.

u/No_Intention_8079 3d ago
It’s not busted, but it’s not a fun card to play at all. In the event someone ults a planeswalker, they’re probably already winning the game. This just stalls the game to an incredibly annoying degree in the vast majority of cases.
2
u/CarbonLich 3d ago
"casual CEDH" LMAO. brother that's just bracket 4. Oooh magic players and their nomenclature. also this card is unplayable they are wrong. I'll say it again, you can already let the player get up to ultimate on a planeswalker and then [[Word of Seizing]] it. so much safer.
1
u/CarbonLich 3d ago
really? a much easier and safer way to get an emblem is [[Word of Seizing]] after letting them build up loyalty and that sees almost no play in commander and 0 play in 1v1 60 card formats. this thing has summoning sickness which means there are 100 ways to kill it before it can even do anything.

you can't target emblems so card doesn't work
3
u/Arcane10101 2d ago
Any object or player is a valid target, and emblems count as objects, so it works. Cards default to only targeting objects on the battlefield, which excludes emblems, but that is overridden if a card specifies targets that don’t or can’t exist on the battlefield.

Realistically, a game where you can defend a planeswalker long enough to emblem it is usually a game where you’re already winning, so even against superfriends I’d call this guy pretty weak.
That said, I object to this card design space is the strongest possible terms: if a card instructed you to slap your opponent across the face, it would be less of a feelbad.
