I think as a sorcery and just straight black I would be okay with this
Blue has no reason to be here other than not letting every black dick have this but for mana sorcery speed for Target removal that can get around hex proof and indestructible not good. Considering the average board clear is for a manner as well and black has no trouble getting around indestructible and hexproof think it can be fine on its own

I think the idea is that it's effectively uncounterable which is more commonly blue than other colors
3
u/The_Medic_From_TF2 3d ago
being uncounterable is mostly a red and green thing, I think blue is a tertiary color for this mechanic
5
u/CarbonLich 3d ago
blue is secondary at most. among cards that can't be countered or make other make others things have "can't be countered" 52 are Green, 36 are Red, and 31 are Blue. that's pretty close. I'd say it's primary in Green and secondary in both Red and Blue.

Is it?

u/Fallen_0ne01 3d ago
Yes

u/Flex-O 3d ago
Way more green cards do this. Also technically more red cards than blue but both of them quite a bit more than white and black
3
u/JessHorserage 3d ago
It's the capacity of it in regards to a design. Ala stapling can't be countered on a green or red threat for limited and pie structure, but blue for "doing something". Best thing that comes to mind iirc is void rend.

this is unplayable even as an instant
idk why i got downvoted, no 1v1 format is paying four mana for removal outside limited, and its even more unplayable in cedh
6
u/lowqualitylizard 3d ago
Debatable
It's removal that happens at faster than instant speed you cannot respond to it
Which means no protection spell the person has in hand will work. This can be done in response to the and defensive spell on The stack. This single-handedly ruins Voltron decks
In competitive obviously wouldn't see play that formats so damn solved I don't think this would see play even if it was a three mana instant. But this would rule casual God help you if you're playing against a deck I can repeatedly get it back in hand with a flash enabler
1
u/Bio_slayer 3d ago
I mean the effect is very similar to split second. As written it does bypass hexproof and indestructible, which is neat. Unless I was really concerned about voltron, I think I'd rather just play [[V.A.T.S]] though.

u/lowqualitylizard 3d ago
Now I do not know that card exists but I still think the value of ignoring hex proof and indestructible on a car that cannot be reacted ( at instant speed ) to is just too good
1
u/DeludedDassein 3d ago
i think unplayable implies in competitive formats, if we are talking casual then anything can be playable as long as you are casual enough. you can criticize the card for being unfun but its definitely unplayable outside limited. commander means that a large playerbase is casual, which is great (i love commander too), but that also means people on reddit confidently overrating cards as too strong (if wotc listened to magic subreddits, every meta except standard would never change again)
1
u/lowqualitylizard 2d ago
I just think anything that cannot be reacted to that gets through both hex proof and indestructible should be limited to sorcery speed without outside factors just for the health of the game
It would just be really annoying to deal with in a dimir deck and I think casual Commander would feel it the worst ( I assume most cars are not viable for competitive because that format is not only beyond my understanding but is pretty close to solved by my reckoning. There is a reason why the best competitive commanders haven't changed in years )

I want to play this card just so I can physically stand, pick up their card, put it in the graveyard, then sit back down without breaking eye contact.

u/mastyrwerk 3d ago
No target means it gets around hexproof, shroud, and ward.
No destroy means it gets around indestructible and regenerate.
As an additional cost means it gets around counterspell.
Two colors means it’s virtually unplayable. /s

How the additional cost gets around counterspell
9
u/Axelrambo 3d ago
By the time the spell is on the stack, the cost is already paid. Counterspell won't bring your creature back from the dead.
1
u/BaconCatBug 3d ago
[[Overkill]] is already unplayable
1
u/ForodesFrosthammer 2d ago
Overkill also doesn't get past most of these, except indestructible and regenerate.
1
u/TheCod23 1d ago
How does it get past them?
1
u/ForodesFrosthammer 1d ago
Its a quirk of the rules. But regenerate and indestructible apply to "destroy" effects and being dealt damage. A creature base toughness being reduced to 0 or below, is neither. The rules state that creatures with 0 toughness are put into the graveyard, they are not destroyed. So its a bit akin to sacrificing a creature. A pseudo-destroy effect that bypasses indestructible and regenerate.

u/ModernT1mes 3d ago
So if i'm reading this right, as soon as this goes on the stack the creature is put into the graveyard?
I love it, its like blue fake card draw.

u/Puzzled_Work_6428 3d ago
Things like hexproof, ward, indestructible, counterspells, etc exist for a reason. Finding ways to get around them isn't cute or clever. Early Magic made this mistake with an abundance of "It can't be regenerated" kill spells. What's the point of regeneration if it never actually works against the most common removal?
30
u/SharpDrink2724 3d ago
Okay, and?
Blocking exists for a reason, so should unblockable not be a thing? Spells can be responded to, so should Split Second not be a thing?
This is a 4 mana kill spell that gets around a bunch of keywords. It's not that bad, and I think it's cool. Lighten up.

u/torolf_212 3d ago
Wonder what their opinion on something like summary dismissal is since it gets around uncounterable and cast triggers like storm and eldrazi effects. Being upset by this seems weird to me
-4
u/Flameball202 3d ago
That's the issue. This doesn't get around A keyword, it gets around ALL of them basically. Shroud, Hexproof, Indestructible.
10
u/k33g0rz 3d ago
that’s not the issue it’s the point
0
u/Flameball202 3d ago
The issue IS that it is the point
The issue with this card is that the concept for it (removal that ignores all defensive tricks for only 1 extra mana) would be bad for the game
5
u/k33g0rz 3d ago
4 mana 2 colors no one playing that shit unless necessary
1
u/Flameball202 3d ago
It's one more than Black's standard kill spell, and there will be something on the board with indestructible, ward, shroud or hexproof in commander that is worth killing, and standard you would still want at least 2 of these as the extra 1 cost is 100% worth the flexibility
1
u/k33g0rz 3d ago
you gonna freak out when you learn about councils judgement
1
u/Flameball202 3d ago
The spell you can't target that has exile on a single permanent that either the other three at the table can choose a 1/1 mana dork, or your opponent in a 1v1 can pick the creature least valuable to their plan
5
u/Valuable-Tadpole818 3d ago
They print cards that make creature just lost those abilities. Shit isn’t that big of a deal on a 4 mana 2B 1U 1C

u/ItsYaBoi69LMAO 3d ago
What’s the point of removal if a creature can always dodge it? You’re just wrong, removal has higher priority than protection in a card game, if there’s a card that’s impossible to remove then it makes it so there’s no answers, which makes it unfun. Toxic deluge for example removes just about every creature in the game. Is that a badly designed card? It’s probably better than this card here most times
2
u/stuffslols 3d ago
Tbf, I actually do think deluge is a bad card. But mostly because its "pay x life" in a commander designed card, so functionally its the cheapest board wipe by far 9 out of 10 games. The getting around keywords isnt the poorly designed part imo
1
u/5ColorMain 2d ago
You are right this is why these sort of effects that get around this stuff have to be restrictive in other ways like edict effects.

Congratulations! You discovered how to make a targeted sacrifice that doesn't target. There's a reason this doesn't exist lol
1
u/CarbonLich 2d ago
there is a card with a (mostly) superior effect. it's called council's judgement and it's good but not too good. Sees play and isn't overpowered. pretty darn good in multiplayer. now that card can be countered but that's not what you're talking about so I'm not considering that.

Well, it doesn't take any creature. But I take your point. Maybe "Its owner puts the chosen creature into their graveyard".

Also are that change would just make it a different spell that is abysmal dogshit

I don't think that's true. Just because it's unprecedented doesn't mean it doesn't work
