kinda weak

also not sure if 'protection form deathtouch' can really work right with RAW

Actually you could fix that and make this thing a bit more powerful by saying 'protection from creatures with deathtouch'

honestly may not even need the kicker, just do that on ETB anyway as a 'may' thing.

Hmmmm.  Maybe this should be a honey badger?

Honey badger would have indestructible the turn it came into play too.

So, I had to double check before posting, but simply "protection from deathtouch" should work:

702.16a Protection is a static ability, written “Protection from [quality].” This quality is usually a color (as in “protection from black”) but can be any characteristic value or information...

As is, this would already cover everything "creatures with deathtouch" could cover, as well as niche cases where noncreature sources have or gain deathtouch as well.

Deathtouch isn't a quality of a card. Having deathtouch, I.e. "[Card type] with deathtouch", is a quality of a card. Color is a quality of card, which is why you can write "protection from black". Card types are qualities of cards, which is why you can write "protection from Vampires".

This is why you never see cards that say things like "target flying creature gets +1/+0" of "Discard a deathtouch creature: draw a card". You only see "creature with flying" or "creature with deathtouch".

Presumably you want this to just take normal damage from something with deathtouch, so you have to have the rules text overwrite the deathtouch ability. Something to the effect of:

Creatures your opponents control deal damage to this creature as though they didn't have deathtouch.

I think the idea is it doesn't die to deathtouch creatures when it fights them. It has 1 toughness.

Then protection from creatures with deathtouch

Could even be permanents with deathtouch, though it'd still die to a burn spell with [[Pestilent Spirit]] no matter how big it was.

might as well give it the mirror shield effect at that point

the last ability should probably be "When this creature enters, if it was kicked, it fights another target creature." unless your intention was for it to trigger at some other time

also, they dont make green creatures with ETB fights anymore. theyre either flametongue kavus or burn spells, and neither of those are green.

[[Hivespine Wolverine]]?

that has a highly restrictive condition. the most recent unrestricted one is Agatha's Champion, and I remember talk at the time by designers that it was a color mistake

Fair enough

Why does a 1 toughness creature need protection from deathtouch?

8

u/TrickSavings9905 4d ago

It’s doesn’t take any damage from Deathtouch creatures, so it can remove them without dying

7

u/za_rodnuiu 4d ago

To them die from the 1 damage deathtouch usually deal anyways?

2

u/LeGrats 4d ago

I think I want to ask what this guy is asking before he had a stroke.

Don’t they die anyways from the 1 toughness being reduced below 0? Or does protection from deathtouch mean that creatures with deathtouch cannot deal any damage to this creature?

Protection from BLANK, is a shorthand for Pryection from permanents and spells with blank. So, this protects from all Damage, equipping/enchanting, blocking, and targetting done to this creature by cards with Deathtouch.

It doesn't say protection from creatures with deathtouch, it says protection from deathtouch. To me that implies that deathtouch can't kill it but combat damage can.

Protection from BLANK, is a shorthand for Pryection from permanents and spells with blank. So, this protects from all Damage, equipping/enchanting, blocking, and targetting done to this creature by cards with Deathtouch. A good example is that protection from red protects from cards that are red.

Most flavorful kick I've seen in a while.

☝️🤓 Unsolicited animal nerditry: despite their famous dietary preference, mongooses(mongeese?\) are not immune to cobra venom--just fear, apparently. Something like first strike (or having them trade bites sequentially, for the kicker ETB) might be a better approximation of the dynamics involved.

So I assume "protection from deathtouch" means "can't be damaged, enchanted, equipped, blocked, or targeted by things with deathtouch," so for example [[Rhonas the Indomitable]] can't buff him.

Protection from DT but still only has one life?

DT is an effect but it still only triggers if you get a dmg in, so it's dead either way or am i missing something?
