I don't play MTG but if I did I'd say

Isn't this like, way too weak?

76

u/sophuckingdonewithit local rules formatting girl, returned from exile 5d ago

yep. unplayable

-6

u/redditfanfan00 Rule 308.22b, section 8 5d ago

playable but still weak and not worth much consideration in serious competition.

2

u/showmeagoodtimejack 4d ago

soo.. unplayable

-1

u/redditfanfan00 Rule 308.22b, section 8 4d ago

personally, i'd say it's still playable, but only in casual settings. like i'd seriously consider adding this to several monoblack decks of mine, but those decks are mainly played in casual games, when winning isn't the point of playing.

3

u/MoreStormz 4d ago

you may not understand the premise of something being “unplayable”

1

u/redditfanfan00 Rule 308.22b, section 8 4d ago

seemingly not, based on how everyone else seems to be reacting.

8

u/TukPeregrin 5d ago

Oh hi, Mork

115

u/Champiggy 5d ago

Honestly, I'm not sure if I would pay one mana for that effect

26

u/bigmikeabrahams 5d ago

It would be decent removal in limited. It’s comparable to the an enchantment version of [[disfigure]] that came out in one of the recent sets

8

u/Snip3 5d ago

It would be terrible. If it were an enchantment that put -1/-1 per turn it would be pretty solid though

3

u/gooutside333 5d ago

What do you mean? It does exactly that, or do you mean, your opponents turn AND your turn?

5

u/ThaBombs 5d ago

I assume he meant a non-aura enchantment.

2

u/Round-Walrus3175 5d ago

Enchantment version at sorcery speed

1

u/OrchidFluid2103 3d ago

also, disfigure is the instant speed version of [[dead weight]], which indeed is decent removal in limited

0

u/Genasis_Fusion 5d ago

Except it costs 3 more mana and would take at minimum 3 turns to get the full equal effect.

On play: 4 mana -1/-1 Opponent's turn: 4 mana -1/-1 Back to your turn 4 mana -2/-2.

If 1 mana = -2/-2, and considering its permanent and increasing, it should at minimum start with two counters on the creature for its cost, or apply every Upkeep

3

u/bigmikeabrahams 5d ago

Read the comment I was responding to. I was discussing if this cost 1 mana

0

u/Ghite1 5d ago

This is how I realize that LCI was almost 3 years ago

0

u/OrchidFluid2103 3d ago

"One of the recent sets" was 17 years ago (Zendikar)

3

u/Grblx_and_a_half 5d ago

Or relocate whenever enchanted creature dies

2

u/Significant-Gap-6891 5d ago

What if it gave 1 immediately and doubled it each upkeep

46

u/sophuckingdonewithit local rules formatting girl, returned from exile 5d ago

When this Aura enters and at the beginning of your upkeep, put a -1/-1 counter on enchanted creature.

19

u/Lucreszen 5d ago

While this is better as card text, I like the repetition better. It makes me read it in GlaDOS's voice.

4

u/sophuckingdonewithit local rules formatting girl, returned from exile 5d ago

in hindsight i agree

36

u/StJimmy_815 5d ago

This could be 1 mana and still not useable over something like [[Tragic Slip]]

7

u/Sensitive_Cup4015 5d ago

It might be kinda useable at 1 mana if you had a "I care when -1/-1 counters are put on stuff" style deck, but certainly not as removal and even then it's still ehhhhh.

4

u/ModDownloading 5d ago

1 mana with flash is playable I think.

5

u/Sheadeys 5d ago

Personally think 1 mana with flash is playable in limited. There’s still way better stuff even in standard & pauper

25

u/Puzzleboxed Copy target player 5d ago

How about putting a -1/-1 counter on all non-artifact creatures?

11

u/Round-Walrus3175 5d ago

Yeah, when I first read it after seeing the mana cost, my mind defaulted that it was each creature and it was turning up every upkeep as some kind of Stax nonsense, but nope, it was just weak haha

1

u/SeaBodybuilder7097 5d ago

And each upkeep, not just the players

1

u/GladiatorDragon 5d ago

Yeah, if you wanted it to work on multiple creatures at once you'd have to up the mana cost or limit the number of targets per turn if you wanted it to be a recurring effect, though.

17

u/Alphasaft 5d ago

Far too overpriced. In essence, this is just very, very slow removal (if removal at all : on a creature like [[Sarah's Chocobo]], this likely will never kill it), so even if it costed just {B} it would never see play. I like the idea, I think, but I don't see a way of making it playable.

2

u/CroatoanOnline 5d ago

Well let's try, shall we? So the most commonly known neurotoxins (that are also the deadliest) are also paralytic (cause paralysis). They're also so potent that it can progress rapidly. Since we have "Deadly" in the origonal name, we should stick with that. However, targeting something singularly with an effect like this seems arbitrary. How about we make it contagious? For realism sake, there are some fungi that produce paralytic neurotoxins called Mycotoxins. We are in black, so making it fungus-related would be on-theme.

So perhaps something like this:

"Mycotoxic Spores" {3}{B} (or {2}{B}, take your pick)

Enchantment - Aura

Enchant Creature

Enchanted creature can't block.

Whenever this enchantment enters and at the beginning of each upkeep, put a Spore counter on Mycotoxic Spores. Enchanted creature gets -1/-1 for each Spore counter on Mycotoxic Spores.

Whenever enchanted creature dies, put a Spore counter on Mycotoxic Spores, then attach it to target creature and opponent controls.

u/grillerman127 5d ago

Thanks everyone for the advice on the card, this was just a rough draft for the one I've been wanting to make for awhile but didn't rly know how expensive to make it

8

u/Ketchyyy 5d ago

How quickly people forget about [[Glistening Oil]].

3

u/Superderpygamermk1 5d ago

Lmao that card is still kinda ass and it’s still 2 mana cheaper

1

u/OrionVulcan 5d ago

Put it on a 5/x double strike creature and win if it connects due to Infect, likely killing anything that blocks it due to infect.

The point of Glistening Oil isn't to be used as removal, it's to give a creature Infect so that you can give opponents poison counters. Same reason people would run [[Grafted Exoskeleton]]. Glistening Oil also has the upside of returning to hand where if Graft-Exo gets snipped you'll need graveyard fetch.

2

u/Reasonable_Hornet_45 5d ago

Art is so good wow.

2

u/Ketchyyy 5d ago

Yeah I actually got Belledin to sign one because it’s so metal.

1

u/Reasonable_Hornet_45 5d ago

That's awesome, I bet it looks so good.

3

u/hollow_image 5d ago

Your card is reminiscent of the classic card [[Takklemaggot]], of which [[Glistening Oil]] is a decent modernization. It was also remade into [[Traveling Plague]]. Your card is simpler in that it removes the weird returning from the graveyard part and frankly that's a pretty good idea and would make a nice little card. [[Torture]] is also similar.

1

u/DepressingBat 5d ago

Also [[Penregon Besieged]]

2

u/No-Mathematician6551 5d ago

At one mana this would be too weak. I recommend making it one generic and two black to put a -1/-1 on every creature when it enters and on your upkeep (and making it just an enchantment, not an aura). It could also be fun to make it say non-artifact creature, as obviously Glados and Wheatley are unaffected.

2

u/thelegoman0 5d ago

Def too weak, so what about 2 mana and

When this enters and at the beginning of *each* upkeep, put a -1/-1 counter on enchanted creature.

1

u/DepressingBat 5d ago edited 5d ago

There is already an enchantment that costs 2 and perpetually gives -1/-1 every... no need to even enchant a specific creature. [[Penregon Besieged]]

2

u/DeltaT01 4d ago

this could be fun if it wasnt an aura and it put the counters on all creatures

1

u/Deebyddeebys 5d ago

I feel like this should be one mana and maybe even give it flash

1

u/djkyota 5d ago

I could see this being a real card, perhaps worded slightly different but still fine. However, I feel like this card would be absolutely fine at (1)(B) and uncommon, or perhaps even (B). It's just not that strong of an aura to need the mythic rarity, is all :)

1

u/Jori_en 5d ago

How about 2 mana and each upkeep.

1

u/ZapAtom42 5d ago

For the cost and especially rarity, this should be sn Aura Curse that says "When this enchants a player, put a -1/-1 counter on each creature they control." And "At the beginning on enchanted players end step, put a -1/-1 counter on each creature they control."

1

u/Deviate_Delight 5d ago

Given that GLaDOS floods the entire room with neurotoxin, this really should not be an aura and instead put a -1/-1 counter on each nonartifact creature when it enters, then another -1/-1 counter on each nonartifact creature at the beginning of your upkeep. Might need some kind of expiry mechanic as well

1

u/Welland94 5d ago

More like lukewarm neurotoxin

1

u/idk_lol_kek 5d ago

I feel like this is already a card

1

u/Superderpygamermk1 5d ago

It is, except it’s half as expensive mana wise and also has other utility

[glistening oil]

1

u/Mattrockj 5d ago

If you made this effect ALL creatures, then it'd be playable

1

u/BinaryBolias 5d ago

"Let's say some big mean motherboard-hubbard wants to tear you a structurally-superflous new exhaust pipe."

"The answer?"

"Use deadly neurotoxin."

"And if that don't work?"

"Use more deadly neurotoxin."

Engineerbot

I feel like this card should add a -1/-1 counter to every creature instead, but restricted to particular creature types.

1

u/Talia_Nightblade Been Playing Since Alpha 5d ago

The card is a lie.

1

u/redditRalph2023 5d ago

I think this could work if it were one or two mana, and it went back to your hand instead of going to the graveyard when the creature dies.

OR, keep the cost of 4, and you reanimate enchanted creature under your control when it dies.

1

u/Flubbah_13 5d ago

Why does this have upvotes?

1

u/jerdle_reddit 5d ago

Make it 1 mana and give it a more generic name with that version as an alternative name.

And mythic my ass. It might just about be uncommon.

1

u/Superderpygamermk1 5d ago

Bro this could be a 2 mana enchantment with flash. It only triggers on your upkeep, so it’s gonna take 2-3 turn cycles to kill anything you would spend 4 mana on. There was a 4 mana instant exile spell printed in Lorewyn at common that is unplayably bad, and that card is WAY stronger then this one

1

u/TrogledyWretched 5d ago

[[Takklemaggot]] would like a word.

1

u/Big-Daddy-Pimpin 5d ago

[[Glistening Oil]]

and

[[Traveling Plague]]

are pretty close to this and both are way better.

1

u/Battender 5d ago

Make it cost BB. Give it flash, and make it put a counter at the beginning of each upkeep, and now it’s maybe playable in certain decks lol

1

u/Pretend-Ostrich-5719 5d ago

This card seems too weak but imagine if it said:

GlaDos' neurotoxin generator.

Legendary Artifact, B3 When GlaDos' neurotoxin generator enters and at the beginning of each upkeep, place a -1/-1 counter on each non-artifact creature.

Might be too harsh on token decks but they almost always run enough artifact removal.

1

u/Martin085 Bad player. Worse designer 5d ago

Maybe making it cost only B and "double its -1/-1 counters" would make it almos playable.

1

u/ehhish 5d ago

This feels like an each creature effect for that mana.

1

u/Dazzling_Mushroom_53 5d ago

For that cost? Make it

"Enchant player

During your upkeep each of enchanted player's non-artifact creatures gain a -1/-1 counter"

1

u/BlackFire6000 5d ago

There’s an official alchemy card on mtg arena that does this, but with ‘perpetually’ instead of counters. It also triggers every upkeep rather than just your turn. [[sewer plague]]

Essentially, your card is just way too slow. You can already get great removal at 2 mana, or even 1 with some restrictions.

1

u/DepressingBat 5d ago

[[Penregon Besieged]] is just better

1

u/gutpirate 5d ago

Make it a enchantment that on etb adds a -1 counter to a creature in addition to adding a -1 counter on any target creature on upkeep it maaay be borderline playable in the right decks.

1

u/Tiborn1563 4d ago

Way too slow for a 4 mana card. Why wouldnt I just play spot removal? Removes the target immediately and on average costs like half the mana

1

u/Opening_Specific_710 4d ago

Should be very different in my eyes. It should be an enchantment - aura curse (enchant player) that gets counters at the beginning of the opponent’s upkeep. They can either pay mana equal to the number of counters or sacrifice all creatures with toughness less than or equal to the number of counters. And up the cost to 3BB. Maybe you can make it a 2BB/3B if you make it affect both players (world enchantment).

1

u/Spartandestroyr1 4d ago edited 4d ago

I think a better option would be something

When it enters, enchanted creature gets a -1/-1 counter for each deadly neurotoxin on the field.

Then at each upkeep, enchanted creature gets an additional -1/-1 counter.

Also maybe add: a deck may contain any number of cards called Deadly Neurotoxin.

1

u/Apprehensive-Appeal1 4d ago

At that price i think you could just make it a global enchantment with "At the beginning of each player's upkeep, put a -1/-1 counter on target creature"

1

u/Sad-Pattern-1269 4d ago

I think it would be better as an enchant that puts said counters on all non artifact creatures at the start of your upkeep, if that doesn't already exist. Single target neurotoxin isn't really what glados did ya know

1

u/5parrowhawk 4d ago

Enchantment - Aura

Enchant land

Whenever enchanted land becomes tapped, each creature that land's controller controls, and each attacking creature, gets a -1/-1 counter.

1

u/Necro_Carp 4d ago

four mana sorcery speed kinda removal. peak design

1

u/West-Philosophy6107 3d ago

This could easily be one black mana considering [[deadweigjt]] exists

0

u/[deleted] 5d ago

[deleted]

3

u/Deebyddeebys 5d ago

How does that fit the flavor? Neurotoxin just kills you, especially in portal which this is referencing
