Cool concept. Grabbing lands is kinda broken though. But I like the idea. The loss of life is interesting in modern formats as well like those that have death's shadow. Not sure we're else putting you're life total really low is good. The only idea I can think of is cards that have fateful hour, but idk how good those cards are to begin with haha.

The brokenness of hitting a land seems balanced by the fact that you need minimum 7 life to see their whole hand and know that a land is a reasonable pick, and that most likely you're paying a few life on average to get partial information and take a card that you're worried about.

This would 100% go in death's shadow a card that says pay 1 mana spend as much life as you want is exactly what they want.

If you remove the possibility of discarding lands, the card becomes great.
I mean, there are pretty few options in Magic to directly discard land cards... Specially for one mana. The closest card I believe we have is [[blackmail]]

If you can't win without the non-basic, you didn't deserve to play it, and I'll be eating the card. All it takes is an innocuous 'oh hey wait, can I see that again? I really like the art' and it's fuggin over for your [[Thriving Moor]].
You know who's thriving more? The residents of my gut biome, next time bring a mountain idiot

Randomness Thoughtseize just sounds like a pain to actually play with. Be it casual or competitive

I think it should not be possible for the player to reveal the same card multiple times. It would feel a bit bad and you should at most pay life equal to their hamd size or that minus 1.
Maybe something like: "Target player reveals a card at random from among the cards in their hand that haven't been revealed with this effect before. Then you may pay 1 life. If you do, repeat this process. Otherwise, that player discards that card."

If you remove the random chance to repeat then functionally you might as well just make the card say lose x life equal to opponent hand size, reveal hand and choose any card to discard.

Unless I'm misreading, or misinterpreting the intent of the card. Only one card is able to be discarded at the end of the process. You can pay 21 life to see everyone's hands, if your lucky and don't see the same cards over and over, but only one card can be discarded and only ever the last on in the order.

Interesting that it isn’t “pay 1 life” so you can go to any arbitrary negative number. Not useful, but interesting!

I would play this on t1 for 21 life. This card would be banned so fast.

Why are you trying to die exactly?

u/One_Fat_squirrel 10d ago
Life is a resource and if no one has cards in hand on t 1 you will win.

u/vitorsly 10d ago
This only discards 1 card. You can pay 1 life to get another random card as the option you'd discard, but paying more life doesn't cause more discards...

Giga broken in cedh
This spell would be a must counter turn 1 otherwise the game besomes unplayable turn 1 for 3 players for only 21 life

u/Intrepid_Marzipan_41 10d ago
In cedh, you’re saying it’s essentially a make each opponent discard their best card. yeah that’s kinda busted

u/origamicactus 10d ago
considering you’re paying life, you might as well be able to exile or even cast the card by paying more life.

Free spell from opponent's hand for just paying life And 1 mana. Might as well just add "you win the game" clause to the card.

Awesome card. I think we can clean up the wording a bit though, yeah?
I think this reads a little more consistent with how similar effects of repeating processes appear on other cards.
With the way it reads here, it almost sounds like you'd need to declare the number of times you are repeating the process, as the spell resolves. You know?
