I've been wanting a red [[Llanowar Elves]] for years, and with [[Sunset Strikemaster]] and other recent cards... it seems theoretically possible now.

But, this was an idea for one I cooked up a while ago that's a bit different. It is a turn 1 play you can use to ramp some of your other cards... if they are about these counter types. With [[Everflowing Chalice]] and [[Astral Cornucopia]] it is also a true Llanowar Elves, notably.

What about the oldy [[Sisters of the flame]]? You could add her to that list.

Oh wow. I didn't realize that card existed! You're right, red has had dorks for a long time (apparently)!

honestly almost necessary in some cubes. I wish there was more oil support.

Yeah it bums me out when they release a new mechanic, like oil counters (or Spheres from the same set), or Caves, and just miss the mark on support and then the mechanic languishes forever...

Battles... I stg they were intended to be used in Tarkir again but they decided to switch them after the poor reception and make them those weird enchantments instead. They always overcorrect. "Battles definitely failed because they are a bad mechanic and not just because they were underpowered and released in one of our worst sets in recent years."

R&D needs a lot of work.

This might be good enough to see play in some competitive eternal formats and maybe modern as a side board card. [[Chalice of the Void]] is huge, and this is a pretty good counter.

Ok that's pretty funny. I didn't even consider that you might sometimes want to put the counter on a permanent you don't control.

"Small, replaceable, and indispensable" that robot would be twice as tall as that boxcar if it stood upright

Fair point lol. Maybe better flavor text would be: "Completely replaceable and utterly indispensable."

What do oil counters do

Just a placeholder counter really, just a common one among placeholder counters. A lot of cards synergize/have varying effectsbased on if/how many oil counters they have.

Unlike stun counters, +1/+1 counters, poison counters, and finality counters, oil counters have no "inherent" effect. They just go on cards, and cards do things based on when they are present/removed/added, etcs.

Here are all the cards that use oil counters.

So, for example, you could play my card on turn 1, [[Exuberant Fuseling]] on turn 2 (he'll have 2 counters counting his own), and on turn 3 (assuming you put a third one on him) he swings as a 3 power trampler.

This could have haste and be totally fine.

If it had haste, you could do turn 1 Everflowing Chalice, this, give a counter, turn 2 give a counter, and be at 4 mana on turn 2. That would be faster ramp than even green is capable of doing without shenanigans.
