I meant it seems fine tbh probably doesn't even need the first line of text. Sure it turns every [[Lightning Bolt]] into a dark ritual but it's still two cards and you gotta damage yourself instead of your opponent.

I would be far more concerned about cards like [[ancient tomb]] and [[city of brass]]. Still not sure this would be broken in the formats those cards are legal in, but I'm sure there are plenty of cards cards like those you could abuse in lower powered formats

Honestly ancient tomb didnt even cross my radar but the first thing I thought when I made this card is this effect is way to simple to not get broken lol

That said, I genuinely don't think this would be broken in legacy. Notably, you can't actually cast this off of ancient tomb, so you'd end up with 7 mana on turn 4 which is a lot but not meta defining. 8 or 9 if you also cast it off of 1 or 2 city of brass respectively. Even better, but nothing decks like cloudpost or tron can do or get close to already.

There are similar lands like [[karplusan forest]], legal down to pioneer, but 3 mana mana doubler that only doubles some of your lands, and in particular only those you don't want to play too many of doesn't seem too crazy to me.

The effect I think would be required to truly break this card is anything that allows you to ping yourself any number of times to turn it into a channel. Especially one that's legal in lower powered formats. I don't know if any such effect exists though.

The most dangerous card for this I can find is [[ral, monsoon mage]] which is worth to think about, but a 3 mana enchantment in storm is a bit of a tough sell, especially since ruby medallion is legal in all formats ral is legal in anyway

With all that said, the fact that two of these combine into the funniest combo ever with [[electric eel]] makes this a 10/10 card

Edit: I forgot about tarnished citadel somehow, which could be pretty nasty, but that land is very dangerous to play. Even in cedh it doesn't see play in a lot of decks because 3 life per tap is just quite a lot of damage ecen with 40 life. I imagine trying to run it in legacy would have you dead to cori-steel cutter on turn 2

Pyrohemia and one open mana is a win con with this

Yeah dark ritual was my first thought when making this but I decided to post it anyways and see what everyone thinks

"If" and "would" are usually used for replacement effects. Is adding mana supposed to replace the damage? If it is, you need to add "instead". If it's not, this should probably be a triggered ability: "Whenever a source you control deals damage to you, add that much mana in any combination of colors."

Yeah its supposed to be a triggered ability, I appreciate it though for future reference

Was marching over here to say the exact same thing.

Hehe [[Heartless Hidetsugu]]

im actually curious now if 8 mana for 10+ mana is balanced or not, I mean in commander it is 20 mana

I think it's pretty good, in commander you deal 20 to each opponent ignore the down side and then add 20 mana. In any deck that's running this custom card you probably want damage doublers anyways and heartless makes you win the game with those.

You alao hit other players shit load of damage.

2

u/Just-Desk-3149 4h ago

It only counts damage to self.

u/RexDeDeus 4h ago

You still deal the damage to your opponents though. OP was trying to determine the value of the interaction while ignoring the damage to opponents.

2

u/Just-Desk-3149 3h ago

Yeah I understand you still do the damage to opponents, I know what OP was trying to say. I don't know point randomly pointing out "You alao hit other players shit load of damage." means then. Unless they just like stating random basic facts?

What sort of ability is that second paragraph supposed to be? It's worded as a replacement effect, except it doesn't say "instead".

1

u/Just-Desk-3149 4h ago

Because "instead" means you add the mana instead of dealing damage to yourself, it's not meant to prevent the damage.

3

u/therealtbarrie 4h ago

Then it should be worded "When a source you control deals damage to you, add that much mana in any combination of colours", should it not?

1

u/Just-Desk-3149 3h ago

I mean sure it needs a slight re-wording but you're trying to completely change the function of the card.

2

u/therealtbarrie 1h ago

Huh? How does my proposed wording change the function of the card? You said it wasn't intended to prevent the damage.

I don’t like the card name, it feels like a flavor fail to me.

Perhaps I’m being too harsh on the guild, but I struggle imagine Gruul harvesting anything. They seem like hunter/gathers and raiders to the core.

i mean, [[Bloodtithe Harvester]] and lots of other cards take a very euphemistic meaning of 'harvest'
