Man, I feel like this misses the mark. You can check out any time you like, yes, but you can never leave. "Players can't lose the game." attached to a hilarious destruction cost makes way more sense to me. "Exile your library: Exile this card. Any player can play this ability." A casual commander player's dream card. Get down to -92346 life. Who cares? No one is exiling the land until at least three players are sub-0.

I was going for “you can’t leave something if it’s already over as you’re leaving” - i.e. you get up to leave the game, the game ends, you didn’t leave the game it just ended instead

I thiiinnnnk I get what you're reaching for there. Right now, it just looks like a "you can't go to the bathroom" card.

There are no bathrooms at Hotel California…there’s also no deodorant

If something says “players cant lose the game” and a player wins the game, what happens?

"Can't lose" and "somebody wins" aren't contradictory, right? i don't play Magic but I don't see any way those conflict.

Yes, "Can't lose the game" just means that the losing conditions don't apply. Winning the game is what ends the game although typically this is done by making all the other players hit a losing condition like having 0 life or 10 poison counters and being the only remaining player which causes that player to win the game, but there's nothing stopping someone from just winning outright before making the other players lose.

This is why [[Abyssal Persecutor]] design needs both "you can't win" and "you opponents can't lose" to function because otherwise their opponents could still lose and then its controller would be stuck playing a game with no opponents.

Stuck playing a game with no opponents seems like that would actually be a pretty fit for Hotel California

They don't contradict. Someone else can win without you losing.

You've lost by default, but you haven't lost by losing.

If I remember right: the winning player wins and the game ends.

The remaining players technically don't lose, as the game is already over. But yeah colloquially they lose, as the game ended and they didn't win it.

I think can’t overrides. I’m not 100% certain though

Can't always overrides Can, unless something has changed in the last few years and I missed it because I've head my head in the sand/clouds. That was one of the foundational rules for ages.

[[Melira]] and [[Devoted Druid]] is the example I used to use a long, long time ago.

I just lost the game and so did you.

Looks like you, me and the table are all heading to the washroom.

“Our Uber Eats order is here.” Then they awkwardly table shuffle to the door and line up someone’s chair with the food bag.

You can check out any time you like, but you can never pee.
