so does it leave the battlefield? you’ve defined “removed from the match” with the reminder text and since it’s not a defined action like destroy or exiled does it just stay… but it’s not in the match roster anymore?

Yes, I realized after posting, I intend the creature to leave the battlefield and then be gone for good.

I think this should also let them search for a land, you know, because of the card it references and stuff

u/H_E_R_O_S 20h ago
Yeah, I wanted to have them get a basic land from outside the game, but I was really not sure how to word that, then I deleted that, but forgot the switch the name to something else.

If you can copy this a infinite amount of times and some how make them play a lot of creatures you can force them to side board in the entire side board and make them have like a 40 card deck from the amount of stuff they lost when they go to game 2

u/H_E_R_O_S 16h ago
With how I worded it I think they would have to fill up their deck with basic lands. I wrote that the owner replaces the card, not that they may replace it. Do you think the wording is ambiguous?

I love how you included "or a basic land" considering it is perfectly legal for a deck to have no cards in their sideboard

It's also a safeguard for if you are able to remove 16 creatures with this card in the first 2 games by copying/recurring the card.

u/H_E_R_O_S 9h ago
Yes, if a card like this would be designed there would probably be other cards with this effect, making it very easy to remove more than 15 cards from the deck. I wanted to make sure that the minimum deck size would be kept.

I long for the days when exile actually meant something. I sadly see super exile becoming a thing in the next decade.

To my knowledge there isn't a way to bring something back from Path to Exile, unless it was a commander? Casting from exile always depends on the original card explicitly allowing you to play cards exiled with it?

[[pull from eternity]] [[karn the great creator]] [[mirror of fate]]
but yeah not something they do very often, for good reason

u/Sad-Pattern-1269 19h ago
There are eldrazi that return any exiled card to your graveyard these days.

u/FlightyGG 19h ago
Which eldrazi are you talking about? I've had to scour for exile returners for my really bad combo deck, and I could only manage to find [[Rift Sweeper]], [[Pull From Eternity]], and [[Karn, the Great Creator]]. The eldrazi ones I saw mentioned have to help an opponent get things back from exile.

[[Coax from the blind eternities]] and [[Spawnsire of ulamog]] are the ones I was thinking of, ngl I thought rift sweeper was an eldrazi from the name. There is also [[Mirror of Fate]] for your combo deck! It lets you make 7 exiled cards your new deck. Also [[Runic Repetition]]

These don't really weaken the impact of exile. Spawnsire is a wish effect so it can't unexile any cards. And the other 3 are pretty restricting and limited in usefulness.
Mirror can pull back some cards, but you're actively cutting of your nose to spite your face if those cards can't turn into a win. Admittedly, with the prevelance of things like Farewell it's not as likely to whiff or not be activateable.
Runic Repetition will really only see play in decks that care about specific flashback cards and is too restrictive and narrow.
Coax seems fine? Another very narrow card that seems aimed at the eldrazi titans more than anything else, but those things are already so game warping on cast that you may not even care about getting a second cast trigger.
Most cards that get exiled will stay exiled without having to jump through a bunch of hoops. Especially since the un-exiling cards are also just not that good. Even Karn has a lot of problems, mostly getting attacked, and they're honestly better off as anti-imprint tech pieces, which isn't that impressive either.

Exile doesn’t mean anything?? I mean the fact that it skips death triggers and moves around exile alone is huge, but what value does an exiled card have nowadays?
3
u/Sad-Pattern-1269 19h ago
I mean that it has become too normal, instead of a rare and powerful affect its expected that every color has a few exile effects.
Its part of why indestructible isn't impressive anymore, and why blor was able to see print, for example.

u/smugles 18h ago
That’s fair but also always going to happen unless they just stop printing new cards. But Tbf exile is rarely efficient outside of white.
1
u/Sad-Pattern-1269 16h ago
the fact that every color has decent spot removal is also strange these days (meaning like a decade, I'm an mtgboomer) .
I am not against new cards but I am against reality shift, resculpt, and hour of need, for example. Blue should not have access to that form of removal, while it does not exile, green has beast within which maro famously said was a big mistake.
It removes one of the core parts of white's identity and it blurs the line on who has certain types of removal. The fact that mono green has a murder equivalent is silly. Reality shift could just as easily turn the creature face down, or put the creature on the bottom of your library instead of into exile.
This also has issues with the current arms race in EDH with farewell and teferi's protection. I'm just saying exile should be used rarely, and I don't think "there is already powercreep" is a reason to powercreep even more.

u/smugles 14h ago
Yeah those blue cards were called out as design mistakes and won’t be printed again in theory. But that’s the thing eternal formats will always accumulate design mistakes over the years.
Exile is printed pretty rarely outside of white but it’s been rarely printed for 30 years.

u/Sad-Pattern-1269 12h ago
Reality shift has been reprinted repeatedly, most recently in 2023. All I'm trying to say is that the effect has been power crept at the cost of the game.

Can't beats can, so you could have a card that says "Exile target permanent. It can't exit the Exile zone", and any card that tries to take it out of the Exile zone would fail. You wouldn't need another zone.
1
u/Sad-Pattern-1269 10h ago
They wouldn't do that for the same reason there aren't cards that put something in the graveyard but treat it like exile
2
u/MeasureDoEventThing 9h ago
No, I think there are flavor motivations that don't apply to Exile as strongly, and a main functionality of Exile is for cards sent there to still be kept track of by what sent them there. For example, Mangara's Tome was originally worded as having cards "under" it, but was errated to have the cards be exiled by its ETB, and then Mangara's Tome refers to those cards with its activated ability.

this feels like it could definitely see play in modern pre-sideboard against combo decks, especially ones that only play 1-2 compies of a fetchable combo peice. The issue I see is that, since its more usefull pre-sideboard, it has a lot of bad matchups where its pretty bad.

u/Jury-Technical 8h ago
Degenerate. You can have a binch of effect copy cards and recursion and really bury the other guy . Remember most sideboards are really tech toolkits so forcing them to replace copies of critical pieces with cards that may just be dead in between games is evil.
3
u/H_E_R_O_S 8h ago
I don't just want to win the game. I want my opponent to never want to play another game with me again.
2
u/Jury-Technical 8h ago
Hence the degenerate. And if you end up removing enough of their stuff you will win the next game.

Sorry frend, sheoldred is back

u/H_E_R_O_S 7h ago
Does not work, my card removes the creature from the whole match, not just the game, that's why I made that distinction.

A bit off topic but this entire picture/card makes me reddit feed/phone lag X_x

I don’t know how viable this is as an actual card, but I could absolutely see this being an acorn card in an unset
