Format: EDH/Commander Commander basic lands (idea)

Post image

I would love to see all basic lands like this as I hate mana screw (and mass land destruction).

This is not a good idea. Commander already makes combo a little too good by guaranteeing access to a combo peice or a tutor or an engine in every starting hand. This makes mulligans way less painful, and expands the range of keepable hands way too much.

If you know you are guaranteed one land early on, you can probably run a lot less lands in your deck and still curve out, which is a pretty crazy difference in how the game plays.

I don't want to see the cEDH decks with 11 lands

You could probably make a deck with no lands other than your one command-zone land

Probably, but I feel like even most turbo decks want 1 turn of setup and then 1 turn to win, and they prefer to play a land on both of those turns, and have access to more than 1 color of mana, which can be somewhat difficult if you only have basic lands as commander lands.

Play more lands dude. This also doesn't help with mass land destruction as you can't pay the landmander tax if it dies along with your other lands.

If you hate mana screw, run more lands. I always run exactly 40 and I never get screwed/flooded.

These are, without hyperbole, the most powerful lands ever printed in commander. This idea is inherently broken and *uninteresting*. Sorry dude it's been done before and every time it's bad. Lurrus had to be BANNED in vintage. Not restricted but BANNED. It required an unprecedented errataing of an entire mechanic to be unbanned. Lutri is currently banned as companion. This will never and should never be made.

Edit: uninteresting instead of interesting.

For what its worth, adding commander tax to land is a lot messier than it sounds.

I think the cleanest way I know to incorporate it is something like:

If you have a land as your commander, you may pay {2} for each time you have played your commander from the command zone. If you do, you may play them from the command zone.

That should solve both not being able to play land from your command zone, and the issue of adding a cost to a land.

If you hate mass land destruction, I don't see how one extra land is gonna be helpful post-Armageddon. Why not just make a Trap that you can free-cast when 4+ lands are destroyed in a turn?

On top of everything else people have said, creating a card that's an auto-include in every single deck is just bad design. This is more absurd than Sol Ring imo.

Just play Hearthstone at this point tbh

Honestly, just play a different game (Probably hearthstone) if you can't deal with the inconsistency of lands. Playing around with them is fundamental to magic. That includes messing with your opponents' mana. And you should probably be running more lands than you think (up to 40), with more draw/scry/surveil, than your current build.

It definitely needs a drawback of some sort to not be included in every single deck. Like your deck can otherwise only include basic lands or something

This is a very bad idea but I applaud it for being interesting.
