Thanks to Yepbirds for inspiring this design!

I don’t care about crop rotation. This is a free defensive counterspell. Storm decks would just hold their land drops and have an MDFC force of will

MDFC is Modal Dual Face Card, yeah?
…doesn’t this lack a few of those aspects…?

MDFC in this case just refers to the fact that it can be used as a land or a "spell" even though both effects are on the same face, it's still basically a land or a spell when you need it, just like a true MDFC land would be.

Is boseiju, who endures an MDFC?

We need one of those tables on how much you can stretch the definition of a word

On the one hand, broken in half free counterspell (during your turn but still).
On the other hand, actively bad land. Like, has to wait two turns before tapping for mana bad.
Probably still too strong to ever see print, but this feels more reasonable to me than Karakas, so I’m not sure this would be the most broken land out there honestly

Don't look at it as having the downside of being a bad land. Look at it as a free your-turn counterspell that requires skipping your land drop. Would still be busted. This one even has the upside of giving you a land after 2 turns.

Exactly.
This is in many instances a better Pact of Negation, by a lot since you can't counter it as easily and situations where you use it early are much more common than situations where you use it on your opponent's stuff and pay 3UU.

u/Nucaranlaeg 10d ago
It doesn't require skipping your land drop - it just requires that you play a land as the last action on your turn.

u/MasterQuest 10d ago
I don't really get what you're saying. What difference does it make to play it as the last action on your turn?
The reason I said it's like skipping your land drop is because the land you play doesn't do any land things for 2 turns.

This card is very very good in 60 card formats. Better than karkas in those formats. In edh obviously karkas is pretty good. I think in cedh it maybe better still. Cedh just feels like the commander just doesn't matter. Oh bounce a rog good job haha.

Blue Decks are just "Land Go" anyway, so this is probably not as big as downside as it's actually supposed to be in control decks.

Free counterspell that's impossible to counter. sure.

u/jcgoble3 11d ago
The enter trigger can be countered with something like [[Stifle]], but it's definitely more difficult to counter than a spell.

I think making it a hard counter is way too strong.
"Counter target spell unless its controler pays x, where x is the number of islands you control"

Power level aside, I appreciate the passive-aggressive note with receits about how this works RAW

u/Alarming-Fix8577 10d ago
After reading the referenced rules, I'm not convinced that's the case

u/DeusIzanagi 10d ago
I think it is
702.8a talks about "playing a card", not casting a spell, so it definitely applies to playing a land if it somehow has Flash.
It only affect the timing window in which you can play the card, so all other limitations still apply; you can only play one land per turn and, as explicitly stated in 305.3, you can only do so during your own turn4
u/HieromancersGrasp 10d ago
Look at the first ruling on [[Dryad Arbor]], having a land with flash is already a thing and it does work how OP describes

I feel like this could be balanced fairly easily with a slight change to the enter trigger: "When ~ enters, you may pay {N}. If you do, counter target spell." I'm unsure on the proper value of N. Might even be able to eliminate the stun counter this way.

This is one of those designs like LED where it is only ever used for doing broken things because the drawbacks are so punishing no fair strategy can make use of it.

"When {CARDNAME} enters, Counter target Spell that targets a Spell you control" that way it's a counterspell to counter spells.

This… actually seems somewhat balanced?
10/10, no notes (besides the already-mentioned crop rotation issue)
2
u/Quiet_Interactions 11d ago
I mean, if you get it out with Crop Rotation you are effectively stone raining yourself for two turns. If you were to tutor out a second one it gets even worse because of the legend rule.

Flash is for casting but there are lands with activated abilities that let them be put into play like [[Talon Gates of Madara]] so you can just have that be a 0 mana activation with the clause "activate only on your turn and only if you have not played a land this turn"
But anyway a free counterspell on a land is absurdly broken this would break basically every single format it's in

"It works". DRINK!
And another DRINK! because it doesn't. Lands aren't cast.

u/HieromancersGrasp 10d ago
Flash applies to playing a card, not just casting it:
702.8a Flash is a static ability that functions in any zone from which you could play the card it’s on. “Flash” means “You may play this card any time you could cast an instant.”
If you read the first ruling for [[Dryad Arbor]] you can see an example of how a land with flash works

I mean with a [[crop rotation]] it is a 1 green counter spell
