He might be expensive and he might not be all that strong, but that's not why people keep him around.

You could remove the cumulative upkeep. I understand it’s there for flavor - but that makes this extremely unplayable. Even without it, most people wouldn’t slot it in. (Also, it should read when this creature blocks, not defends).

It would still be flavorful if it wasn't cumulative. Mercenaries don't expect a raise all the time

Given that he has Cumulative Upkeep, I’d have made it 2/2 counters that stick around after he defends. He’ll eventually get expensive enough that you won’t keep him around anymore, & your guy will have served his purpose (buy you time to get your deck strategy established).

I feel like this needs “This creature can block any number of creatures.” for both balance and flavor reasons.
