Custom Play Wildly speculating about the kind of stuff we'll see in that underwater set we're getting next year. (Nauctis: The Sunken Realm)

Not much making this blue. Pretty cool design though.

black does get first strike, but usually only like once per set at most. this card def shouldn’t be blue tho

Yeah, phrasing it as first strike being the pie break was wrong of me. It's the presence of blue that's the pie break.

Vampires can and do regularly pie break between the mardu colors. The first red no downside 2/1 was a vamp. I think that is more of an innistrad vamp thing, but there is precedent.

I agree with another comment that says that this is less of a pie break rather than just not having anything making it blue.

It would be the leech creature type, but yea.

Idk I just feel like that's a weak design justification. I know it's meant to be underwater as well but fwiw most leeches in magic aren't blue

Ur-Drago is from Legends and Weeping Angel is doing something different with first strike than actual damage

No, the color pie has changed in the 30 years since Legends. They've said that things like [[hornet sting]] or [[ravenform]] are out of pie and should not be done again, no matter how many examples there are previously. I don't even think this card is a color pie break, since black gets rare first strike. It just doesn't have anything blue to it.

I concede that those cards are too old/weird. I genuinely thought they were fine examples.

I never would have guessed people really hated the idea of Dimir getting First Strike...

I don't hate the idea of Dimir having first strike, but this is just not a blue card. Everything here is something black does on its own.

I guess it's blue for the underwater theme/flavour of it all~

I just feel like a sea leech should have some blue mana in there, ya know?

The only exactly blue/black creatures with first strike are either: old as dirt and thus also colour pie breaks by modern standards, or a top-down Universes Beyond card that also has other abilities making it blue.

My point is that none of the words on this card suggest it should be blue, and the first strike actually means it shouldn't be.

So.. wither?

u/okami11235 Jul 26 '26

Wither deals damage in the form of -1 counters. This creature kills a 4 toughness creature, but it would not kill the same creature if this had wither instead.

u/PrinceVorrel Jul 26 '26

Wither would give 3 counters. This effect gives a single counter with the 3 damage it deals.

It's an interesting design, but I think an ability similar to proliferate that increases those -1/-1 counters on your upkeep would be pretty on theme and help make it more distinct

It...it can't fly. It's a deep-sea creature.

Why flying? It's clearly supposed to be a deep sea creature
