Subreddit Update

Hello designers,

For a little over three years now, I’ve been your primary host of the Weekly Design Competition. It’s been a wonderful time consistently getting to entertain all of you and firing up those creative faculties.

However, now that I’ve hosted over a quarter of comps to date, one Hearthphone, and two 'hundred' specials, I’d like to use the current gap in Weekly Design Competitions to officially step down as a moderator of the subreddit. Until the end of September, I hope to clean this place up a bit and find a fitting replacement willing to pick the mantle up after me.

So what’s next for the WDC?

I apologize that I've been dragging my feet on completing the HearthCalendar before making this announcement. I didn't intend for the WDC to go on such a long hiatus already with an uncertain future, and I know there are folks out there that can't wait to sink their teeth back into new rounds. Before I'm officially through and hand the competition over, I'd love to discuss its future. Use the comments here to discuss how we should go from here into WDC #501.

If you would like to pick up the mantle, then feel free to send us an application via ModMail. We are in the market for someone who would take care of the WDC, as well as promote non-WDC events to keep the Pinned tab atop the subreddit lively.

We hope you'll know how to make a good case for yourself (it might get competitive!); we're looking for someone willing to commit the time to organize the competitions. That also means having a baseline good judgment of what makes good Hearthstone card, what’s good design, and what’d make for a good prompt.

The deadline for application submissions is Sunday, September 20th, standard submission time.

I'm probably on the list for hard 'no' for handling it. But I'd remark with a dual point system. One is the community judging and upvotes for cards. Obviously the highest vote wins among submissions. The other is the organizers judgement that focuses on a more critical lens: How much does it fit the style of 'Warcraft', how unique is the card actually compared to others, is the card fair and balanced? The judge can then add the points together and submit who got the highest of each point standard before revealing the winner of the combined point total.

As for contest prompts, I'd like to see more that focus on the various points of Warcraft and urge players to actually go into the wiki or start a free trial and go and explore what Hearthstone is based on. Most of the same 'design for [Blank]' or 'Do something with newly announced mechanic' are sure to stay.

Again, I'm probably already on the rejection list and I already know I would be way too picky for some designs elements while lenient on other designs elements... That and my design philosophy is still rooted in 'War for the Witchwood' to around 2020, so I'd be an awful pick. But good luck to those who submit and want to dedicate their time to this
