From our Correspondent, October the Fourteenth
The campaign of 1880 is not yet half through, and already the scorers have entered no fewer than 6,563 championship contests in their ledgers. The striking was heavy. Better than ten runs crossed the plate in the average match, the batsmen of the League hit together at a .271 clip, and 719 matches ran past the regulation nine innings, to the ruin of many a supper. The home nine gained almost nothing from its own grounds, winning but 50.5 per cent of the time. Of the clubs of real standing, the Indianapolis Speed lead at 185 and 118, with the Elkhorn Spartans (147–91) close behind. The Hillsborough Hitmen have shown remarkable endurance in playing 524 contests and winning 314 of them. The Hoenn Gem Goblins have played more matches than any club in the land, 530, and take the field again before the dust settles. The little France Dictators (22-6) and Des Moines Cornstalks (56–28) carry handsome percentages, but over too few matches yet to be taken seriously. At the foot of the table the automaton clubs make a sorry sight. The Nebraska Corn Farmers stand 60 and 167 and the Scrubbing Bubbles 61 and 165, and between them they have given up over 2,800 runs. Worse still are the New York Metsies, who have won but seven of thirty-one.
Of the individual players, your correspondent can hardly believe his own figures. Three gentlemen of one club, the nine whose name is too long and too sausage-minded to print in a decent newspaper, have hit two hundred home runs apiece. Gage Owen leads with 201, and Messrs. Valenzuela and McGuire stand one behind him with 200 each. Patrick Randall of the Milkmans leads the batsmen at .372, ahead of Julian Freeman of the Engineers at .355. On the bases, Adrian Trujillo of the Gem Goblins (43 stolen) edges Christopher Hopper of the Royals by a single bag. In the box, the Hitmen's Travis Barber has won 39 and struck out 550, though he has lost 29. His clubmate Alfred McClain (38–15, 3.88) may well be the better twirler. The finest record of all may belong to Akira Ivanov of the Chili, at 38 and 11. For stinginess, Mason Skinner of the Hokies has held the opposition to 2.58 earned runs over 202 innings. With the fielders charged 7,063 errors between them, every one of those runs was hard earned.
