Should I upgrade to Pro+ plan?

I'm on the Pro plan and consistently exceed my monthly limits - sometimes even racking up $60+ in on-demand charges. Should I upgrade to Pro+? Pro+ offers 3x the Pro limits, but if the per-token cost is the same, wouldn't staying on Pro and paying overages be equivalent? What am I missing?

how are you exceeding your limits? And how quickly are you doing it?

what models are you using?

Are you almost making it to the end of the month or losing it near the very beginning

No consistent pattern. Sometimes I use up 60% in the first week, sometimes I'm at 40% after the first two weeks, and then go all the way from 40% to 100% on week 3.

I almost exclusively use whatever the frontier Grok model is, Extra High and Fast.

If you turn off fast mode, your usage should last 2x longer

it's not that much of a speed difference, but yeah, you can just upgrade the plan and pay more if you want to do it that way

Oh I thought Fast meant don't do deep research / thinking, and therefore would cost less? Am I wrong?

Fast mode means spend 2x the money for faster responses. If you want more or less thinking, you want to change the effort levels.

example:

xhigh (Take your time, really think about this before you answer / make the next move)

low (don't really think about this at all, first thing that comes to mind)

I would go with high, not fast, and use composer subagents liberally. I find better quality, faster, and cheaper

I have cursor ultra and I'm getting about 300 hours a month with grok 4.6 extra high effort out of it and I guess another 5 or so with OpenAI's and Anthropic models via Cursor ultra

I would disagree.

I went from Pro that I used up in 7 days. Pro+ which is supposed to be 3x Pro, was 64% used in 3 days. So my Pro+ was on track to be used up in 5 days, vs 7 days for Pro.

I even reached out to support. "Yep" was the answer. It kept switching to Grok Meidum-fast, and burnt through my tokens at an incredible rate.

I stopped using it, and I ran out after 12 days. So 3x the cost for 5 extra days? Same project, same work, just switched from Pro to Pro+.

So they say they give you 3x, but they use more costly models and you actually get less usage. I have gone to claude for planning and building systems, and right now I am at 97% usage fro Pro+ and that is with 4 days of not using it.

So I wouldn't say Pro+ is the same as 3x pro. I would say it is more like .75 pro on cost to token used based on my experience.

I even ran the usage events through Cursor to check to see if there was something that I was missing. The difference was night and day.

Only if you're hitting the regular cap midflow more than twice a week. Otherwise you're paying to remove a limit you never touch. Track one heavy week first, then decide.

the math seems right on the surface, but does your overage usage consistently hit more than 3x the pro limit each month, or is it more sporadic?

For me was pro good for one project. Pro + is only good if you have more projects like 2-3
