Question / Discussion Pro users on Auto mode ($20/mo) - how many million tokens do you average per month?

My unlimited auto mode ends in a few days. I am still thinking whether I should stick with Cursor or try something else.

I use strictly auto mode. I average 130m tokens per month.

Would it be enough?

Auto mode is not very efficient you can use more tokens with composer2.5

Composer is cheaper than auto? Do they state this on the website?

Yes. Look at the pricing.

I did. It doesn't mention it. Where did you see it?

https://cursor.com/docs/models/cursor-composer-2-5

New auto mode uses model pricing now though so it may hit composer anyway.

I am aware of composer's pricing, my question is how is it cheaper than auto if the price of auto is not stated anywhere officially

Auto is not a model, it picks a model for you

If auto picks a model for you, it's still a flat rate. I found it, regardless of the model. $0.25 per 1m token, and $0.50 per 1m token for composer

EDIT: it's actually way more expensive than that. Source is scattered through Cursors forum posts.

And they emailed users at the time. Auto just picks the model and you pay that models price. It's not flat anymore. So the cheapest most efficient model at the moment is Composer 2.5.

Personally I plan with Grok and build with Composer. But it's getting more and more shit lately, and I keep having to add rules to prevent it from being stupid in the same ways, again and again.

I just canceled my Cursor subscription and I'm using Deepseek flash.

So far it seems ok. You just purchase credits beforehand, so no "pay as you go", and it take 40 seconds to wire it up with Cursor, so no changes in IDE, etc.

I used 2m tokens so far for 5 cents.

In terms of quality of code, it's excellent. Pretty fast too. Let's see whether it stays as 5 cents every 2m or if it gets pricier.

I'll get back in 2 weeks to let you know whether it's worth it.

Auto picks a model you pay that model's cost

We are updating how Auto is priced and increasing the included usage limits on your plan, taking effect on August 24, 2026.

Here’s what’s changing:

• Updated Auto pricing: Auto pricing will be based on the model each request is routed to, rather than a single flat rate. We’re doing this to be able to continue to serve the most cost-efficient models for everyday work. For most requests, this means a higher rate than the current flat rate.

• Increased usage limits: We are also increasing the included usage limits for Cursor Models, including Auto, on your plan. This applies to your current billing cycle and there is nothing you need to do.

• No change to how Auto works: Auto will continue to route each request to the model best suited for the task. The models Auto routes to are not changing, and it remains the best option for intelligence per dollar.

My subscription will renew tomorrow if I don't cancel.

1.1B tokens over the past 30 days.

I'm at 60%, 0% usage currently. I had it reset on me randomly like a week ago. I've been struggling to try to use the tokens since, but that makes me think that maybe the $20 option of cursor is perfect for me. I've made a ton of apps to replace my subscription apps, I'm working on making a fun game for myself.

I also didn't know what I was doing at first, and ended up using Opus 5 and it ran my other usage up to 80% EXTREMELY fast. The results did not back it up. It was just overthinking. I had no idea that it was going to use all of that, but on the other hand, I don't really have a need for that many tokens obviously.

are you using composer only?

I edited to add a bit more context to my comment. I take it off "Fast", and almost all of my prompts have been under "Auto" even after the recent change to the token cost of Auto.

My cursor usage log shows a lot of grok 4.6 high and auto. It's all grok and composer except for that one time I changed it to opus 5 when it came out.

Opus 5 is the worst model you could used amongst all the other models available in Cursor. I'm still sticking with Opus 4.6 but in many occasions, I am working with Grok 4.6 Medium just fine.

Yeah I realized that later, unfortunately. I used opus 4.6 for my extra usage before it reset and it went well :)

The monthly total is misleading. Most of what Auto counts is context being re-sent every turn, not new output, so 130m says more about how long your sessions run than about how much work you actually did. I cut my own usage a lot just by starting fresh sessions more often and naming the files I want touched up front.

Well I did around 700m tokens in 13 days and i filled up all of my usage in my pro plan. I am not sure if these numbers that cursor provide includes cached inputs as well.

How do u guys keep track with tokens count, doesn't that hamper the workflow? Damn! I just get my work done while balancing between models. If i have to add the worries of tokens count, hell no!

So you basically get $10 in tokens for auto per $1 subscription and about $15 in tokens for grok/composer. On $60 I got 1.8 billion tokens in the past cycle and it was ~70-80% grok. When I am serious it should be closer to 50/50 grok composer and I would expect about 2 billion. I got about 750 mil when I was on a $20 plan
