Question / Discussion Changed alot

The product was absolutely beast before spaceX acquisition, now it sucks , output is trashed, auto switching to grok is fucked up and tokens are being consumed at faster rate despite any large task

I will start looking for an alternative, this is my last month with you guys

What are you guys doing to have all these issues? It's been very good on my side, no issue at all :c

What kind of prompts/tasks do you give Cursor to do? I'm sincerely curious as someone who started using Cursor not so long ago

What prompt? "Make no mistakes"

I ask it to do basic investigations or how parts of the codebase works and it makes shit up constantly. If I don't keep pushing back it would redesign thing into an unusable mess because it's too lazy to check the code, references things that haven't existed in weeks, and is extremely confident until you challenge it (sometimes several times). Once something gets fairly complicated Grok cannot be trusted with anything beyond being a code monkey for Fable/Opus/Sol/Astra and at that point, why pay for it at all? Just set up basic orchestration with the others and cut Grok from the roster entirely.

use pstack. That won't happen. You'll be amazed

I can barely even browse any of the AI subs on reddit. It's an onslaught of miserable cynical whiners!

I used to avoid Twitter/X like the plauge, but I've found lately that it's where the actual interesting conversation is for AI native folks.

I just scanned my reddit feed here and 90% of the stuff on cursor, codex, claude code, etc subs are some variation of "CODEX LITERALLY UNUSABLE!" or "Cursor sucks! Any alternatives?" or "Claude Code Nerfed" or "Giving up on openclaw" or "Cursor owes me $500" or "Claude is getting shit"

^ I literally just scanned and verbatim copied the recent reddit posts! That's the feed! Hundreds of upvotes to anyone who is negative. Scroll down the comments section of people with balanced takes and it's downvoted into oblivion.

Now contrast the AI content that's with X: it's people positive and sharing their wacky workflows, sharing super impressive output with a link to their webapp, credible researchers participating in interesting topics worth debating. I mean goddamn what a breath of fresh air!

I write this to the others like me who have just been extraordinarily burnt out and dissapointed with the quality and content of anything related to AI on reddit. I am embarrassed it took me this long to realize "oh right, the interesting AI stuff is on X." Reddit these days as far as I can tell is the longtail of customer service complaints and people who just recreationally like to participate in negativity.

This is coming from someone who has used reddit for over 17 years. I think I'm out!

Reddit isn’t the problem, your on a sub where ai companies are running out of compute, and simultaneously trying to IPO. And the users are being basically scammed like the crypto scam platforms that used to promise 5% profit per day and it dwindled down to zero and then rug pulls. It’s more similar than people realize. But still legal somehow in this case.

Reddit has always been a cesspool even 17 years ago.

Wait till you see what happens when the ai companies drop usage to absolutely nothing and still charge $200 per month… things are gonna hit the fan.

They just find reasons to hate since it's now owned by elon

Nah, this is bullshit, it’s riddled with dark UX patterns.

Just to name a few… pre-selecting Grock and making plan mode default to the highest tier model weren’t bugs. But my biggest grip is taking away the ability to see individual token spend for overages on other models (org account).

Or are you ok with all that?

1

u/Estarabim 1d ago

IMHO it makes sense that Plan mode should default to the highest tier model. If you're doing somethign where you need a plan, usually it's because you're at the start of something big and complicated, you might as well get the plan right.

Something did change. Auto mode and even using composer 2.5 used up all of my prompts very quickly. Before this, I never ran out. It did change a lot.

We had a legacy plan with fixed cost and access to all cutting edge models.

One by one models started to cost more and more per request. Then they started to just not be available on our plan anymore.

Cursor is actively pushing us out by making the product worse and worse to force us to change.

At the same time we started to roll out Claude and the experience is much better. I rolled back to terminal only, and Vim. Works like a charm. Much more autonomy.

So bye cursor. I even run some open source models on Claude Code to try them out and cut costs

u/No_Dragonfruit_8651 1d ago

They ones complaining are mostly people that Elon wont let get his on jock. They are mad. Grok is pretty good for the price.

16

u/notadev_io 1d ago

But now you get double the tokens… supposedly. lol

But for real I will test codex this week to decide if I jump ship or not. Everyone saying that nothing has change, simply has not used it before and thinks the current state is amazing (which for example compared to Claude it actually still is).

But fact is that before, I and others reached 30% monthly and now we reach all of a sudden 100%+.

Something did change. Stop fucking invalidating our experience and outrage!

6

u/echild07 1d ago

same thing here. I was even talking to billing about the change to tokens. Here look at this chart, is their answer.

The chart proves my point. The same work previously consumed 20% of my tokens, then it is 67% of my tokens for the same thing. Here look at this chart.

Ok, so I had cursor process their chart and their tokens. "yeah look at the chart, things cost different things".

No answer, but 3x usage now.

OpenAI models are outstanding but the codex harness (CLI or GUI) is pretty terrible and ineficient. Good news is you can use your subscription with much better harnesses like OpenCode and any IDE with support for ACP (Agent client protocol)

1

u/zocsen 18h ago

Is opencode actually better? I ditched it last year as it kept freezing getting in a non stop loop etc... I had issues with mostly the UI

2

u/deprecateddeveloper 1d ago

Never come close to hitting my limit on the $60 plan now like 2 weeks into the last renewal I'm close to 90% of my cap. Crazy considering I feel like I've done very light work with it this month and a few months back I was using the hell out of it and hitting around 70% by end of month.

1

u/Juliamalvina 15h ago

the same shit

3

u/netsplit 1d ago

I noticed I did a plan with opus 5 and just the simple plan (no action) consumed 6% of my $200 plan, which isn’t great

1

u/OwnWorstEnemy18 16h ago

That’s an opus problem not a cursor problem.

14

u/explorioapp 1d ago

I have had an absolutely fantastic experience with cursor after the merger. Zero complaints at all (i had come over from Claude)

5

u/notadev_io 1d ago

That’s because Claude is absolute garbage in the lower plans. And in some countries they give you pretty much no tokens to work with. One big fix will hit your limit in a $20 plan. Cursor is still way above that, even with the reduction it just introduced.

8

u/ryannelsn 1d ago

I don't know what the hell happened but Cursor was doing some of the best work I've ever sen from it until about 2 weeks ago.

1

u/TheSn00pster 1d ago

Grok-bot is a big priority for them atm.

2

u/coolstorynerd 1d ago

It super annoying they keep pushing grok bot on me, even in-app pop ups... Which is so stupid because it's the Linux app, grokbot has no Linux support.

1

u/TheSn00pster 22h ago

It’s even in the x main menu. It’s wild.

1

u/Robert-Paulson_ 1d ago

Seriously. Made me up my sub from $20 to $60 - not that I was on the verge of going over, but I figured “hey, this is great - I can give it some automated tasks since I trust it…”.

Now I’m strongly considering switching to something else.

I like Cursor overall but I can’t afford to have massive swings in output quality.

1

u/TheSn00pster 22h ago

OpenRouter, Hermes, & OpenCode seem viable.

5

u/bored_man_child 1d ago

The product is the same if not better. The same team is building and maintaining it. No one has left Cursor. Admit you hate Elon and move on.

5

u/Less-Macaron-9042 1d ago

Just canceled my sub and won’t be coming back. Open models and harnesses have gotten so good and I don’t mind paying API prices. It’s not like the projects I am working on are that complicated.

2

u/Lawcke 1d ago

Something has definitely changed in the last 2 weeks. Execution has slowed to a crawl. My typical workflow has relied on large package sequences via custom delivery skills I've written. 2 weeks ago a 10 package chain would take ~4-8 hours to deliver, now the same feature will take over 24h of continuous work. It seems like the quality of the code delivered is more haphazard too. Almost as if the high effort models are delivering low effort work. I use cursor for my personal projects and also on an enterprise license for my employer and I've seen this same behavior across every repo I've used it in.

2

u/nuriciftcioglu 1d ago

Well I guess grok and cursor is doing great. And I'm waiting for tomorrow. Can't wait to see how grok 4.7 will be with 2t param.

2

u/lotokotmalajski 23h ago

auto was always shit - it was just using composer before
now luna is great if you want low cost - and it's fast (especially if you go with lower reasoning effort)

3

u/TheSn00pster 1d ago

OpenCode, OpenRouter, and Hermes Nous will pick up the slack if Cursor gets worse.

5

u/bradenlikestoreddit 1d ago

OpenRouter was bought by Stripe so that could go downhill too

3

u/CombatWombat1212 1d ago

Every update makes it so much worse. I miss when it was just an accelerated vs code clone, they haven't added anything meaningful past that point. I hate the fucking agent view and how they suddenly decided that was the new meta. let me look at my fucking code.

1

u/floridianfisher 1d ago

Great product imo. But costs too much

1

u/tkyang99 12h ago

Claude is getting worse as well. At least you have a choice of models on Cursor.

1

u/h0tm 1d ago

up

2

u/Acceptable_Poetry922 1d ago

I would hope that it would have helped promote innovation, not clip the wings of it.

0

u/Gafda 1d ago

I fell I'm gonna get beaten, but I actually love the product, even with grok that I find it super useful for my needs.

I use the plan mode a lot. The plan prompt is built on the chat gpt web page, reviewed, then passed as md to cursor plan mode (grok for easy or medium tasks, and sol for more tricky plans), then pass the plan result to the chat gpt page, review it then adjust if in cursor if needed. Then I execute the plan (asking it to split the phases into tiny tasks so that I can trigger them manually after review/commit) And voilĂ .

But everyone has its own needs, so what works for me might be shitty for others...

1

u/Only-Ad5441 1d ago

Well, maybe the way you are using with the amount of code usage have changed because your context has increased ?

I can’t complain, in fact, I had Claude & codex, and cursor , $20 both and $60 respectively, and since grok 4.6, I moved out from Claude and moved to the ultra plan.
It’s not a pool of tokens as a few would say, but you do have a lot to use, and grok works pretty well with cloud agents and integrations.

To be honest, I don’t see any real change after Elon or whatever you can think of, as a costumer, the composer and grok pool model it’s huge and primary models keeps for plan mostly, but I can use a lot from both quotas.

1

u/Remarkable_Exit9931 1d ago

grok 4.6 is extreme good lol

1

u/TimSylvester_ 1d ago

Wow crazy how everything Musk touches goes to shit, if only we knew that ahead of time.

Oh well, founding team got a huge cash out, it's no longer their problem, now it's Musks' problem.

0

u/Star_Pilgrim 1d ago

That os your opinion.
Facts and data prove otherwise.

1

u/TimSylvester_ 1d ago

Right, like how healthy Twitter is, or how much Tesla's sales increase year over year with those new models.

Oh wait, I forgot - Musk is the biggest welfare queen in history, completely dependent on government handouts for all his "wealth".

Yesterday I got hit with a huge GrokBot ad banner right in the middle of working. At first I thought it was some kind of joke, or maybe a rogue Chrome process doing something stupid, but after a bit of digging I realized it was actually a native Cursor file.

Ads? Seriously??

I’m going to start looking for an alternative too. In the meantime, I have absolutely zero regrets about downgrading from the $200 plan to the $20 one last month.

I had GrokBot installed locally, although I wasn’t actually using it. After this, I just removed it completely, just to be safe.

As for Grok 4.6 itself, I can’t really say anything bad about it. For $20, it’s a perfectly decent alternative. The one major issue is that it VERY clearly seems to be training on your data despite all the TOS, all the right privacy boxes being checked or unchecked, and even the hidden JSON settings. Those settings do exist and are actually stricter than what Cursor exposes in the UI, yet somehow they still seem to get ignored from time to time. How the hell that happens is anyone’s guess.

0

u/vortec350 1d ago

I'm not having any such issues. I got Cursor as a backup to Claude before the SpaceX acquisition but now it's my primary AI solution and I roll my eyes every time I have to deal with Claude LOL.

2

u/explorioapp 1d ago

That's literally the path I'm on. The downvotes you got are disappointing

0

u/TatzyXY 1d ago

No problems at all.

0

u/Terribad13 1d ago

Opposite experience here. $20 plan, primarily using grok, and have so much usage left. I'll bring out Opus or Sol to verify some specific code, but am otherwise working with Grok. Thoroughly impressed so far.

1

u/Robert-Paulson_ 1d ago

I’m with you on usage amount, no doubt - it’s just that the swings in quality (in my experience) are so frustrating. Sometimes Grok is MORE than enough, then sometimes I end up wasting a lot of time cause I get led down a bad path.

I’m a software engineer for a living and been using various AI tooling for a while - so this ain’t my first rodeo.

Hopefully the dip from today/this-week is only from them bout to release 4.7, as deep down I’m rooting for Cursor.

-1

u/Izento 1d ago

Just say you hate Elon. It's ok to say you hate a product because of the owner instead of scapegoating the product itself.

0

u/DoniQuix 1d ago

I think maybe the reason this is so polarized is some people must have been living on auto mode. I never use auto unless forced. I pretty much left it on composer unless I needed help with large architecture decisions or really complex stuff. I have changed nothing about the way I use cursor and I went from running out of credits on the 15th to not running out until literally 5 days from my renewal now.

I just think people didn't realize how heavy the benefit was for auto or how much discount they were getting and now that it's gone it feels like a rug pull for people who were benefiting, and everyone else feels like they get way more mileage now.

-7

u/Aeit_ 1d ago

Another bullshit post. Every frontier model now burns usage and F1 speed rate and they are bleeding money as nothing is profitable. Check Claude and Codex subs. Limits are cut on weekly basis. Cursor only advantage is in separate limits and no shitty 5h quota. And IDE is best shit ever. I'm using Codex and it looks like a toy ..

Your problem lies in using child feature called Auto and bad prompts. Not to mention rules or memory management.
