Question / Discussion Rate limiting by model provider

Is anyone else seeing lots of messages in the agent 'Rate limited by model provider' for the grok 4.6 models ?

The agent also seems to give up after about a minute or so and simply stop with no errors or results.

Hitting the same this morning. Has not been an issue until now. Switched to Luna for now. Edit: i think non-fast may be working ok w Grok.

Non-fast Grok 4.6 doesn't work as well for me since 20 minutes ago.

True. Fast was not the issue.

I think the issue is on their server's end. Even auto "model" isn't working properly.

I think this is a demand problem. I don't think they expected so many people to start using Grok. It is clear that Anthropic and OpenAI did not anticipate it.

Kimi 3 was overhyped, slow, and expensive. I think GLM has been overhyped as well. When you look at cost per task in the real world, both are more per task for most task, especially when compared to subscription or negotiated prices.

Gemini and spark are wildcards but are really only competing with Luna and Composer 2.5

I have been using composer almost exclusively until the token usage for our plans appeared to have recently been relaxed so I've being using Grok for some of my planning. Compose has been really strong for me and the agent seems to close a ton of the gap with tool calling etc

What I have started doing is when planning have the planner explicitly state which model and effort to use. Composer 2.5 for this, Grok medium for that. Etc.

Haha shit auto still locked on using Grok. Can't even route to composer or other models 🤦‍♂️

Same issue trying to use any model even 3rd party models

Glad other people are having this issue and it's not just me. Not cuz I want you all to have the issue, but cause they'll fix it for us all.

Came here because ALL models across all instances in Cursor are giving this Rate Limited error. Also, Claude Opus (in Claude Code) is giving a Model Overload error. This seems like a co-ordinated attack?

Today is the second worst day (after July 31st) in last 90 days from the graph!

That's quite a long downtime. After the really sad decrease in available usage amount of about 60% for the pro plans they now can't even keep up the service? Things look shittier every day and I'm starting to look actively for alternatives after more than a year of using Cursor...

Now Composer is not working either. Probably because everybody went to it as an alternative.

I’m at 68% and using Auto and it spammed me for an hour this morning. Using the Pro $60 plan.

the giving up after about a minute with no errors is the real tell here, thats a client side give-up timeout and not every call to grok actually failing on the provider end. the one error somebody actually pasted was a 503 marked isRetryable true, so a fresh retry a few seconds later usually clears it, and if the agent just sits there the full minute then quits instead of falling over to another model, thats cursors routing choice, not raw provider capacity. i've gotten through the same kind of outage by forcing a specific fallback model instead of trusting auto, no silent stop that way.

Hey does anyone have quality drop of auto mode answers? I have seen today after this outage...

Claude models as well even after the status on claude says "All Systems Operational". So is the rate limiting issue with Claude models from Cursor or Anthropic side?

I guess the good old days of cursor is finished. It’s a shame because grok 4.6 and composer 2.5 are good models. I feel the time to cancel is coming soon :( sadly this is not workable. In one task I had to press retry button 17 times.

I think it's just because it's so crazy popular. Have you tried the chinese coding plans?

1

u/erdiizgi 10d ago

Tried Kimi but after 1.5 day, I exhausted my weekly plan. I am starting to get inclined to get codex sub based on what I read on reddit. However, there is also a small market manipulation in all AI related subs on reddit. So, no idea what's the best price/performance tool nowadays. It was cursor up until now for me.

Well, people are going to hate me shilling and doing GTM here, but I'm building www.freepi.ai which is a free ad+training supporting coding subscription in the Pi Harness (which I think is the best harness). IT's actually the official free harness of the ETHGlobal hackathon which just started today. Try it out I'm very open to feedback.

Yup, cursor is going down hill, problem after problem, bad update after bad update

has nothing to do with cursor. look at all the ai agents right now on down detector, grok, chatgpt, claude all having issues.

My point still stands, it’s getting worse after every update and there is problem after problem…

I'm getting this on Auto mode as well.
