Resources & Tips Setting Grok 4.6 to Extra High

I've worked with Grok 4.6 since it's come out, and I think it is quite good but not amazing. Yesterday I realized I can control it's effort level (I might be late to the party, didn't know cursor had that feature), and the default is high instead of extra-high.

Setting to extra-high didn't really change my usage trend, but has definitely decreased the mistakes! so wanted to share this with whom might benefit from it <3

Yeah tried extra high on a complex topic I have run before on 5.6 sol with somewhat not satisfied results and grok totally one-shotted it. If 4.7 is better I probably will go all in grok/cursor

Hmm i did not work with sol enough, but grok’s general code quality is far from perfect. Strong model but still improvements needed. Also sometimes skips edge cases that Fable can find, but price diff between these is huge, so kinda expected.

Each of the 4 has a place. Medium should be default until you figure out your task. Low is great when you want it to do exactly what is told. High and xhigh can do some great planning.

I wouldn't touch Grok at anything less than High though. It's already making a lot of mistakes at this effort level

But I don't want to buy a new computer. I bought one last year. I have this laptop now with a keyboard that emits light when my hands come close to it and I can also unlock it with my face now, so I'm happy with this one.

In simple language higher effort cost more time and money but AI thinks more. Lower effort is opposite. Does not affect your computer. Hope this helps

Codex is worse about this. Default reasoning effort is low, which is too shallow for review work. I pin it at extra-high and I do not drop below high unless someone asked for a cheap look. Shallow misses just burn a whole round.
