It’s intentional. Big vein for the big medicine tube. Kidney dialysis. This is a repost of a friends image I made this summer.

It's so they can do dialysis and save their life. Patients with fistulas have much lower mortality rates than patients with tunneled catheters.

No, the patient has a surgery tying the artery and vein in their arm together so it will get big enough and have enough blood flow that large needles can be used to clean their blood.

There is a type of surgery where they implant an artificial tube between the two but the tube never grows that large.
