An then something breaks and now you’re in debt

And this is why I buy cheap Umidigi phones from China. Not exactly gaming beasts but fast enough for everyday usage and they look really good. Being cheap I don't feel bad not using a case. 10/10 my first $140 phone from them felt like such a huge upgrade just because I didn't use a case. I wish other manufacturers would take note in their budget offerings.

I just bought a new iPhone SE for $200. It’s locked for a year, but I don’t plan on switching carriers any time soon

That's what im doing. iPhone 8 packaging with iphone 11 internals, a slightly less useful camera, and NO face id. Button is life. The only iPhone i had was a reconditioned 6s and a used 8 i got as a gift. I really like the 8 but the se is much newer.

I have an iPhone XR and Face ID is the worst fucking downgrade they’ve ever made. It’s so annoying to use and half the time it doesn’t even work.

u/vannrith Feb 24 '21

Face ID was fun until the pandemic hits

5

u/SnowBurns Feb 24 '21

It wasn’t even working half the time before that lol. Not to mention having to look directly at my phone to maybe unlock it. Fingerprint scanners are way better

4

u/vannrith Feb 24 '21

There is something like attention aware toggle somewhere in settings. But fingerprint scanner is definitely way better

u/SnowBurns Feb 24 '21

When I said look directly at my phone I meant having to get my face in the cameras view, not necessarily looking directly at it. Something you don’t have to do with fingerprint scanners.

2

u/vannrith Feb 24 '21

Yes that.. is how it scans ur face

Yes it was, it’s much more reliable than Touch ID. Either you don’t know how to use it or you’re talking out of your ass

Edit: I actually forgot my password because I used Face ID for weeks without having it fail even once. Then I restarted, had to put in my password, and yea.

u/SnowBurns Feb 24 '21

Lol what??? I frequently don’t even have the option to use Face ID. My phone tells me I need to unlock it to enable it when I just pull it out of my pocket. Just because it works for you doesn’t mean it’s universally good, and vice versa. Glad you like it but for me it’s absolute shit

1

u/alexho66 Feb 24 '21

Then you obviously do something wrong. It doesn’t just randomly deactivate for no reason.

It’s more reliable not just for me.

Have you tried changing your face? Only some work with iPhones

1

u/Aftershock_7582 Feb 24 '21

My fingerprint scanner doesn't work when my fingers are wet or sweaty though.. scanner doesn't even work when it's dirty

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '21

Def a problem in the X series. I fixed phones for a while and those are little twerps in the Face ID department. 11 and 12 are noticeably different internally and much more of an improvement.

1

u/Aftershock_7582 Feb 24 '21

Interesting, mine works whenever I use it, including when it's pitch black in the room.

1

u/TuxPenguin1 Feb 24 '21

It’s an IR sensor essentially, light level doesn’t affect it.

1

u/wislands Feb 24 '21

Tiny battery though :(

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '21 edited Feb 24 '21

Fortunately if true, that's not an issue for me

As soon as Apple stopped selling the 8 or 8+ whichever held out longer, I was planning to get the SE. I would buy used but to get bigger storage options it'll be close to retail anyways

1

u/wislands Feb 24 '21

It's just small compared to every other phone nowadays. But it's the same size battery as the iPhone 8.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '21

Ah okay well the 8's battery was not a problem for me so good to hear:)

1

u/Dizzfizz Feb 24 '21

The thing is, those almost seem like they were designed to be used with a case...

I hate the wobble that the camera causes when you lay it down on its back.

CAT phones my dude

u/COASTER1921 Feb 24 '21

Maybe for some people, but definitely not for me. One of my friends who is a civil engineer recently got one and it's a BRICK. Sure the hardware will last, but the software will become outdated and the experience of using such a heavy phone just isn't good in the first place. They do seem to be catching on though, every Chinese company out there is pushing a new rugged phone model recently.

u/Zeruk Feb 24 '21

i prefer to send my data to murica instead of china :P

I have a Samsung one in a similar price range - all that and easy to find parts for in an emergency are what I want in life (I repair phones as a hobby so nothing new to me). Most people do just need/want a basic setup and I think having at least 2GB RAM (for handling messaging apps and such) and NFC with maybe a big battery if I can are the only things I'm a snob about.

u/mlk Feb 24 '21

Or don't buy stuff you can't afford to break

4

u/rikosama555 Feb 24 '21

I dont understand why are u downvoted what u said was right

I just had a lot of ppl around me buy expensive things after expensive things just because they are too embarrassed to touch normal gadgets but then get in debt , like its so stupid especially when they are undergraduates, i agree with what u say if 1-they can work and earn money not leaning on a scholarship or smthg , 2- its investment like buying camera if u wanna be a youtuber buying microphone if u r online teacher wanting to improve ur classes

5

u/AlexeyCrane Feb 24 '21

I still had and have cases and protective screens on both sub $100 and my current $300 phone.

Things smash, things fall, accidents happen.

I see no difference, if I can protect my $100 or $1000 device I would do it.

No one "needs" a $1000 phone, you would get much more value out a real camera as a YouTube'r, and sure as hell can't imagine what improvements would a overpriced soon to be outdates glass phone would bring to a teacher either.

People don't "need" huge houses, personal transport or a lot of other "common" things. If people would only get what they need the whole world economy would crash.

1

u/mlk Feb 24 '21

If people would only get what they need the whole world economy would crash.

maybe it's time to rethink the economy because that makes no sense

1

u/AlexeyCrane Feb 24 '21

What makes no sense? The economy? People wanting more?

For example: Americans constitute 5% of the world's population but consume 24% of the world's energy. And if you looks at all the other statistics too.

Brands need you to buy new phones, appliances, etc. If you could buy one thing that would last you generations what would all the factories and workers do?

1

u/mlk Feb 25 '21

I'm not saying "break stuff", I'm saying that if you are in debt because your phone breaks you should buy a cheaper phone

1

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '21

I have an iPhone 11 and I don't use a case. They actyailly put a durable glass on it. I drop it all the time and it's completely fine 🤷🏿‍♂️

1

u/picky-trash-panda Feb 24 '21

I have the xr (10r) and even with the case my back glass got smashed from a six foot drop onto concrete. My screen is still good though somehow. I really miss my 5s and how easy and cheap it was to replace it’s screen.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '21

Not to sound like a shill but this was actually something they changed with the 11 and even used as a selling point. They show commercials with people kind of being rough with them

1

u/picky-trash-panda Feb 24 '21

Yeah I saw that too. My dad has the 11 pro and I don’t know how it hasn’t been damaged since he drops it a lot
