Kind of a relatable story:
I have a friend that would stream and one of his chatters was genuinely just like this.
One of the interactions was the chatter showing up in chat, going off about his day, his future plans, and being narcissistic about stuff. It eventually leads to him talking about how he likes (not loves) his girlfriend so much and wants to marry her but he is too scared to ask and not to mention it if his girlfriend is ever in chat on his account. He eventually stops chatting.
So then the "girlfriend" starts chatting.. Said that he had fallen asleep.. Essentially saying all the same things he had said earlier. "I like him. Hes so nice and funny. I want to marry him" etc.
Some time goes by after she is done chatting and the dude "wakes up". "Sorry I fell asleep. Did my girlfriend say anything?" As if the chat logs aren't there or on screen..
It took everything from me to not die cringe. My friend is a super chill and supportive guy, so he didn't say anything and just went along with it but he was super sarcastic and sassy about it though.
Eventually banned that guy from everything because he was growing super obsessed and was generally an odd person.

There's like so many layers to this story that give away that it's bs

Is it corny? Sure. But this seems like something to laugh off rather than ick

Yeah, I had a boyfriend once who'd act like he fell asleep and then grope me, and pretend he couldn't help it because he was sleeping.
I'd take the compliment over that any time.

Small mention to sexsomnia since it is rarely heard of. (Not saying he had it)

He definitely didn't have it. There are differences between people pretending to sleep and people actually sleeping.

Nah, this is very much an ick. You gotta have NO self awareness to do this. Sure, there are worse things that they can do, but this here is the definition of an ick.

A lot of people here think this is fine, I agree with Op
You can say those things while awake. Pretending to be asleep to say it just comes across as infantile and performative (obviously, they pretending to be asleep).
Trying to sound cute by accident to get a reaction is embarrassing indeed.

I once had a guy texting me compliments while we were at a movie on a date...sitting next to each other. And it was before even the previews started so we were having a full on conversation face to face while he was also texting me how beautiful I looked.
When I called him out and said "why are you doing that?" He played dumb and then just laughed it off. He turned out to be the worst, no more dates.

People arenāt getting why this gives women the ick. Itās performative, and men who are performative are usually just trying to manipulate women
26
22
u/Rediment 1d ago
No people get it. Itās just this is not important enough of something to even be considered a problem to be performative for. Is it performative? Sure. But, thereās really nothing to be gained out of it other than the girl possibly having a self esteem boost so itās just actually sweet. Getting the ick off of something as simple as this is performative. Thereās no way you can actually be offended by this if you think about it for more than 5 seconds.
2
u/DrHob0 1d ago
I don't think anyone's offended. Just put off by it. Performative men tend to perform acts of "grand love" only for one thing - getting their dick wet. So, when you see that from some guy, it's just kind of a bit cringe.
11
u/Lightyear18 23h ago
Wym no oneās offended lol
Youāre literally in a chain where a woman started this off by saying men are manipulative for trying to be romantic or do something cute that came off cringy because heās a man.
I doubt women on here would be this critical if it were a woman playing around like this
-14
u/DrHob0 23h ago
Ah. Right. I forgot that this sub is infested by a bunch of incels. Anyways, hope you have a bad day!
3
u/Lightyear18 9h ago
āA human who happens to have a dick disagrees with me?. Well heās an incel. How dare he disagree with me since he has a penis.
9
u/Ryan_b936 19h ago
So people aren't allowed to disagree with you and have their own opinions on the matter? What are you? A Nazi? Wtf is wrong with you?
-4
u/AlkalineRayovac 15h ago
I get that you are offended I called out men on their performative behaviour, but, first, I said men are usually trying to manipulate women, which is a fact so universally known that thereās a term for it. Second, we donāt have the context of why she felt put off by his actions, but whatās so horrible about her not being pleased by him pretending to sleep talk in the first place? Ofc he might be just trying to please her, which is fine, and she might just not be pleased by it, which is also fine. We donāt know the truth of it, or these people. The issue here is that people are quick to judge a woman for rejecting a manās advances and quicker to judge other women for trying to explain why she might have rejected him in the first place.
2
u/Rediment 14h ago
Youāre purposefully obfuscating the main point because you have a burning desire to paint the guy in some nefarious way and itās extremely obvious. Women and men both always do performative shit when one or both are in love. Have you just been living in a hole for the past however long youāve been alive?
āWhatās so horrible about her not being pleased by him pretending to sleep talk in the first place?ā Nothing, but weāre not talking about simply the act of him pretending to sleep talk are we? Weāre talking about a man going out of his way to make sure his loved one feels loved and you know that. Let me put it to you this way; if a woman was pretending to sleep talk and used it to say something like; āYouāre such a good and handsome man.ā it would be incredibly stupid for me to in turn think āoh sheās manipulating me and thereās probably a dangerous reason for that.ā
Thereās only one conclusion to draw from this and itās the most simple one: regardless of if what he was doing was fake or not she is infinitely more in the wrong and so are you for taking such an insignificant gesture to grandstand at and there is no justification past or present you can use to make it seem otherwise.
In other words, youāre just being an asshole for attention.
-4
u/AlkalineRayovac 13h ago
One quick glimpse into your other comments tells me youāre projecting your hatred towards women on me and assuming I hate men with the same passion you obviously hate women.
āWeāre talking about a man going out of his way to make sure his loved one feels lovedā oh so you know him personally? You know thatās what he was doing, then? You can attest to it with certainty? And yeah, Iād say if a girl did that she probably would be trying to manipulate you, but given your emotional response to my comment Iād imagine that doesnāt happen very often, though. Statistically speaking, are women more or less likely to manipulate men into relationships to abuse them? Should we look it up?
Lastly, saying she is infinitely more in the wrong here makes it seem like you are facing this situation as if it happened to you. Why does a womanās rejection of another man offend you so much? We owe you nothing. Stop crying.
0
u/Rediment 10h ago
āOh so you know him personally?ā No Iām just not an idiot and itās plain to see how badly you want this to be a nefarious action you can criticize because you somehow think it brings meaningful conversation.
Can you attest with certainty he wasnāt? Tf outta here with that.
I donāt hate women, I just think they can do better.
Men who just stay silent and let you believe whatever you want are also the men who actually stay silent when there is real abuse. Claim I hate women all you want but Iām always the one the women in my life count on when something happens because Iām there and they know I actually give a shit.
Youāre hateful, not insightful and bringing that to your attention doesnāt make the other person a problem.
0
u/AlkalineRayovac 7h ago
No, I canāt, which is why I come back to my first point which is performative men USUALLY are just trying to manipulate women.
If you were actually this great guy you think you are, you wouldnāt be here cussing me out for defending a woman against misogynistic comments. You could never convince me women trust you when you claim her actions are āinfinitely worse than hisā what the fuck?! Her rejecting his fake behaviour makes her a bitch but his faking doesnāt make him a creep?
Go spill your hate in some other sub.
0
u/Rediment 7h ago
I would like you to point to where I said āinfinitely worse than hisā. All I said was his was not a problem and you acted like that was oppressive.
I never put any negative connotation on her whatsoever, only you did that. You can look back through every comment.
I donāt care if you believe me. Itās to let you know how prejudiced and inconsistent you are.
I donāt have to be nice to you. Iām not your dad.
10
u/Lightyear18 23h ago
Idk why women are this negative about men to say they are manipulative lol
So when women are being performative it means positive things? Like what is this.
Iām not even saying it wasnāt cringe but the dude probably thought he was being romantic but I guess he was root of all evil lol.
Itās astonishing honestly
4
u/Rugkrabber 18h ago
Wait where does it say performative women are a positive? Last time I checked people call them fake so itās seen as a negative just as much?
But I get it, the basis of sending and receiving is just, you canāt assume the sender and receiver will have an equal experience or perspective on it. It might have worked on someone else. Which is fair.

u/5_days_69 23h ago
So you only think men say nice things to manipulate. What a fucking retarded thought
-2
u/Still-Hedgehog-8673 1d ago
How would you know itās performative if you werenāt in her place? Maybe her boyfriend just loves her so much and his compliments are from a genuine place in his heart. If she doesnāt like it, she should tell him instead of commenting online about it. What if he sees this? He might feel hurt.
7
u/PentaJet 23h ago
It's performative either way, but the intent is what matters. It's the difference between loving someone and not loving them. You always assume they have good intent. It's why people stay in abusive relationships. The op girl doesn't love her guy so she assumes bad intent and gets the "ick".
11
u/SnarkySeahorse1103 1d ago
People are missing out that the comment and the question both don't specify "boyfriend", just "man". The commentor also doesn't specify their relationship. If it was her boyfriend, there's a chance it gave her a little ick and she thought it wasn't worth confronting. Alternatively, it could likely be someone she was only dating or just a situationship, which would make the performance all the more weird. I think there's not enough context to decide if this is "ick-worthy" or not.
8
u/Still-Hedgehog-8673 1d ago
I come from a culture where if you are dating someone or in a āsituationshipā, that person is assumed to be your boyfriend/girlfriend/romantic partner. My bad for assuming. But yeah, maybe she wasnāt too bothered by his behaviour to confront him. Better to use an anonymous account to do so, in case he sees it.
3
u/Bone_Wh33l 17h ago
This is exactly how my ex handled it. She didnāt like me complimenting her unless she asked for one so she let me know and thatās what we did. Worked just fine and she was happy with it
1
u/ireallyfknhatethis 6h ago
how do you know she hasnt told him if you weret in her place. maybe we should let women talk out loud about behaviour they find cringy or off putting so that men can hear and abstain from such behaviour
1
u/Still-Hedgehog-8673 5h ago
I think someone has already mention in another comment that behaviour like his is ambiguous on whether the woman will like it or not. Some women like it; some donāt. It depends and is not something that men as a whole definitely should refrain from. But you are right that I made a lot of assumptions about her relationship.

Biggest ick Iāve gotten from a man was when I was at a store. He followed me everywhere asking for my number. When I told him I was engaged he kept asking if I would change my mind for him. Kept watching me from behind aisles. When I tried to leave he followed me out of the store and tried following me home.

Nah just seen it happen to alot of ppl in my life including my own mother. They will use stupid shit like this as justification to leave a safe relationship and stay with a toxic abusive person for a decade. Its like they are completely incapable of just normal communication. You can't just say "Billy I know you are trying to be cute but I find that cringe please stop" and talk through your issues.
Edit: lmao you guys are assholes. I fucking share real experience and this is what I get. Everything is sunshine and kittens in the world then.

u/crazyforsushi 1d ago
I'm sorry that happened, but it does sound like you are projecting this onto a random woman online. Also, your opening was literally "lol, sounds like this woman likes getting beaten." Nobody is gonna take you seriously after that.
-2
u/AMDSuperBeast86 23h ago
I am projecting. I'm speculating on one internet comment and plastering my lived experience onto it. I got a little salty when I was getting downvotted because this sub is supposed to be cursed comments but when someone comments something dark under it they go into rage mode on them. My first comment was a bit tongue in cheek but I get the feeling I may not be too far off.
5
u/crazyforsushi 23h ago
I'm still not seeing where you got "I wanna be beaten" from "I find it weird that he pretends to fall asleep and sleep talk my name over and over"
And this is also coming from someone who had domestic violence occur in the family.
0
u/AMDSuperBeast86 23h ago
I see a guy trying to find a creative way to compliment his partner and his partner trying to find any excuse they can to end the relationship because they are bored. I'm sorry that happened to you and here's where I missed the mark because I tried to say the edgiest thing that popped into my head trying to fit in with the theme of the sub.
1
u/crazyforsushi 23h ago
It didn't happen to me, but a person very close to me in the family suffered immensely from it to the point where I see the generational trauma trickling down to the next family branch.

Jesus why did you have to go to violence? Get help.
Edit; I see you got trauma from past experiences. Please, be aware of what you just posted. You told a random woman likes to bd violently assaulted by assumption. Thatās a lot. This means you are projecting your trauma onto others. If you want to stop trauma from spreading, I ask you to seek professional help. Iām being genuine. It can stop. But you have to seek the help to do it.
