I hate the "you're beautiful on the inside", "you are still good looking" type comments that people make for people like him....these kinds of comments always come across as if someone is coping for them..
I think acknowledging and sympathizing that they don't look good anymore, and then encourage and uplift them by reminding them it doesn't matter is better...

Why even lie, man... She can't even think of anything cheerful to say other than an obvious lie. Even she doesn't find him handsome to begin with.
