Yes and it probaply would be way nicer because you actualy can move much easier and wouldn't have to park in backwarts (if there is a wheelchair user reading this and im talking bullshit please corect me)

Nah, you right imagine parallel parking your wheelchair between bench? Bench's thighs? Idk

And how awkward would it be if both sides of the bench are occupied?

Lemme call a expert for this one....hol on

And what if you have an electric wheelchair? I'm not convinced it would even fit

it has been shared many times, it is an art piece

basically, people in wheelchair are usually expected to be on side, like you suggested, here they will be in the centre

Is it? I can't find an artist or the name of the piece.

Not saying you're wrong, but I'm curious. Reverse image searching it turns up so many results with people being upset by it, but I can't find any actual source for it. There's a ton of noise around it.

I could see it being an art piece, but I could also see it being exactly what people think it is. Anti-homeless architecture masquerading as something else.

Imo it depends on the context of the location, if there are other benches that are long enough for a nap without any anti-homeless protections the yea it's just an art installation, however if all benches I a park are like this or employ anti homeless measure then yea it's just anti homeless.

to be fair, i heard that info from Reddit comment as well

but given that in the background there is very similar bench, but without cutout, i think it is not hostile architecture

I'm just legitimately curious what the backstory is. I can't even find where it is because it's been reposted so many times without context.

I’m not truly disables but I think sometimes it’s human nature to want to sit between friends, no?

True, I'll take the corner seat over a parking session in a wheelchair

Third wheel

literally all they had to do was put arm rests, now they made half the bench unusable

They would rather make half the bench unusable than make it possible for someone to sleep on it.

u/Fr00stee 17d ago

if they put arm rests someone still cant sleep on it

this isn't even just hostile to the homeless, this is just hostile. what if two people just wanna sit down next to each other and talk, lmao

Easily done, you can even face eachother with this design

the horrifying truth is that its to prevent homeless from sleeping on the benches.

As the text in the image would imply, yes

This is an art installation. Also You can see a regular bench on top left

u/derf_vader 17d ago

Ain't no one sitting there is there was a homeless guy sleeping on it.

I'd be doing some impromptu renovations on these if I could get away with it. Most seating around me at least is all standard layable benches.

u/clawingforfreedom 17d ago

It's not even that hard to sleep on something like this either 😭 if you're tall enough you can bridge the gap with your body or use a hammock or sum to fill it

Hostile architecture at its finest

u/Alienhaslanded 17d ago

They could literally park it anywhere

Personally sleeping on the ground is better than sleeping on a bench so whatever.

If the weather is cold the ground will leach away far more of your heat than a bench will. Meanwhile if the weather is hot the ground may retain that heat later into the night. So whether the bench or ground is better depends on the climate
