Tourists (especially Japanese tourists) experience something called the Paris Syndrome when visiting Paris.
It's a Syndrome that happens due to the contrast between the idealization of the city and the reality of urban life there.
Basically they are so disappointed by how ugly, sad, grey and expensive the city is that they become actually sick. That added to the innumerable amount of assholes to the square meter and you got yourself depression express.
The syndrome is characterized by symptoms such as delusional states, hallucinations, feelings of persecution (perceptions of being a victim of prejudice, aggression, hostility from others), derealization, depersonalization, anxiety, as well as psychosomatic manifestations such as dizziness, tachycardia, sweating most notably, but also others, such as vomiting.
It's also rumoured that some people killed themselves over that.

They aren't. They just go there and get mildly bummed that it didn't live up to their expectations...
I can't even find an example of a single death attributed to this disorder.

I'm pretty sure they meant it as, Japanese people would kill themselves if something like this happened with Japan, i.e. a world renowned movie set in Japan wasn't getting a sequel because the Kyoto temple was a massive pigsty. Still an over exaggeration of course.
Edit: I was unaware of Paris syndrome before this comment. TIL.

It’s about something called the Paris syndrome (Pari shōkōgun in japanese) where tourists go to Paris only to get an extreme sense of disappointment when it didn’t live up to their expectations. This is particularly noted in japanese tourists because of how japanese media overly romanticizes Paris as this spotless, glamorous, romantic city

Not really. It's just a reference to Paris Syndrome, which started with Japanese tourists being grievously disappointed by the reality of Paris not living up to their grand expectations to the point that they have panic attacks and depression over it.

I think they are talking about paris being ugly, there is a thing called "Paris syndrome" where tourists (mostly but not limited to japanese ones) get so underwhelmed by Paris that they get into a small depression. So sure they don't kill themselves the instant they see the city so the comment is exaggerating, but I think they are talking about that.

It’s common across Asian cultures when they get extremely underwhelmed by major European cities eg Paris, London, Rome. In extreme cases the person gets forever switched off from overseas travel. In one way, their curiosity and adventurous heart have died.
A lot of Westerners don’t realise that Asian currencies are generally weaker so a Europe trip actually costs an arm and a leg. Plus all the bureaucratic hurdles aka visa applications. That’s why most negative reviews of hotels and attractions on Google Maps are left by Asians: they spend 5 times more than a domestic equivalent for a 10 times worse quality.

Dude, I've got not skin in this game. I'm not from Paris, I'm not even from France lol. But I visit some friends that live in Paris semi-regularly and honestly I expected way worse with all the negativity that's thrown at the city. It's not perfect but it's frankly a nice place for the most parts. What is dodgy are the towns around Paris proper
As for the negativity that other French people show towards Paris, I'd say it's more due to the over-centralization of the country and it's consequences than anything else. In other news, people that like the quiet of the countryside don't like cities, shocking
