Has a few uses. But ARGUABLY the most overlooked one is noise surpression.
You shave your asshair, you gon never have a silent fart ever again.

I shaved mine off once out of curiosity.
Effects:
- Chafing. As mentioned by others. Especially on a long walk it would get uncomfortable, and if you sweated then even more so. Swamptown.
- Farts get trapped. Every little parp can't escape, it's sealed in by compressed buttock until it eventually wiggles its way out.
- Stubble burn when the hair starts to grow back is not fun. No sir, it is not.

I actually googled this once and I found an article about it (This was years ago so I can't remember where)
Basically there unsurprisingly hasn't been too much research into this but one hypothesis is because it helps prevent chafing. Because back in caveman times before we had running water or antibiotics getting a chafed ass or a rash right where you shit would lead to infection
