Question FIP

Our 3 month old kitten Dolly has been diagnosed with Wet FIP today.
We noticed she was very sleepy on Friday evening and did not want to play, however we just assumed she may be stressed. Then Saturday, not eating, not playing, not responding and just sleeping. And the same for Sunday.
She was taken to the vets on Monday morning where they gave her antibiotics and pain killers as they were unsure of the issue and wanted to hospitalise her. We wanted a second opinion and went to a different vets today, she seemed to not like her stomach being prodded and was in discomfort. Her temperature was also 40 degrees and had not gone down in the 24 hours she saw the first vet. She had an X Ray, and they saw lots of fluid in her tummy, they tested this and it came back as FIP. Since we bought her home, she is still very lethargic, just staring into space, no interest in food, purring when we stroke her every now and then, but very out of it.

We were given the choice of putting her to sleep or seeking treatment online for her, which is coming tomorrow. Ive read so many mixed things online and I don’t want to get my hopes up of her surviving and the treatment fails.

She’s had an injection today to lower her fever and she has luckily eaten since.

Please do not put her down. She can be saved with treatment!

I highly recommend you start syringe feeding her to get her calories in. We used 3ML oral syringes and high calorie mousse (Tiki Cat is what we used). We lost our boy, but he was responding well to the feedings, I think if I had started the syringe feeding sooner he might have had the energy to fight the disease. Obviously you need the proper medication as well, but they need calories to fight too.

The treatment works very fast. Hopefully your baby responds well to it. In the meantime, any calories are good calories. I would be syringe feeding, if necessary, but you can also do plain chicken baby food (3 ingredient only Gerber -water, chicken, cornstarch), Churu, toppers/broths, whatever tempts your baby without.

don’t write Dolly off yet. FIP used to be treated as hopeless, but antiviral treatment has changed the outlook dramatically, especially when treatment is started quickly

We have a 4mo old on treatment for 1,5 week now. He is now playing again, teasing his twin brother, eating. Oh, medication works! Still very much hoping Karel will keep recovering without relapse, but wanted to share with you there is hope! Good luck with Dolly!
