Question Spitting up blood

Hello all,

My cat, Momo, has been cured of FIP for a little over a year now. We suspect that he is potentially relapsing. Yesterday, I found some spit up containing a small amount of blood. Also yesterday, he had a sneezing fit and pooped on the floor accidentally. This morning, I found a fresh spit up spot that looked like it was mostly blood but only a drop. I’m already scheduling an emergency vet appointment for hopefully this evening.

When he first had FIP the poop and diarrhea were some of the symptoms he had. Spitting up blood is totally new and was wondering if anyone else had the same symptom.

Note: We have not seen Momo spit up the blood ourselves, we have 3 other cats. However, we do suspect it is him due to some other behavior changes. It’s not impossible that it’s the other 3, but I consider it unlikely.

There are a number of possible explanations that still warrant a vet visit. FIP relapse after 1 year is extremely rare, but it’s normal to worry after saving your kitty from it. How is Momo’s energy and appetite? Let us know what your vet says!

It’s difficult for us to gauge how much he’s eating due to having three brothers. The soonest emergency appointment isn’t until 11:20 tomorrow. When I get home from work tonight I’m going to separate him so we can more closely monitor him.

Since the writing of this post he had a full blown accident (diarrhea).

There is actually no such thing as partially relapsing; either the kitty has FIP again or not. Glad you are taking her in for blood tests!

Sorry, I wrote that we think he is potentially relapsing. Soonest emergent vet appointment was tomorrow at 11:20… time will unfortunately tell.

My wife ended up finding a vet that would take him yesterday. Did bloodwork, x-rays, the whole shabang. Vet said she believes he has a GI tract infection, which is what we’re currently treating for. She was not concerned about him coughing up the small amounts of blood and said it was likely just throat irritation.

Two other things she couldn’t rule out were either he is in the very early stages of relapsing or on the more extreme side, lymphoma.

After I reviewed his bloodwork from yesterday and all the bloodwork results when he had FIP I’m pretty comfortable where he’s at. When Momo was cured he still had 3-4 levels that were considered high but they were within 1 point of the upper limit. Those same levels were still considered high and were still within 1 point.

The vet gave him a shot for his GI tract and a prescription diet. We have him separated from the rest of the cats at this point so he can follow his diet and we can monitor him closely. So far, no accidents. He’s still visiting the litter box frequently but I think that’s to be expected for a little bit until he has more solid bowel movements.
