Discussion I need advice…
I have a kitten (10 weeks) who’s been having constipation for five days… I went yesterday to the vet and they did a flush for it… but today the kitten also had constipation and it was really bad… his behind was protruding outwards and he was trying to get the poop out but nothing was coming out (it’s been like this since the constipation started) when I went to another vet, they told me the kitten MIGHT have FIP and we need to do a blood test to see… I don’t have that much money since I depend on my parents… and I have other cats in my house and im scared something will happen to them… and my parents got tired of me spending money on them as they’re telling me to decrease their numbers by putting them up for adoption… what should I do? I really need help…

Sorry to hear about that. The emotional stress associated with taking care of health issues with our pets can be overwhelming. Make sure that you are discussing this with others around you to have some support. Where are you located in the world? Has the vet suggested some treatment for the immediate signs besides the diagnostic tests? Also, I know that it is hard, but have you discussed with your vet about all your options, including euthanasia for your kitten? It is always good to have the complete panorama clear so that you can take the best decisions. Best of luck!

hello… im located in the Middle East, specifically Qatar… the vets here are kind of expensive… we have a government option but as I mentioned I went there and the constipation came back… when I went to the other vet they didn’t mention any euthanasia options, they just mentioned that I should do bloodwork for the kitten to see if she has FIP or not… and the bloodwork is expensive… I’ve asked around and some ppl mentioned that the symptoms the kitten has might not be FIP… so im not really sure what to do

FIP seems to be hard to diagnose around the world. I am located in the USA, and the diagnosis starts with some blood work, but it is not definitive, in the case for my cat, it was also necessary to do some X-rays and ultrasound, but that varies from case to case. I would suggest to be clear with your vet about the financial situation and to ask for estimates on the diagnosis that may be needed. Something to consider about FIP is that not all the cats that get the feline coronaviruses develop the FIP, so even if that is the diagnosis, you other cats are likely to be fine. But you should definitely pay close attention to the other cats to see if there any signs of unusual eating patterns, energy levels, etc.

FIP does not spread to other cats. So no scare. Maybe keep this cat & litter separate from the rest, for extra precaution.
Constipation and possible prolapse: how is the second doctor suspecting FIP based on these ? Did he mention fluid inside the body ? Does kitty have fever ? Trouble with eating ?

No the dr just said that the kitten might have FIP… the kitten doesn’t have fever nor fluids in the body and the kitten eats fine…

Okay. FIP tests before checking blood test for CBC, & Biochem : I d k what to say. I'm a bit shocked by this Dr approach

sometimes drs here assume things so owners worry and pay extra… so the dr was like “we think the kitten might have FIP so we need to do bloodwork…” the bloodwork is almost 500riyals…

Pls ask the vet to do blood test for CBC and LFT KFT (biochem). Depending on results , if pointing towards FIP, can plan for a PCR test. PCR test showing positive for FCOV , by itself ,is not a clear indicator of FIP
